Serial killer Fred West describes chopping up his daughter's body in new tape
The weather may be hotting up outside, but there's every reason to stay in for a night on the sofa with thrilling new dramas, hard-hitting documentaries and shiny talent shows on our screens. With so much to choose from, I have handpicked the best of the box from big broadcasters like BBC and ITV, as well as streaming services - from Netflix to Prime Video.
Tonight, more horrific detail about the crimes committed by Fred and Rose West is revealed in a new Netflix show, Location, Location, Location celebrates 25 years and we're blessed with yet another home renovation show.
See below for my top telly picks.
Smirking and laughing, sadistic serial killer Fred West is being interviewed about his missing teenage daughter as police dig up his patio. As we see footage of the paving slabs being levered up from the garden of 25 Cromwell Street in February 1994, we can hear the creepy tape as West talks to detectives.
This documentary is gripping from the off as three episodes rake over the lives and crimes of Britain's most notorious and prolific husband and wife serial killers. Recently-discovered police recordings fill in a few gaps as the series shows how Gloucestershire police was able to unearth the remains of the West couple's 12 victims to build a case against them. Relatives of some of the victims speak about their pain and torment, while we also hear from people who were involved with the case and remain haunted.
It begins with insight into how it began - when the West children said that if they misbehaved they would end up under the patio like their sister Heather, who had been missing for years. In a chilling interview, Fred West admits killing her and describes using a bread knife to cut up her body. Howard Ogden, Fred West's solicitor, says: 'A man is describing murdering and dismembering his daughter. It wasn't with floods of tears of distress and stress and anxiety, it was a set of facts. He adds: 'We found Heather. It was meant to be the end of the story, but it turned out, tragically, that it was only the beginning.'
For a quarter of a century, real estate couple Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer have been peddling their mantra - location, location, location. They have helped almost 750 people, viewed over 1,800 homes and been entrusted with over £175 million of the great British public's money. Now it's their silver anniversary, so Kirstie and Phil have regrouped to reflect on the joy and frustration they have encountered over the years.
They've been there through the boom and the bust, they've dealt with runaway markets, and were around when Lockdown meant there was no market whatsoever. This nostalgic doc whizzes through the key moments in the show's history, with updates on some of their house hunters and also reflecting on their own relationship. Kirstie says: 'When Phil and I started, we knew a bit about property and nothing about TV. We've learned a great deal more about property and a bit about TV.'
Fortunate isn't it that we are a nation obsessed with house renovations, since the TV schedules are rammed with endless restoration shows. In this latest offering, architect Hugh Wallace follows adventurous homeowners as they battle to restore derelict or unloved historical properties to their former glory. Expect collapsing walls, unexpected plumbing problems and people running around frantically in hard hats as they try to achieve their dreams brick by tortuous brick, all while spewing money literally up the walls.
This series is set in Ireland as people try to create their visions in the ruined walls of Ireland's past. 'What possessed you to buy this?' asks Hugh as he meets Mary-Claire and Sully as they transform a four-bedroom Georgian house into a modern home, while also trying to pay homage to the building's rich past. Hugh then observes over 16 months as the couple battle to turn a demolition site into a serene home.
Mackenzie is jealous of John and Aaron's relationship. He begins to plot, while Matty watches on amused. Moira is haunted by memories of the past. She finally shows Ross the mysterious letter - the news that he has a half-brother he's never met throws him off balance. At first Ross buries his head in the sand, but Matty suggests that meeting him could change his life for the better. Bear is panicked to see Mandy and Paddy have boxed up his possessions.
Ian and Kathy excitedly prepare for the baby's welcome home party, but disaster strikes when Cindy arrives. Peter shuns Cindy, and feeling cast out once again, Cindy decides to play the video of Kathy and Harvey kissing at his and Jean's engagement announcement. Suki tries to talk to Avani about sleeping with Joel, but Avani is in no mood to talk and storms out. Later Suki finds a quiet moment to reveal everything to Priya, but Ravi comes home and overhears everything.
When Mick sends Liam for bacon sarnies, he fails to come back. Gary and Maria find him skulking in the café, where Liam opens up about how Mick locked him in the tool shed. Maria is horrified. In the bistro, Abi and Debbie order soft drinks with lunch, but when Ronnie enters, Debbie changes it to a large vodka. Betsy rounds on Lauren over her treatment of Bobby. A row ensues and Lauren accidentally squirts ketchup all over poor Roy.

UK military bases on 'highest level' red alert after US bombing of Iran
The British armed forces are on the highest level of alert for drone strikes after the US bombing of Iran, the Defence Secretary has confirmed British forces stationed throughout the Middle East have been placed on heightened alert for potential drone strikes after the US airstrikes on Iran, as per Defence Secretary John Healey. Healey has affirmed that protection of UK Armed Forces is now at "highest level" amid escalating concerns that the US action might ignite a broader conflict, as published in The Telegraph. Since the strikes took place early Sunday morning, security measures at British bases in the Middle East have been significantly intensified, with staff preparing for the possibility of not only drone attacks but conventional rocket and missile assaults too. The increased state of alert also comes at a time of growing worry over threats to UK bases both domestically and abroad. On Saturday, a British national was apprehended in Cyprus under suspicion of conducting espionage on an RAF base for Iran, closely following an incident where two pro-Palestinian activists infiltrated RAF Brize Norton and caused damage to two planes, reports the Express. In his column for the newspaper on Sunday, Mr Healey penned: "The safety of UK personnel and bases is my top priority. Force protection is at its highest level, and we deployed additional jets this week." Senior defence officials are particularly cautious of the use of drones following an event where Ukrainian drones wreaked havoc on 40 Russian aircrafts –including those capable of carrying nuclear warheads– across Russia. With the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Russia's employment of Iranian-made Shahed drones has led to widespread power outages and significant destruction of infrastructure. The Shahed-136's explosive payload, originally designed to demolish buildings, can now also deliver lethal fragmentation or thermobaric blasts. Iran has recently deployed these drones against targets in Israel. Earlier this month, Sir Keir Starmer confirmed that additional RAF jets would be dispatched to the region to enhance security. British bases in the Middle East include RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, where 14 RAF jets are currently stationed, as well as naval hubs in Bahrain and Oman and shared airbases in Qatar and the UAE. Potential extra security measures could involve increasing armed guards, issuing live ammunition and deploying more radar systems. The US acted independently in its strikes on Iran, and so far Iran's threats of retaliation have been solely directed at America. It is understood that British bases are not yet preparing for any immediate, targeted attack, but the heightened alert reflects the broad range of threats - from rockets to improvised explosive devices - that UK forces could potentially face.

Shaughna Phillips shows off her bump on Love Island AfterSun as Maya Jama congratulates the former contestant on her pregnancy
Shaughna Phillips showcased her bump on Love Island AfterSun on Sunday, hours after announcing she is pregnant. The former islander, 31, who is also a mother to Lucia, two, looked radiant as she appeared as a special guest on the ITV 2 spin off show. To discuss her her happy news, the blonde beauty wore an elegant white wrap dress. Appearing alongside Demi Jones, Shaughna was congratulated by host Maya Jama after she revealed she is expecting her second child. Walking over to the two guests, Maya said: 'Hello, congratulations are in order, Shaughna!' The host continued: 'I mean amazing. Baby number two?' which the blonde beauty replied. 'two, here you go and busy!'. Taking to Instagram earlier on Sunday, Shaughna revealed she was expecting as she posted a video of herself taking a pregnancy test and showed off her growing bump. She also shared a sweet video of her daughter Lucia wearing a t-shirt saying 'Big Sis' and 'In my big sister era' to go with the announcement. Shaughna did not reveal who the father of her baby is as she wrote: 'Adding a little more love to our family…' Following the birth of her daughter Lucia in April 2023, Shaughna's boyfriend of four years, Billy Webb, 29, was sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to supply 4.5kg of cocaine worth at least £360,000. However Shaughna revealed in November that the father of her little girl had been released after serving only 12 months of his sentence and the family reunited to enjoy a Christmas grotto together. The blonde bombshell has been very open with her fans throughout the ordeal and previously revealed on her podcast Oh, Baby with Shaughna and Holly that she had struggled to come to terms with the situation. She said: 'It's the most gut-wrenching position to be in. Taking to Instagram on Sunday , Shaughna revealed she was expecting as she posted a video of herself taking a pregnancy test and showed off her growing bump 'And, I mean, before I even answer this question, I want to just put it out there that you can judge me all you want, but please don't let me know, because I feel like unless you've been in this position you can't really have an opinion on it. 'Because before I was in this position, before I had a baby, if you had asked me would I ever, ever take my child into a prison, the answer would be absolutely not. Anyone that does that is crazy. 'And then, lo and behold, I'm now in this position. And I think the thing is, we're always going to be co-parents. 'And I know that me and my dad had the best relationship ever, and to me, my dad is the best person in the world. 'And I don't want Lucia to think differently of her father. I would never, ever stop him from seeing her, ever.' Sharing an adorable video to her Instagram announcing he had been released, the reality star revealed that she and her partner had taken Lucia to see Santa and added she never thought this day would come. She captioned the clip: 'If you had told me this time last year, that me and Billy would be taking Lucia to see Santa next Christmas, I probably wouldn't have let myself believe you 'The best couple of days, this Christmas is going to be so special'. The star also revealed to MailOnline that she had struggled raising her daughter as a single mother. She said: 'Having a newborn baby, hormones are all over the place and I was just struggling' 'Anyone who's had kids they'll probably say that when they're a newborn it's easiest because they just lie there and need to be fed but as they get older and they can talk back and say no... It's exhausting.'

Brit caught in Iran's revenge strike in Israel says she was buoyed by her ‘blitz spirit'

Nicola - who grew up in Mill Hill, North London but now lives in the Ramat Aviv suburb 10 miles north of the city centre - said: 'I've heard blast before in recent days but nothing like this. 'There was an enormous boom followed by a rush of air and we knew this was big and very close. 'But I'm British and my grandfather was a volunteer ambulance driver in the London blitz - so I strangely didn't feel as afraid as everyone else. 'It was against all advice but I, kind of, crawled out of my hole and found myself heading straight for the site of the explosion. 'It's strange but it really did feel like the blitz - what my grandfather had braved in London, I was now experiencing in Tel Aviv.' A five storey block 600 metres from Nicola's home was devastated at 8am yesterday by an enormous Iranian missile strike. Bedding, clothes and belongings hung from the blown out shell of a block with other buildings blackened, cars wrecked and glass and debris strewn across the neighbourhood. The Sun's team took cover in a hotel shelter at 7.30am yesterday when sirens and alerts signalled the first revenge attack after Operation Midnight Hammer. Walls of our shelter in the city centre hotel shook violently as a series of explosions ripped through the air above. Wounded Iran immediately lashes out at Israel launching volleys of ballistic missiles causing 'large-scale destruction' Ramat Aviv took the biggest hit of the attack in the bustling coastal city as families across the country cowered bomb shelters. Gran-of-three Shevi Lahav - an 84-year-old holocaust survivor - told The Sun: 'I live on the fourth floor of a nine story block but don't know if I have a home to go back to now. 'I fled from the Nazis in Russian for two years in World War II and it's hard to believe I'm being attacked again. 'I was in the shelter but god knows what would have happened to me if I hadn't reached the shelter. 'But we won't give in - we didn't give in then and we won't give in now.' 5 Tel Aviv residents shelter in a hotel bunker as Iranian missiles hit the Israeli city Credit: Doug Seeburg
