14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi slams remarkable century in IPL
14-year-old batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi slammed the second-fastest century in Indian Premier League (IPL) history in a remarkable innings for the Rajasthan Royals.
The teenage phenom had made eye-catching cameos in his first couple of IPL games after becoming the youngest cricket to be bought at the IPL auction in December.
But Suryavanshi entered another stratosphere with an extraordinary knock of 101 off 38 balls against the Gujarat Titans in Jaipur, bringing up his ton in just 35 balls.
Only West Indies great Chris Gayle (30 balls) has ever made a faster 100 in the competition, with Suryavanshi producing the quickest innings by any Indian to reach the landmark - surpassing the 37 balls taken by Yusuf Pathan in a 2010 innings played before the youngster was even born.
Prodigious cricketing talent is not necessarily new, with Pakistan's Shahid Afridi and New Zealand's Amelia Kerr among those to record standout international feats before their 18th birthdays.
Hasan Raza remains the youngest Test cricketer, making his debut aged 14 years and 227 days for Pakistan against Zimbabwe in 1996.
Suryavanshi, who plays for Bihar domestically, had already cracked a 58-ball century in a four-day game against Australia Under-19 and also has an unbeaten 332 made in the Randhir Verma Tournament in his home state.
His innings helped set up a comfortable win for the Royals, chasing down an imposing total of 209 with several overs to spare with incumbent India Test opener Yashasvi Jaiswal making a comparatively sedate 70 from 40 balls.

Jofra Archer will make his long-awaited red-ball return on Sunday – not that his county wanted anyone to know. Sussex on Saturday named a 12-man squad for their County Championship match in Durham, with Archer mysteriously missing from the list. Given England selector Luke Wright had said earlier this month that the pace bowler was set to make his comeback from injury at Chester-le-Street, there were fears he had broken down again. However, England chiefs quickly clarified that the squad Sussex published on their website was wrong – and that Archer will indeed don whites for the first time in four years today. Mail Sport understands Sussex had bizarrely left the 2019 World Cup winner off their list because they were trying to avoid extra media attention on his return. The 30-year-old has not played any first-class cricket since Sussex's County Championship clash with Kent in May 2021, a match he did not finish after injuring his right elbow. Archer's last Test came in India earlier that year, while he has not featured in a home England Test since 2020. The Barbados-born star most recently played competitive cricket for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL in May, but his tournament was cut short after he suffered a thumb injury. If Archer comes through this County Championship match unscathed, he could be available for England's second Test against India at Edgbaston, starting on July 2. England are desperate to have Archer back fit ahead of this winter's Ashes, especially with the limitations of their current pace attack being exposed in India's first innings of the series at Headingley.
