Marking World Environment Day 2025 on 5 June 2025, with this year's theme of 'Ending Plastic Pollution', South Africa's major retailer, Pick n Pay celebrated a major environmental milestone: its Reverse Vending Machines (RVM) customer recycling initiative, which has now diverted over 1.1 million plastic and packaging recyclable items from landfill.
Since launching the pilot in 2018, the RVM initiative grew into a national network of 39 machines across Pick n Pay stores in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape, and the Eastern Cape.
Each machine accepts recyclable items, such as plastic bottles, aluminium cans, and glass containers, and rewards customers with Smart Shopper loyalty points, which can be used for everyday purchases.
'What started as a small test has evolved into a movement. This programme has shown that people are willing to recycle when it's made convenient, accessible, and rewarding,' Riley van Rooyen, Sustainability Lead at Pick n Pay, said.
As of May 2025, the initiative collected and diverted over 1.1 million recyclable items from landfill, resulting in over 80 000 kgs of waste recycled and an estimated 1 200 tonnes of CO₂e emissions avoided.
Customers received a total of over R135 000 in recycling rewards since the pilot launched, and over R56 000 in Smart Shopper points since the integration with the programme in August last year.
Each machine can hold up to 750 items and uses barcode recognition technology to ensure the correct sorting of recyclables.
'Ending plastic pollution isn't a one-day project. But this initiative proves that scalable, community-led environmental solutions work. And on this World Environment Day, we're proud to celebrate our plastic reduction initiatives wins with our customers and our partners in the project, who've helped us take over a million small steps toward a cleaner, more sustainable future,' van Rooyen added.
The retailer has exceeded its Plastic Pact 2025 target for packaging weight, reporting a 38% reduction in average packaging weight.
This also builds on the retailer's broader efforts to reduce waste in the environment.
Last year, it diverted nearly 13,000 tonnes of waste from its stores, equivalent to the weight of approximately 2 100 average adult male elephants
Through its regular beach clean-ups, it has removed nearly 2,000kg of plastic waste from local beaches over the past five years.

Help feed the nation with Soup for South Africa initiative
The Feed the Nation Foundation partnered with Pick n Pay to introduce its Soup for SA initiative, where customers can purchase a packet of Pick n Pay soup for R5 and help feed vulnerable communities this season. Also read: Schools' choir competition held in Amanzimtoti Feed the Nation has thus far distributed over 45 million meals to the needy, and now its lofty goal of 60 million is ever closer thanks to its latest partnership. The initiative has been launched across all Pick n Pay Hypermarket stores nationwide and will run until June 29. Seventy-five percent of the donated soup will be distributed to 2,675 primary schools through the Pick n Pay School Club, while the remaining 25% will be allocated to local civil society organisations selected by each hypermarket. Customers can purchase any quantity of soup packets, swipe their Smart Shopper card, and donate the packets at the designated vehicle trailer near the store entrance. Each soup packet donated equals one entry into a draw where one lucky Smart Shopper will win the trailer. 'As winter sets in, the need for food support grows significantly, especially in vulnerable communities. At Feed the Nation Foundation, we're proud to stand alongside our customers and partners to help meet this increased demand. Together, we're not only providing nourishment but also hope and dignity to those who need it most,' said Deirdre Mullins, national corporate social investment manager at Pick n Pay. MK Party to reject Fiscal Framework and Revenue Proposals when put to vote
CAPE TOWN - The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party said it will reject the Fiscal Framework and Revenue Proposals when it is put to the vote in the National Assembly on Wednesday afternoon. This will be the second time a fiscal framework to underpin the 2025 budget is put to the vote, after Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana tabled a new budget in the house three weeks ago. ALSO READ: - EFF says it will oppose Wednesday's adoption of fiscal framework and budget - Parliament to consider the fiscal framework and revenue proposals for the 2025 budget MK Party's finance spokesperson and Member of Parliament (MP), Des van Rooyen, said public input into the budget process is being ignored, and the fuel levy that came into effect last week will harm the poor. The MK Party has condemned the repeated attempts by the Finance Minister to table a budget, saying it's a betrayal of public trust and it contributes to socioeconomic instability. On Tuesday, a motion from the party to censure Godongwana for gross mismanagement failed, but Van Rooyen said it's not the end of the road. 'There are various processes that we will take advantage of to hold the minister accountable. Our comrades both in the Standing Committee on Appropriations and the Standing Committee on Finance will be using those platforms to hold the minister and the National Treasury accountable.' Van Rooyen said replacing a value-added tax (VAT) increase with a fuel levy increase shows a lack of empathy for the poor. 'This among other things exposes the GNU's [Government of National Unity] inability to respond to South Africa's humanitarian crisis of unemployment, poverty and inequality.' Van Rooyen said Godongwana's growth projections are also overly optimistic.
