Liberia: The Ministry of Health (MOH), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Launch Community Health Structure Orientation in Three Counties
The Ministry of Health (MOH), through its Community Health Program and in collaboration with UNICEF, has launched a comprehensive orientation for the reactivation and activation of Community Health Structures in Bomi, Gbarpolu, and Grand Cape Mount Counties. The program spans 431 communities and is focused on strengthening Community Health Committees (CHCs) and Health Facility Development Committees (HFDCs). The goal is to improve community-based healthcare delivery and ensure access to essential health services in the most remote parts of these counties.
At the official launch ceremony, Gbarpolu County Health Officer (CHO), Dr. Kezelebah S. Goyah, expressed his appreciation and underscored the importance of the initiative. 'On behalf of the Gbarpolu County Health Team, I want to welcome you all and thank you for attending this activity,' Dr. Goyah stated. 'It is an honor to officially open this orientation on the reactivation and activation of our community health structures. The Community Health Program is vital to the health sector, as it enables us to reach people in the most remote areas of the county. Ensuring the program is functional and that everyone understands the structure is key. Once again, I declare this activity officially open.'
Representing UNICEF, Madame Jestina K. Dennis reiterated the agency's commitment to supporting Liberia's healthcare system through the Ministry of Health. 'On behalf of UNICEF, I want to thank the Gbarpolu County Health Team and the Ministry of Health,' she said. 'UNICEF's role is to support the government through the Ministry—not by giving money to individuals, but by backing structured efforts. Our mission centers around the well-being of children, who are at the heart of every community. I appreciate the collaboration with the County Health Team and commend the Community Health Program for launching this important session.'
Delivering remarks on behalf of the Ministry of Health, Madame Joyce Junius, Deputy Director – Community Health Program, emphasized the purpose and significance of the orientation.
'We are here to reactivate and activate community health structures in the various Community Health Assistant (CHA) communities,' Junius stated. 'Our team will work alongside you to ensure these structures are fully functional. As the CHO said, this program is unique and essential in reducing sickness in our communities. These structures, CHCs and HFDCs, are very effective when operational. They support local efforts and save lives. When CHAs are unavailable, these committees will step in to carry out critical roles.'
She added, 'Some of you may be hearing about CHCs and HFDCs for the first time. Each has specific roles at both the community and facility levels, which we'll cover in our presentations. We are not here because we know everything, we are here for interactive learning and to correct misunderstandings for these structures to truly work for the people.'
The orientation is expected to enhance grassroot health governance and improve the quality of health services by reactivating and activating community health structures throughout Bomi, Gbarpolu, and Grand Cape Mount Counties.

Gaza faces a man-made drought as water systems collapse, UNICEF says
Gaza is facing a man-made drought as its water systems collapse, the United Nations' children agency said on Friday. "Children will begin to die of thirst ... Just 40% of drinking water production facilities remain functional," UNICEF spokesperson James Elder told reporters in Geneva. "We are way below emergency standards in terms of drinking water for people in Gaza," he added. UNICEF also reported a 50% increase in children aged six months to 5 years admitted for treatment of malnutrition from April to May in Gaza, and half a million people going hungry. It said the U.S.-backed aid distribution system run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) was "making a desperate situation worse." On Friday at least 25 people awaiting aid trucks or seeking aid were killed by Israeli fire south of Netzarim in central Gaza Strip, according to local health authorities. On Thursday at least 51 people were killed by Israeli gunfire and military strikes, including 12 people who tried to approach a site operated by the GHF in the central Gaza Strip. Elder, who was recently in Gaza, said he had many testimonials of women and children injured while trying to receive food aid, including a young boy who was wounded by a tank shell and later died of his injuries. He said a lack of public clarity on when the sites, some of which are in combat zones, were open was causing mass casualty events. "There have been instances where information (was) shared that a site is open, but then it's communicated on social media that they're closed, but that information was shared when Gaza's internet was down and people had no access to it," he said. On Wednesday, the GHF said in a statement it had distributed three million meals across three of its aid sites without an incident. On Friday at least 12 people were killed in an airstrike on a house belonging to the Ayyash family in Deir Al-Balah, taking the day's death toll to 37.

Palestinian families struggle to secure single daily meal: Unicef
James Elder, spokesperson for the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef), described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as 'bleak, horrific and hopeless'. He said Palestinian families are struggling to secure even a single meal a day for their children, as Israeli attacks far outweigh the aid deliveries entering the strip. 'There was a momentary uptick in aid and slight improvements in water and food supplies… But that optimism has quickly dissolved in the face of a catastrophic blockade on humanitarian relief,' Elder told Anadolu Agency, during an official mission from the southern city of Khan Younis. 'Every known limit of human endurance has been shattered,' he said. 'Mothers go without food for days just to provide a single meal for their children.' Speaking about the absence of Eid celebrations in Gaza, he said: 'Instead of joy, families gather in silence to remember those they've lost, surrounded by an overwhelming sense of grief and abandonment,' he added. 'There are no homes, no shelters - just loss. People spent their lives building homes and gardens, and now everything has disappeared.' He also warned that malnourished children are dying from otherwise treatable illnesses. 'Severe malnutrition makes a child 10 times more likely to die from something minor. This is the deadly cycle: hunger, dirty water, and lack of basic healthcare,' he said.

Kenya Bolsters Immunisation Drive as Cabinet Secretary (CS) Hon. Aden Duale Flags Off 6.2 Million Vaccine Doses to Counties
Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale today flagged off 3 million doses of BCG (used to prevent tuberculosis) and 3.2 million doses of Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) at Afya House, Nairobi, marking a major boost to Kenya's national immunisation programme. During the flag-off, the CS called on all county governments—through the Council of Governors (CoG) and their County Executive Committee Members (CECMs) for Health—to prioritise the collection of the vaccines from regional depots and ensure timely distribution to health facilities, particularly in remote and underserved areas. Hon. Duale commended the government for moving with urgency to facilitate the delivery of the vaccines, describing it as a strong demonstration of Kenya's commitment to safeguarding the health of its children. He acknowledged immunisation partners, including UNICEF, for their rapid procurement and delivery of the vaccines, and reaffirmed the Ministry's commitment to working closely with all stakeholders to minimise disruptions and sustain the country's immunisation momentum. Parents and Caregivers across the country are encouraged to visit local health facilities to have their children vaccinated and catch up on any missed doses. The CS was joined by Principal Secretaries Dr. Ouma Oluga (Medical Services) and Ms. Mary Muthoni (Public Health and Professional Standards), Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, CoG CEO Ms. Mary Mwiti, and representatives from UNICEF and the World Health Organization.
