Five used convertible cars to buy in 2025 for under £25k with robust reliability

With temperatures tipped to soar beyond 30 degrees across Britain this week, a cheap second-hand convertible will be a tempting proposition.
But before you start perusing the car ads for a cabriolet on a budget to enjoy the summer rays and wind-in-the-hair driving, it's important to know which are the most reliable to run to protect you from excessive repair bills.
Extended warranty data supplied by Warranty Solutions Group (WSG) covering a sample of 3,000 convertible cars reveals how many customers have claimed on their policies in the last 12 months (July 2024-June 2025).
The top five with the lowest claim rate are listed, which is based only on popular models for which 100 owners have taken out extended warranty cover.
To help you make your decision, we'll tell you how much you will need to pay for a 10-year-old example with less than 60,000 miles on the clock.
And we also reveal which convertible model you might want to avoid, with more than a quarter of owners with warranties claiming on their policies due to high repair bills.
5. Audi TT
Despite huge success, particularly when the first-generation model arrived in the late nineties, the Audi TT is no more.
The German marque pulled the plug on production in November 2023, ending 25 years of its availability.
Those on the hunt for a decent 10-year-old model can pick up a third (and final) generation TT Roadster for around £14,000 with fewer than 60,000 miles on the clock.
This gets you top down driving from cabriolet with a 2.0-litre TFSI petrol engine sending power to the front wheels via a manual six-speed transmission. All-wheel-drive variants with the S-Tronic auto 'gox will cost slightly more and those wanting more frugality - but a worse sound - can get their hands on a 2.0-litre TDI diesel variant, too.
Just one in seven owners with an extended warranty in the last 12 months have claimed on their policies, with the average cost of repairs ringing in at £505.
4. Mini Convertible
The only four-seat convertible to make the list of five most reliable top-down cars is the Mini
Buyers searching for a second-hand compact convertible packed with retro styling and an affordable price tag should look no further than Mini's Convertible.
You can pick up a decent 10-year-old example for around £6,000 today with the brand's tried-and-tested 1.6-litre petrol engine under the bonnet.
It's also the only model in our top five that has seating for four - though adults in the back can expect a cramped experience to say the least.
On average, one in eight extended warranty policyholders claimed for vehicle repairs to their Mini Convertible in the last 12 months - and that's based on vehicle dating back to 2004.
With an average payout of £535, the Mini Convertible is one of the more expensive cabrios to fix when something goes go wrong.
3. Porsche Boxster
While for a long time it was considered the poor man's 911, the Boxster has cultivated a devoted following of fans, which is partly due to its reliability and relatively low running costs
The most expensive option in our list is the Porsche Boxster. With incredibly strong residual values, even a decade-old version will set used buyers back around £25,000 for a standard 2.7-litre versions of the mid-engined 981-generation roadster.
If you want to upgrade to a 3.2-litre 'S' or 'GTS', prices are even steeper.
While for a long time it was considered the poor man's 911, the Boxster has cultivated its own devoted following of fans, which is why depreciation is relatively slow and used prices remain stubbornly high.
Strong reliability - and relatively low running costs compared to other Porsche products - is another reason for its popularity.
Just over one in ten extended warranty policyholders made a claim in the last 12 months. And the claim amount on average was less than for the Mini Convertible.
2. BMW Z4
BMW's Z generation o two-seat roadsters, including the Z3, haven't always had the strongest dependability track records. But the German giant - and its engineers - have tackled this issue in recent years and the Z4 has become relatively robust.
If you're hunting for a 10-year-old example, the E89 edition (which went out of production in 2016) offers good value over its G29 replacement that remains in showrooms today.
You can get your hands on a sub-60,000-mile example with a 2.0-litre petrol engine and automatic gearbox for around £12,000 today. Sending power to the rear wheels, featuring two seats and a hard-top roof, it's every bit the performance sports car.
Just one in 11 owners with extended warranties have claimed on their Z4 repair costs in the last year.
While that's an impressively low volume, the average claim amount is higher than any other motor listed, at just over £750.
1. Mazda MX-5
Taking the top spot is the Mazda MX-5, long hailed as the gold standard for affordable sports cars.
Its near-legendary dependability stems from Mazda's dedication to engineering simplicity and mechanical purity that has benefitted its popular roadster for the last 35 years.
With its rear-wheel-drive layout, wonderfully engaging manual gearbox and lightweight nippiness, the MX-5 has always been a thoroughly brilliant sports car to drive that's refreshingly mechanically uncomplicated.
The current fourth-generation car launched in 2015, so a ten-year-old example is pretty much bang up to date. Buyers have the choice of two Skyactiv-G petrol engines (1.5 and 2.0 litres).
With a claim rate of just 7.7 per cent across all MX-5 models, dependability in roadster for doesn't get better than this. For the one in 13 owners who have claimed, the average payout was £456.
'The Mazda MX-5 remains a standout example – and its long-standing reputation for durability continues to be validated by surveys from What Car?, J.D. Power, and Consumer Reports in America,' explains Martin Binnee, operations director at WSG.
'It consistently outperforms expectations, reinforcing the value of engineering simplicity and mechanical integrity in an era of increasing complexity.'
Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet
With almost three in ten owners of Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolets turning to their extended warranties to cover the cost of repairs, WSG ranks it the least reliable of all popular convertible models
The Mercedes E-Class is the convertible car with the highest volume of claims made by owners.
Almost three in ten drivers of the luxury four-seat cabriolet claimed on their polices in the last 12 months, which is why WSG ranked it lowest for reliability among the popular convertibles.
'While it's an undeniably luxurious cruiser, its high maintenance costs and relatively frequent faults make it a less attractive proposition for used buyers prioritising longevity and hassle-free ownership,' the provider said.

Nothing upsets Laurie. With 'pavement zombies' marching towards him obliviously while tapping at their phones, with ambulance and police sirens screaming in his ears, and a speeding-but-silent e-scooter flashing across his path at 25mph, he pads safely and calmly through the chaos. Still, at least there are no robots to worry about today. Laurie is a 20-month-old labrador-golden retriever cross with a look in his eyes that could melt your heart. He's also a professional, with a job to do. He is nearing the end of his six-month training to be a guide dog, an intense process and one which has had to change a lot in the past decade, as Britain's roads and pavements have been transformed by new technology and evolving attitudes. 'We've had to adapt fast,' said Karen Brady, 35, a training and behaviour manager at the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, known as Guide Dogs, which launched in the 1930s. Their animals are now taught to cope with a host of new hazards — and delivery robots are one of the most recent. 'We've had a lot of fun with those in Cambridge,' she said. Introduced in the area in 2022, the automated vehicles trundle along the pavement and simply stop when they detect a pedestrian. Guide dogs were initially baffled, and stopped too. 'We had to teach them to treat the robot like a car that's parked on a pavement, and find a way around it,' she said. 'The makers gave us a shell to practise with.' Other innovations are much more widespread — and potentially dangerous. 'Electric vehicles are a big thing, because the dog owner can't hear them,' said Brady. 'E-scooters fly up past the dogs really quickly, really quietly. We've hired them sometimes and rode them around to get the dogs used to them.' • How Terry the guide dog puppy was bred for perfection Owners and their dogs work as a partnership, and with the human unable to perceive an almost-silent car, bicycle or scooter, the dog must be extra vigilant. The human is in charge, but the watchful dogs are trained not to move across a road if they see a danger. There are plenty more new hazards. 'Cars have got bigger, and often park on pavements — we've taught the dogs to do a lot more work, often having to go on roads so the owner can get through the space. You get e-bikes and scooters littered all over the pavement now too, which is another big thing to find a way around. Then there are mobility scooters: we get them used to those as puppies. 'And of course there are people staring at their mobile phones, not looking where they're going. We do indoor exercises in our training centre to get the dog used to them. Outside, Oxford Street is a good place to practise.' Modern life impinges in ways that the sighted might not consider. Glass lifts, increasingly common in shopping centres, can confuse dogs trained to avoid height hazards. 'Just seeing that the floor beneath them is moving up and down can be worrying for the dog,' said Brady. Shared spaces, where cycle and scooter paths are integrated with pedestrian pavements, present issues too. 'We have to familiarise the dogs with new schemes — cycle lanes, floating bus stops and so on,' said Laurie's sighted handler today, specialist trainer Wayne Townley. 'You have this real grey line of where traffic sits.' Some distractions are more traditional. This year, Guide Dogs ran a training session at Ascot to ensure the animals would not be unnerved by enormous, garish hats and fascinators. The charity said many are scared and confused by oversized headgear, which can make a familiar person look strange. London dogs have always had to get used to the Tube. Shallower lines such as the Hammersmith & City are easiest to cope with: only those with the strongest nerve can endure the high-decibel screeching of the deep Northern and Victoria lines. Laurie has taken it all on board, and is a model of calm purpose as he guides Townley, 58, through the pandemonium of London's West End. He effortlessly tacks around an approaching phone zombie, is unfazed by deafening sirens and traffic, and ignores a tempting discarded kebab. 'They're a lot more common than they used to be — it's littered with them round here on Saturday morning — but the dog must know it can only eat food when it's given to them,' said Brady. 'We call it food manners.' She said most of the public are kind and considerate around guide dogs, but often do not notice that one is near them. 'People are involved in their own worlds, expected to do emails on the way to work. The modern world is such that people are looking down a lot of the time.' There are about 3,000 working guide dogs, mainly labradors, golden retrievers or crosses of the two, which are purpose-bred. It costs £38,000 to train each dog, all of which comes from donations. Their training begins when they are 14 months old. Most will then stay with one owner until about ten years old, when they retire to a volunteer's home to become a family pet. Laurie will soon be matched with a visually impaired person on the Guide Dogs shortlist, which could be anywhere in the country: there is then another five weeks of training specialised to their needs. 'Sight loss has no regard for background,' said Townley, who has been training dogs for 36 years. 'We've had to familiarise them with visits to a church, or mosque, even to Emirates stadium for Arsenal games. A businesswoman user had to fly a lot, so we did trips through the airport and a couple of flights. Every owner, and every dog, is different. Boris Johnson's failed £1bn EV charger fund killed off by Labour

Boris Johnson's near-£1 billion fund to roll out charge points on motorways has been killed off after failing to attract applications from service station operators. The £950 million Rapid Charging Fund was unveiled by the former prime minister in 2021 to support the plan to install more than 6,000 super-fast charge points across England's motorways by 2035. The scheme was designed to provide a springboard for the UK to 'lead the western world in the provision of rapid and ultra-rapid public chargers'. Government sources confirmed this weekend that the fund had finally been scrapped in favour of a £400 million initiative designed to avoid the pitfalls of Johnson's scheme, which was shunned by motorway services operators. It comes as: ⬤ the government confirmed that company car tax breaks for electric vehicles (EVs) will be extended until 2030;⬤ polling by Ipsos Mori showed that worries about a lack of charging infrastructure are the main barrier to drivers switching from petrol or diesel cars to an EV; and ⬤ experts say UK EV public charging costs are the highest in Europe, with drivers paying up to £670 a year more compared with petrol or diesel. Johnson's Rapid Charging Fund formed part of his ten-point plan for a green revolution. Funding was designed to provide 'support on rapid charge points on motorways and major roads to dash any anxiety around long journeys'. The initiative is understood to have failed to garner interest from motorway service operators such as Moto, Welcome Break and Roadchef as pilot schemes proved commercially unattractive. Among the complaints about the scheme were being bogged down in bureaucracy and being asked to commit to long-term power agreements that could lock in high costs years down the line. This weekend's confirmation of the decision to scrap Johnson's fund follows reports this year that ministers were looking into a revamp. The £400 million scheme for the deployment of charging infrastructure, announced during the Comprehensive Spending Review this month, is part of a broader package to support the uptake of zero-emission vehicles. Ministers this weekend confirmed that company car tax breaks for EVs would remain in force until the end of the decade, although discounted tax rates would rise to 9 per cent by 2030 from 3 per cent currently. The Department for Transport said: 'We're investing over £4 billion to support both industry and consumers in making the switch to electric vehicles, including by continuing to offer lower tax rates for EVs than those for traditional combustion engines.' A perceived lack of charging points remains a major barrier to switch to an EV, however. New polling by Ipsos Mori found that while 53 per cent of car owners said that they plan to replace their car by 2028, only a quarter expect that this replacement will be an EV. Concern about range is 'significant', the polling found. 'But underneath this concern our data suggests a level of nervousness and sense of a lack of information about EV charging, especially in public locations. It may be more accurate to talk about 'charge anxiety' rather than 'range anxiety',' Ipsos Mori said, in a report prepared for the Motability Scheme. For those with disabilities, the concern is more stark, with 69 per cent of respondents from within the Motability Scheme saying that they were worried about the distance an EV could travel on a single charge. Sales of battery electric vehicles grew 25.8 per cent in May and represent more than one in five (21.8 per cent of all new car sales), according to industry figures. Separate analysis concludes that the UK has become a global leader outside China in the uptake of EVs. But it warns that the cost of running zero-emission vehicles could outstrip that of a petrol or diesel powered alternative. UK EV public charging costs are the highest in Europe, according to a report by BNEF, a researcher owned by Bloomberg. This means that drivers will pay between £300 to £670 more a year depending on charger speed compared with petrol, the report's authors found. Drivers with off-street parking or those able to charge at home fare better, however. Despite UK residential electricity being among the most expensive in Europe, EV drivers would save an average of about £290 a year if vehicles were charged at home, the report found. Analysis by the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit in 2023, cited by the government this year, found that new petrol cars could cost approximately £700 a year more to run than electric models.

He says he chooses to remember Schumacher as he was, rather than dwell on the heartbreaking reality of his condition more than 10 years after his devastating ski crash. Schumacher has not been seen publicly since suffering catastrophic brain injuries during a skiing accident in the French Alps in December 2013. The seven-time world champion, now 56, has been under 24-hour care at his family home in Switzerland ever since. In a rare comment, Briatore — who oversaw Schumacher's rise at Benetton and remains close to his wife, Corinna — reflected on how he chooses to remember the F1 great, rather than focus on his current condition. 'If I close my eyes, I see him smiling after a win,' he told Corriere della Sera. 'I prefer to remember him like that rather than him just lying on a bed. Corinna and I talk often, though.' The stark image of Schumacher 'just lying on a bed' has reinforced the sense of tragedy surrounding his long struggle, with fans and even some friends largely kept in the dark due to the family's unwavering commitment to privacy. Briatore's comments echo those of his ex-wife, Elisabetta Gregoraci, who claimed in an earlier interview that Schumacher is unable to speak and is visited by only a handful of people. 'Michael doesn't speak, he communicates with his eyes,' she said. 'Only three people can visit him and I know who they are.' That aligns with reports from German journalist Felix Gorner, who said earlier this year the F1 icon is 'completely dependent' on caregivers and 'can no longer express himself verbally.'
