
Indonesia to Deploy Submarine Optical Cables for Tsunami Detection

Indonesia is set to enhance its national tsunami early warning system by integrating submarine optical cable technology, aiming to improve the accuracy and reach of detection in seismically active regions, according to a report by TV BRICS, citing "Antara News".
The initiative will be incorporated into the warning system currently managed by the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati emphasized the importance of advancing technological innovation to bolster the country's disaster preparedness infrastructure.
'This technological innovation research is needed to strengthen the existing tsunami early warning system,' Karnawati said.
While traditionally used for telecommunications and data transfer, submarine optical cables can also detect variations in underwater pressure and wave activity—key indicators of potential tsunami events.
Given Indonesia's expansive marine territory and the prevalence of undersea cables, this dual-use application offers a cost-effective and wide-reaching solution.
'If this optical cable can detect tsunamis, then sensors can be more evenly distributed throughout the region, including marine areas that currently do not have a detection system,' Karnawati noted.
Addressing the growing threat of natural disasters—particularly the devastating impact of earthquakes and tsunamis—has emerged as a key focus of international cooperation.
In May 2025, BRICS member countries convened a ministerial meeting in Brasília to coordinate responses to climate-related disasters. During the session, member states agreed on a joint declaration and a 2025–2028 action plan, outlining priorities such as strengthening early warning systems, investing in resilient infrastructure, and integrating local knowledge into disaster risk manag strategies.

Putin: BRICS Accounts for 40% of Global Economy
Nada Mustafa Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasised at the plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) that the global economy is undergoing its most significant transformation in decades. He pointed to the growing influence of the BRICS countries: from 20 per cent at the beginning of the century to 40 per cent of the global economy today, according to TV BRICS. According to Putin, Russia is proposing a new model of growth – one that is open, fair, free, focused on the needs of citizens and takes national interests into account. Putin recalled that at the BRICS summit in Kazan in 2024, 35 countries noted the need for a new model of the world. He emphasised that dozens of countries are already implementing large-scale projects in nuclear energy, AI, aviation, and IT, and that trade between countries has exceeded US$1 trillion. "Russia invites its partners to contribute to the formation of a new global growth model, to jointly ensure the prosperity of our countries and the stable development of the whole world for many, many years to come," the President said. He also outlined the key areas of structural change in the Russian economy: technological flexibility and high speed of implementation of solutions. South African Deputy President Paul Mashatile, in turn, emphasised that the topic of multipolarity is central in a changing world. He noted the active cooperation between Russia and South Africa in BRICS and the G20 and called Russia a key player in areas such as energy, food security, artificial intelligence and space. Mashatile focused on the growing role of Africa, especially in demographic and industrial terms. Africa is looking for partnerships based on equality, equal access to capital markets, knowledge and technology. It is in this regard that global platforms such as the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum become particularly important for us," he said. The Deputy President recalled that the continent's population will exceed 2.5 billion by 2050 and emphasised Africa's commitment to digital transformation, regional integration and the creation of a free trade area. Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang said that China will continue to promote a policy of openness and strengthen economic cooperation with developing countries. "The civilisations of the world must develop through mutual enrichment, based on equality, dialogue, and respect for diversity. Every nation has the right to choose its own path and realise its own values," he emphasised. Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, National Security Advisor thanked Russia for inviting him to the forum. He recalled the visit of the King of Bahrain to Moscow in May 2024 and stressed the importance of dialogue with President Vladimir Putin. The Sheikh highly praised Russia's economic policy, especially in the areas of industry and energy. "This policy plays an important role in the development of strategically important sectors of the economy. [...] It has a positive impact on the international investment climate. Russia is strengthening its economic relations with countries in our region and other states," he said. Russia, China to Launch Joint Production of Mass Spectrometers
Nada Mustafa By the end of the year Russia and China will start joint mass production of mass spectrometers on femtosecond lasers. This was announced by Aleksander Kuleshov, President of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, in an exclusive commentary at the TV BRICS studio in the Roscongress International Cooperation Area at St. Petersburg International Economic Forum ( SPIEF) 2025, according to TV BRICS. A mass spectrometer is a device for analysing the composition of substances at the molecular level, which makes it possible to determine precisely which elements or compounds are included in a sample. Femtosecond laser is a source of ultra-short laser pulses, which provides high accuracy in measurements. According to Aleksander Kuleshov, the Russian side is responsible for the spectrometer itself, while the Chinese side is responsible for the femtosecond laser. He emphasised that the project is being implemented not at the level of memorandums, but in the course of real technological cooperation with several Chinese universities. "This will be truly mass and, most importantly, inexpensive spectrometry," Kuleshov said. He noted that despite the popular belief that mass spectrometers are exclusively scientific equipment, in fact they are widely used, including for product quality control. Russia Develops Technology for Obtaining Fats from Microorganisms
Nada Mustafa Omsk State Technical University (OmSTU) is developing a technology for obtaining fats and oils by microbiological means. This will increase the nutritional value of products and make them more healthy and balanced. This was reported by the press service of OmSTU, a partner of TV BRICS. It is noted that obtaining fats by traditional methods depends on the climate and season and requires significant expenditures on agricultural equipment and personnel. The new method is based on the use of microorganisms – Rhodotorula glutinis, which is capable of accumulating beneficial fatty acids that are important for the cardiovascular, nervous, and immune systems, according to TV BRICS. During the development process, scientists create a nutrient medium for yeast, investigate ways to break down the cell wall for maximum fat extraction, and work on purifying and stabilising the product. According to Maria Kerber, a student at the Faculty of Art and Technology at OmSTU, microbiological fats are a promising area of biotechnology that can meet the growing demand for edible fats. She added that work is currently underway to reduce the cost and scale up the technology for industrial production. This will help reduce dependence on agriculture and improve the environmental situation. The resulting product can be used in the dairy, meat, and confectionery industries.
