KUCHING (April 25): The initiatives undertaken by the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) are closely aligned with the state's development goals, said its chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain.
Speaking at the inaugural SEDC Aidilfitri Open House held at a hotel here this afternoon, Abdul Aziz highlighted the corporation's long journey since its establishment on March 1, 1972.
'It spans from basic industries, housing, and real estate to strategic fields such as new energy, global investments, tourism, as well as the digital and green economy.
'All these initiatives are in line with our objective of supporting the state's development agenda under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030,' he said during the inaugural SEDC Aidilfitri Open House event held at a hotel here this afternoon.
The event was graced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Abdul Aziz also noted that SEDC's achievements are not measured solely by figures or assets, but by its social impact—particularly in providing job opportunities, skills training, entrepreneurship support, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes.
With this in mind, he said SEDC remains committed to playing a key role in realising the vision of a prosperous and advanced Sarawak to ensure that development is inclusive, sustainable, and focused on the well-being of the people
Meanwhile, guests were treated to a vibrant cultural showcase by dancers from the Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV), featuring their signature welcoming performance and the 'Tarian Nopeng'—a creative piece inspired by Gendang Melayu Sarawak, blending traditional drumming, pantun, and mukun in celebration of the 'Colours of Aidilfitri' theme.
A highlight of the celebration was the ceremonial cutting of the 'Kek Palak Meja'—a unique Sarawakian Hari Raya tradition.
Abang Johari and Abdul Aziz jointly participated in the symbolic act, which represents unity and prosperity, further underscoring Sarawak's rich cultural heritage at the corporate gathering. abang johari Abdul Aziz Husain pcds 2030 SEDC

'The Melanau Heritage Gallery is a Projek Rakyat that has been completed through grants from the Sarawak Premier and is now open to the public,' she said in a statement issued through the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas). Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg presented the cheque to the board's chair, Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, during a ceremony at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here yesterday. The presentation was witnessed by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. KUCHING (June 20): The Sarawak United Association of Private Chinese Secondary School Management Board (Sha Dong Zong) received an RM10 million grant from the Sarawak government today. The annual funding is for the 14 Chinese independent secondary schools in the state. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg presented the cheque to association board members here today. Association chairman Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming pointed out Chinese independent secondary schools have received such grants annually since 2014, when the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem was chief minister. The initial RM3 million grant increased yearly until five years ago when the association started to receive RM10 million each year. 'Over the past decade, the total cumulative funding has reached RM92 million. This long-term commitment has significantly alleviated the financial burden on school boards and provided a stable foundation for the sustainable development of all 14 Chinese independent secondary schools across Sarawak,' he said. Lau pointed out that the schools depended very much on public donations as they do not come under the Education Ministry. He thanked Abang Johari and the Sarawak government for their steadfast support. 'The continued allocation reflects the government's strong recognition of and commitment to the multi-stream education system in Sarawak, and serves as a testament to the enduring contributions and academic achievements of the Chinese independent school sector,' he stressed. 'In Chinese tradition, it is often said: 'To govern the nation well, one must first cultivate talent; and to cultivate talent, education must come first.' The Premier reaffirmed that enhancing the quality of local education remains a central pillar in Sarawak's strategic vision to become a high-income region by 2030.' Lau noted that the recently announced '2026 Free Higher Education Scheme for Outstanding Students' will also cover Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) candidates, reinforcing the Sarawak government's policy direction of nurturing home-grown talent. In alignment with the Premier's 'Third Language Policy', he said Chinese independent schools will continue to enhance their trilingual education model of Mandarin, Malay, and English, while actively advancing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. Among those present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian and Sha Dong Zong deputy chairman Datuk Richard Wee.

Abdul Karim (fifth left), flanked by his deputies, joins other officials for a photo session at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre. KUCHING (June 18): The Rainforest Youth Summit (RAYS) is more than just a platform for dialogue – it is a movement for co-creation and change, aimed at empowering young people to take ownership of their future, said Sarawak Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. Speaking at the summit's opening ceremony held at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre today, he emphasised that Sarawak's role as host extended beyond logistics and hospitality. 'This platform is designed so that youths will not merely be participants, but active architects of our shared future,' he said. 'We are committed to ensuring the outcomes of this summit influence real policy decisions and spur community-driven action,' he added. Now in its second year, RAYS has convened more than 20 speakers from 13 countries, offering a vibrant space for youth to share diverse perspectives on sustainability, indigenous knowledge, climate action, and youth advocacy. Abdul Karim, who is also State Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister, praised the Sarawak Tourism Board for its leadership in organising the summit and expressed gratitude to all collaborators, volunteers, and partners. He noted that the summit aligns with the state's Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which seeks to drive inclusive economic growth while prioritising environmental sustainability and social equity. Absul Karim also highlighted Sarawak's ongoing efforts in environmental conservation and innovation, including investments in renewable energy, development of biodiversity corridors, and the pursuit of United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) recognition for Sarawak Delta Geopark. 'Here in Sarawak, we are proud to lead by example. Our policies and programmes demonstrate that sustainability and cultural preservation are central to development,' he said. He added that RAYS supports Sarawak's alignment with global frameworks such as the Paris Agreement and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) regional strategies, by ensuring youth voices are represented in climate and policy dialogues. Urging participants to bring back the insights gained at RAYS to their communities, Abdul Karim stressed the importance of continued engagement. 'We want our youth – whether from Sarawak, Malaysia, or across Asean – to shape, lead, and curate the future they wish to inherit. 'Through platforms like RAYS, we ensure their voices are not only heard but are part of the policymaking process,' he said. He concluded by inviting delegates to experience Sarawak's rich heritage and culinary traditions, reminding them that Kuching has been recognised by Unesco as both a 'Creative City of Gastronomy' and a 'World City of Crafts'. Also present were Deputy State Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Ministers Datuk Sebastian Ting and Datuk Snowdan Lawan, as well as Deputy State Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Ministers Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat and Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu.
