Abd Karim: Youth must be architects of our shared future

Abdul Karim (fifth left), flanked by his deputies, joins other officials for a photo session at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre. KUCHING (June 18): The Rainforest Youth Summit (RAYS) is more than just a platform for dialogue – it is a movement for co-creation and change, aimed at empowering young people to take ownership of their future, said Sarawak Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. Speaking at the summit's opening ceremony held at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre today, he emphasised that Sarawak's role as host extended beyond logistics and hospitality. 'This platform is designed so that youths will not merely be participants, but active architects of our shared future,' he said. 'We are committed to ensuring the outcomes of this summit influence real policy decisions and spur community-driven action,' he added. Now in its second year, RAYS has convened more than 20 speakers from 13 countries, offering a vibrant space for youth to share diverse perspectives on sustainability, indigenous knowledge, climate action, and youth advocacy. Abdul Karim, who is also State Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister, praised the Sarawak Tourism Board for its leadership in organising the summit and expressed gratitude to all collaborators, volunteers, and partners. He noted that the summit aligns with the state's Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which seeks to drive inclusive economic growth while prioritising environmental sustainability and social equity. Absul Karim also highlighted Sarawak's ongoing efforts in environmental conservation and innovation, including investments in renewable energy, development of biodiversity corridors, and the pursuit of United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) recognition for Sarawak Delta Geopark. 'Here in Sarawak, we are proud to lead by example. Our policies and programmes demonstrate that sustainability and cultural preservation are central to development,' he said. He added that RAYS supports Sarawak's alignment with global frameworks such as the Paris Agreement and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) regional strategies, by ensuring youth voices are represented in climate and policy dialogues. Urging participants to bring back the insights gained at RAYS to their communities, Abdul Karim stressed the importance of continued engagement. 'We want our youth – whether from Sarawak, Malaysia, or across Asean – to shape, lead, and curate the future they wish to inherit. 'Through platforms like RAYS, we ensure their voices are not only heard but are part of the policymaking process,' he said. He concluded by inviting delegates to experience Sarawak's rich heritage and culinary traditions, reminding them that Kuching has been recognised by Unesco as both a 'Creative City of Gastronomy' and a 'World City of Crafts'. Also present were Deputy State Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Ministers Datuk Sebastian Ting and Datuk Snowdan Lawan, as well as Deputy State Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Ministers Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat and Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu. ‘Seniorpreneurs' initiative proposed to empower retirees in Sarawak's business landscape

Ripin (front, fourth left) joins the participants for a group photo. – Photo by Mohd Faisal Ahmad KUCHING (June 12): 'Seniorpreneurs', a special entrepreneurship programme for retirees, should be considered as part of ongoing efforts to boost entrepreneurial development in Sarawak, said State Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat. He proposed the idea when officiating the Program Seminar Usahawan Madani Asas Pembangunan Produk dan Servis (SAPPS) at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Auditorium today. He highlighted that many retirees possess the financial means and experience to become successful entrepreneurs. 'Perhaps one day, the relevant agencies or ministries can consider establishing a special programme for Seniorpreneurs – not veterans, but Seniorpreneurs – for those who are about to retire or have already retired,' he said. Ripin added that many retirees already have the capital and networks necessary to start businesses, whether it is from their pensions or savings through schemes such as the Employees Provident Fund (EPF). 'They have the financial resources, education, and experience. Perhaps they could collaborate with existing entrepreneurs in establishing ventures in various sectors.' He also emphasised that the initiative could help address issues faced by retirees including cases of pensioners falling victims to scams, saying: 'Why not provide them with a pathway to continue contributing through business?' The SAPPS programme was a collaboration between the National Entrepreneurship Institute (Insken), HRD Corp, the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment Sarawak (Mintred), as well as various entrepreneurship-related agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Ripin praised Insken and its partners for continuously supporting local entrepreneurs through knowledge-sharing platforms such as SAPPS, noting that 449 entrepreneurs participated in today's session. 'Your presence here today reflects a high level of commitment – a key characteristic of successful entrepreneurs,' he said. He emphasised the importance of knowledge as a form of capital in entrepreneurship, reminding participants of the need to adapt to changes, especially with the advancement of technology. 'Adapting to technology in areas such as marketing, business management, and production is crucial in improving productivity, expanding market reach, and increasing income,' he said. Adding on, Ripin also encouraged entrepreneurs 'not to rush success, but to trust the process'. 'Just like in school, we begin with kindergarten, then primary, secondary, and university. The same applies to entrepreneurship – we start small and step by step, we grow.' He expressed confidence that the programme aligns with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which aims to create more entrepreneurs and job opportunities in Sarawak. Moreover, Ripin congratulated Insken for opening its office in Sarawak two months ago, noting that this move reflects its commitment to developing local entrepreneurs. Also present were Insken chairman Mustaffa Kamil Ayub and director of Training Ts Dr Izham Naquiddin Shah Arif Shah, as well as HRD Corp head of regional operations division Muhamad Hafez Kamaruddin. entrepreneurial development Kuching ripin lamat Seniorpreneurs

Upcoming summit in Kuching to highlight green mobility

Hallman (seated, centre) and his committee members promote the 'Green Mobility Innovation Summit 2025', set to be held in Kuching this Sept 8 and 9.7 KUCHING (June 11): The Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak, in collaboration with the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) and Sarawak Skills, will be holding the 'Green Mobility Innovation Summit 2025' at Imperial Hotel Kuching, this Sept 8 and 9. Themed 'Driving the Future: Talent, Innovation and Sustainability in Green Mobility', the event is set to propel regional sustainable transport and green economy agenda. 'This year's summit theme reflects the urgent need to develop forward-looking strategies for a greener, more sustainable transport ecosystem in Southeast Asia,' said Sarawak Skills in a statement yesterday. 'The event is set to bring together policymakers, industry leaders, educators, and innovators from across the region to share expertise, foster collaboration, and promote the development of sustainable transportation solutions. 'It serves as a key component of the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2025 initiative, which aims to enhance regional connectivity and sustainable development. 'Central to this vision is the promotion of eco-friendly practices in infrastructure development, efforts to improve climate resilience, and the implementation of smart city initiatives designed to reduce carbon emissions and support environmental sustainability,' it added. In the same statement, Sarawak Skills executive director Hallman Sabri remarked: 'The significance of gathering various experts and delegates in the field of green mobility lies in its potential to nurture talent for sustainable transportation – an objective that is not merely a local priority, but a shared regional goal under the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2025. 'Therefore, the summit serves as an essential platform for aligning strategies, building competencies, and fostering regional cooperation in the transition toward a green economy.' The Green Mobility Innovation Summit 2025 is expected to feature more than 30 distinguished speakers and moderators from all across Asean, the UK, China, and Australia. Discussions will revolve around several key themes including 'Talent Development Through Education and Training', 'Innovative Technologies', 'Governance', and 'Global Collaboration'. 'The summit is deeply aligned with Sarawak's broader commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. 'As outlined in the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, the Sarawak government is prioritising the green economy as a strategic growth area. 'The state has already made significant strides in clean energy and sustainable mobility. 'Among these efforts is Sarawak's pioneering work in hydrogen fuel technology, including the introduction of Southeast Asia's first hydrogen-powered buses,' said Hallman in the statement. He added that the state was also expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and advancing smart city development in the urban centres, including Kuching. 'Additionally, Sarawak is investing heavily in TVET (technical and vocational education and training) to equip its workforce with the skills needed for the green and digital economy. 'These state-level initiatives position Sarawak as an ideal host for the summit and underscore its leadership in driving innovation and sustainability in the region. 'The organisers invite all participants to be part of this landmark event. 'Opportunities for collaboration are available across multiple areas, including speaker engagements, delegate participation, exhibition showcases, and joint promotional initiatives,' he pointed out. Supported by Business Events Sarawak (BE Sarawak), the Tribe Legacy Sarawak Campaign, and Sarawak–More to Discover, the 'Green Mobility Innovation Summit 2025' presents a unique platform to connect with thought leaders, explore cutting-edge technologies, and contribute to shaping a more sustainable future for the region. Uggah: PCDS 2030 ensures no Dayak left behind in Sarawak's devt

Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas – Photo by Mohd Faisal Ahmad KUCHING (May 30): Sarawak's Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 is a policy of inclusivity that guarantees no individual, including members of the Dayak community, will be left behind in the state's pursuit of progress, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas. He said the Sarawak government has committed substantial funding for rural development in line with this vision. 'Under Budget 2024, RM5,695 billion was allocated – and this has increased to RM6.8 billion in Budget 2025. These figures reflect our unwavering commitment to uplifting rural communities across Sarawak,' he said in his Gawai Dayak message today. Uggah noted that Sarawak is beginning to reap the benefits of its major bridge infrastructure projects. He said five bridge project had already been completed, including the Batang Saribas 1 Bridge in Pusa, Betong; the iconic Bintulu Jepak, Muara Lassa, Marudi and Batang Rajang bridges. He added that six more bridges, including the nation's longest river bridge, Batang Lupar 1 are expected to be completed by the end of this year. As such, the Bukit Saban assemblyman said it is only fitting that the Dayak community expresses its deepest gratitude to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for his inclusivity and pro rural development policy. 'Our state has made impressive strides in development, thanks to two key factors: our stability and racial harmony despite being home to 34 different ethnic groups and the visionary leadership of our Premier.' Uggah pointed out that Gawai is a meaningful occasion for Sarawakians to express heartfelt gratitude for the blessings they have received over the past year. He said it is also a time to pray for continued guidance, good health and prosperity in the years ahead. 'As we welcome this festive season, I am deeply moved by the richness of the Dayak cultural and traditional heritage. Having attended numerous pre-Gawai gatherings and dinners, I am truly inspired by the vibrant cultural performances and traditional cuisine on display. 'These traditions are sacred and central to our identity, and we must continue to uphold and preserve them with pride, commitment and passion,' he said. He added that Gawai season should also serves a 'bridge' to strengthen the bond of friendship, unity and harmony among all Sarawakians. He reminded those travelling home by road, river, or air to take all necessary precautions to ensure a safe journey. 'Let us celebrate our diversity under the spirit of 'Segulai Sejalai' – Together in Unity. Me and my family wish to extend our greetings of 'Selamat Nyambut Hari Gawai Dayak 2025' to the Dayak community in Sarawak,' he said. New community leadership proposal to be tabled by special committee in Q3 2025

Sikie speaking during today's DUN sitting. KUCHING (May 26): The Sarawak government has reviewed 923 applications for new community leader posts from all divisions across the state, says Minister in Sarawak Premier's Department Dato Sri John Sikie Tayai. According to him, this proposal for these Ketua Masyarakat and Ketua Kaum (KMKK) posts will be tabled at the Special Committee on the Management of KMKK Affairs meeting, set for the third quarter of this year. In Sarawak 'Ketua Masyarakat (community leader) hierarchy, the post of 'Ketua Kaum' or 'Ketua Kampung' corresponds to village headman, similar to 'Tuai Rumah', who leads a longhouse. Going up are the 'Kapitan' (clan/neighbourhood/group chief), the 'Penghulu' (sub-division or settlement chief), the 'Pemanca' (district or regional chief), and the highest 'Temenggong' (paramount leader). Adding on, Sikie said the applications were reviewed based on general guidelines, including jurisdiction area size and the rising number of households. One general criterion for the creation of a Ketua Kaum post would be the minimum of 20 households in a village, or 20 'doors' (units) in a longhouse. 'The Sarawak government is aware of the need to increase the number of KMKK positions across the state. 'This is to further enhance the effectiveness of government service delivery to the people,' he said in his winding-up speech at the DUN sitting earlier today. On salary and allowance adjustments for KMKKs, the Kakus assemblyman said the last revision made by the state government was in 2018, which set an increase of RM100. 'As such, a new proposal to revise the salaries of community leaders and the allowances for Ketua Kaum has been tabled at the special committee meeting, which has decided that the proposal should be further detailed. 'This is to ensure the proposed rates are reasonable and commensurate with the responsibilities and roles of KMKKs,' he said. In this respect, Sikie said the government acknowledged the increasingly important roles and responsibilities of KMKKs in line with the state's aspiration of achieving the developed status by 2030 under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. community leader DUN sitting John Sikie Tayai Ketua Masyarakat lead
