How Derek Carr spent his first day of retirement after shock decision to quit the NFL and pass on $30m deal
Derek Carr won't be relaxing in retirement if the first day of his post-NFL life is anything to go by.
The former Raiders and Saints quarterback shocked fans on Saturday by revealing that he would hang up his cleats rather than face an arduous return from shoulder injury.
A few hours after the announcement, Carr's wife Heather posted a video on social media detailing the 34-year-old's 'first day of retirement'.
'What are you going to do?' she asked the quarterback, who announced: 'We're going to go outside and run as a family.'
The video then showed a topless Carr sprinting across his back yard, trailed by the family's four children - Dallas, Deker, Deakon and Brooklyn.
The 34-year-old then headed to strengthen his legs in the gym, where his kids were also seen working out by playing basketball.
Derek Carr enjoyed an action-packed day after announcing his retirement from the NFL
Carr later enjoyed a date with his wife, who bought him lunch, before he picked up his clubs and headed out to play golf.
'I'm going to make the tour,' the former quarterback joked as he loaded his bag into his truck. Carr is believed to have a handicap of around six.
After playing golf, Carr was back out in the yard with his kids, where he put them through baseball drills. They later enjoyed a family dinner before Carr headed out to flower the plants.
'Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with Heather, I've decided to retire from the National Football League,' Carr said in his statement.
'For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience.
'It's difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special. Your unwavering support has meant the world to us.'
Carr began throwing again in March after his 2024 season ended December 8 due to a concussion and a left-hand injury.
The 34-year-old soon began experiencing discomfort in his throwing shoulder and subsequent medical scans revealed 'significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff,' according to the Saints.
Although surgery was an option, it would put his entire 2025 season in jeopardy and still couldn't ensure a return to full strength.
So, after discussing with his wife, Heather, as well as the team and outside medical personnel, Carr decided to end his NFL career.
His sudden retirement comes after his recent revelation that Heather recently suffered a miscarriage. The former Fresno State star said they had been scheduled to travel to New Orleans to get a diagnosis on his shoulder injury when he had to rush his wife to the hospital.
Carr, who has been married to Heather since 2012, revealed that neither he nor his wife were aware they were expecting until the medics informed them that the miscarriage was behind her illness.

Manchester City vs Al Ain predictions: Club World Cup tips and odds
Our expert has three tips for the Club World Cup contest between Manchester City and Al Ain at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia (2am Monday BST kick-off). We think the Light Blues will rack up the goals against their UAE Pro League counterparts. Manchester City vs Al Ain tips Manchester City -2 goals on handicap @ 4/5 with Sky Bet Phil Foden to score @ 5/4 with Sky Bet Over 1.5 first-half goals @ evens with Sky Bet Odds courtesy of Sky Bet. Correct at the time of publication and subject to change. Already a Sky Bet member? Check out more free bets from the best betting sites, reviewed by our experts. City unlikely to hold back The Premier League side comfortably justified being tipped as favourites in a 2-0 win over Moroccan club Wydad in their first game at the Club World Cup. Now they have settled into the tournament, they could have an even more comprehensive victory over Al Ain. City took the lead after just two minutes in their Group G opener, dominating the affair in Philadelphia, and they look overpriced at -2 goals on the handicap – in other words to win by at least three goals – against Al Ain at 4/5. Debutants Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki looked sharp and there are plenty of City players waiting in the wings and wanting to impress boss Pep Guardiola. Al Ain were destroyed 5-0 by Juventus last time out, conceding all those goals by the 58th minute, and could have a tough time against an even stronger City outfit. Foden can net again Midfielder Phil Foden did not enjoy his best season in a City shirt last season but he started his Club World Cup campaign on the front foot, impressing as the team's key creative outlet in their victory over Wydad. Foden scored and assisted in the game but also managed four shots, three of which were on target, and he is a good bet to score at 5/4 against Al Ain. Guardiola could make sweeping changes for this contest but Foden will surely keep his spot after finally showing some form. He can profit if the floodgates open. Fast start again from Guardiola's men The Light Blues scored both of their goals in victory over Wydad before the interval, and over 1.5 first-half goals appeals again at evens with Sky Bet. It was evident from City's approach that they wanted to get the game against Wydad wrapped up quickly in order to rotate personnel, and the same could be true in this contest. Guardiola's side are typically fast starters anyway, netting a league-high 41 first-half goals in last season's Premier League, and Al Ain were 3-0 down after just 31 minutes against Juventus in their tournament opener. Livvy Dunne trolls MLB mascot with brutal takedown after he shot his shot with gymnastics icon
An ambitious baseball mascot failed to charm Livvy Dunne after shooting his shot with the gymnastics icon this week. During the second game of Detroit's double header with Pittsburgh on Thursday, Paws - who has been the Tigers ' mascot since 1995 - held up a sign which read 'Sup Livvy Dunne' while her Pirates-star boyfriend Paul Skenes was on the mound. But his bold attempt to win her over was quickly shut down. In a viral response, Dunne quoted a photo of Paws' sign on X and wrote: 'Sorry… not my type of tiger,' while tagging Detroit. The ex-gymnast was likely referencing the Tigers of LSU - the school she and Skenes attended. Dunne met the baseball sensation at LSU, with the pair first going public with their relationship in the summer of 2023. Tigers mascot Paws held up a sign aimed at Dunne as her boyfriend Paul Skenes was pitching Skenes, who finished the second game against the Tigers on Thursday with two earned runs and nine strikeouts in six innings pitched, is currently in his second year with the Pirates after a historic rookie season. After being drafted first overall in 2023, the pitcher quickly established himself as one of the best in the sport and was eventually named National League Rookie of the Year. Dunne recently shared a glimpse of her 'east coast summer' with Skenes on Monday as the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover star showed how she's been enjoying the warm weather thus far. The TikTok star, who announced her retirement from gymnastics in April, has had a busy couple of months as she attended a SI Swimsuit party last month and walked on the runway for the brand more recently. And the Westwood, New Jersey native clearly enjoyed spending some time close to home as she gleefully recapped her life of late on Instagram. In the first picture of the carousel post, Dunne sat on the grass in a bathing suit eating a cherry while her dog, Roux, sat nearby. She also shared a picture of her with influencer Alix Earle, while she's also spent much of her time cheering on Skenes for the Pirates. The LSU graduate shared a picture of herself in a Pirates hat, a view of Pittsburgh's PNC Park and a snap of Skenes playing golf as he enjoyed some time away from the baseball diamond.
