Glad Tidings

Elham Aboul Fateh
Glad tidings announced by the Prime Minister that this summer will be without power outages. The government will bear significant financial burdens for not shedding loads. We hope this promise is fulfilled, as many problems occur due to power outages. This statement gave us hope as we suffered from the frequent power outages over the past two years, which greatly affected our lives.
Every summer, a power outage marked the beginning of daily suffering. I will never forget what happened in July 2023, when the power cut hit Umm Al-Masryeen Hospital in Giza, forcing the transfer of five critically patients, to other hospitals to ensure continuity of care. In March 2023, when El Mahalla General Hospital suffered a sudden power outage, patients were transferred from intensive care units to other hospitals with transformers for their safety.
When the power cuts out, homes turn into ovens. Children sleep sweating, the sick and elderly suffocate from the heat, devices break down, food spoils, elevators break down, a hospital loses patients, and livelihoods are cut off because some lose their jobs due to the power outage. Others suffer psychologically due to the feeling of instability they experience daily. This suffering affects everyone's life, especially in the intense heat.
Electricity is not a luxury, but a basic necessity of life. Its presence means comfort and safety.
A power outage, even for short periods, can cause significant harm to people and increase their suffering. We have exams coming up and the heat is intense.
The good news that the Prime Minister announced is very good, especially since the government will bear these costs. We hope that there will be campaigns to rationalize consumption despite the lack of power outages. I know that electricity fees have increased, and this high price pushes us to rationalize consumption, but the existence of campaigns to rationalize consumption is very important.
We have to thank the Prime Minister and the government for promising that this summer will at least be free of power outages and suffering. The government will certainly fullfil its promise, and this summer will be different from previous ones.
