Marshall Football Preview 2025: How Fast Can the Thundering Herd Rebuild?

Miami Herald05-06-2025

How do you go from what Marshall pulled off in 2024 to a complete and total rebuild that fast? The Herd got red hot, ripped through a relatively weak conference slate, won the game it had to pull off at James Madison, and shut down Louisiana cold for a 31-3 victory for the Sun Belt title. The ten-win season was the first since the Doc Holliday days of 2015, and then head coach Charles Huff took the Southern Miss job. Almost everyone jumped into the portal, there weren't enough guys around to play the bowl game, and now Marshall is starting from scratch.
52-year-old Tony Gibson has never been a head coach. He comes in after spending the last six seasons as NC State's defensive coordinator, and yeah, he might have to work his way into the gig. It's not his fault. At last count, over 25 players had left through the portal. It could come together fast. If the running game finds a groove right away, the schedule is manageable enough to come up with a shocker of a strong first campaign under Gibson.Going 0-12 wouldn't be a total stunner, either, considering it's not just about the new faces, there's woefully little overall time logged in at the FBS level among the protected starters.
Marshall Thundering Herd Preview 2025: Offense
X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFN- Welcome to the Jacksonville State Thundering Herd. Former Gamecock offensive coordinator Rod Smith made the move over to Marshall after helping to lead one of the nation's most interesting and dangerous attacks. This is all starting from scratch, but …
- They have a few nice quarterbacks. Zion Turner was in the Jax State system last year, but didn't play much. Carlos Del Rio-Wilson (Syracuse) is a dangerous option who'll get every shot at the job with the all-around skills to step in right away. For comparison, last year's Gamecock quarterback Tyler Huff ran for 1,344 yards and 15 scores, and …
- This system will hammer the hot running back. Tre Stewart led Jacksonville State with 1,638 yards and 25 touchdowns, and now it's up to Michael Allen (UNLV) and Jo'Shon Barbie (McNeese State) to combine forces. Both averaged over five yards per carry last season for their respective schools.
- There's more continuity on the offensive line than anywhere else on the team, at least in the interior with Logan Osburn back at center and Jalen Slappy a veteran guard to work around. 348-pound Shunmarkus Adams should be set at the other guard spot. The tackles are coming from the portal - 6-9, 356-pound Tyler McDuffie (Hampton) should be the best of the lot.- The Herd have a star in tight end Toby Payne - he needs the ball more. He tied for the team lead with six touchdown catches, but all of the other receivers of note are gone. Demarcus Lacey (Jacksonville State) has speed on the outside. 6-3, 200-pound Antonio Harmon got in a little work at Mississippi State, and Ben Turner (West Liberty) is a quick inside target.
Marshall Thundering Herd Preview 2025: Defense
- There's no replacing the pass rush that was so good last year. 17-sack Mike Green is a Baltimore Raven, and just about everyone else who came up with a sack is gone. Paul Hutson (Campbell) is a big end coming in, but it's the inside that has to shine right away.335-pound KaTron Evans (Charlotte), 330-pound Tyas Martin (Jackson State), Jamaal Whice (South Carolina) and Jalil Rivera-Harvey (Arizona State) bring the bulk.- There isn't much experience among the new linebackers, but Javae Gilmore (Mississippi State) is a big body for the interior, and quick Jibreel Al-Amin (Jacksonville State) made 23 tackles in a rotation.
- The secondary caught a bit of a break when Jadarius Green-McKnight chose to come back. The safety made 38 tackles with a pick-six, corner Daytione Smith got in a little time, and everyone else is from the portal. Most of the new parts are nice prospects without a ton of proven production, but safety Boogie Trotter (Tennessee State) should be a statistical star coming off a 62-tackle season. Corner Marvae Myers-Glover (Middle Tennessee) started his college career in 2019, and made 41 stops and broke up four passes last season.
Marshall Thundering Herd Key to the Season
Get the running game working right away. The offense won't be smooth, but as long as the experienced interior and huge tackles can blast away, the quick backfield should control games a bit on the ground. Time of possession won't be on the Herd's side, so …
Marshall Thundering Herd Key Player
Katron Evans, DT Sr.This goes for all the giant new defensive tackles. This gets ugly fast if the Herd can't hold up against the run, and that's where the 335-pound Charlotte transfer comes in. He needs to be an anchor.
Marshall Thundering Herd Top Transfer, Biggest Transfer Loss
Top Transfer In: Michael Allen, RB Jr.And throw in Jo'Shon Barbie from McNeese State. Give Allen and Barbie a little bit of room, and these two should be able to rip off yards in chunks. They're both quick backs - Allen looked good when he had his chances at UNLV - and should take over a game or two.Top Transfer Out: Christian Fitzpatrick, WR Sr.Take your pick of any one of the bazillion transfers who might be the most important. Fitzpatrick has the 6-4 size, the deep speed, and the production with a 34-catch, six-touchdown grab season for the Herd, averaging 17 yards per play. Now he's at Oklahoma State.
Marshall Thundering Herd Key Game
at Middle Tennessee, Sept. 20How far do the Herd have to go to be decent? The hope is to get past Missouri State and Eastern Kentucky to get to 2-1, and if there's a win over Middle Tennessee on the road in the Sun Belt opener, this could be a surprise team.- 2025 Marshall Schedule Breakdown

Marshall Thundering Herd 2025 Season Prediction, Win Total, What Will Happen
Out of all 136 college football teams coming into the season, Marshall is the biggest guess when it comes to figuring out what's about to happen. The very, very sheepish call is that the offense works just enough at times to push past a few weak defenses, but there won't be a lick of consistency anywhere across the board. So let's go with this. There will be a win over Eastern Kentucky early on, maybe there's some success against Missouri State, and things will start to get better as the season moves on.
It's hard to see the Herd as a major favorite over anyone in Sun Belt play, but there's a chance this changes big one way or another in a real hurry.Set The Marshall Thundering Herd Win Total At … 3.5Likely Wins: Eastern Kentucky50/50 Games: at App State, at Coastal Carolina, at Georgia Southern, Georgia State, at Middle Tennessee, Missouri State, Old Dominion, Texas StateLikely Losses: at Georgia, James Madison, at Louisiana

Ranking Georgia football's 2025 home games from worst to first

The Georgia Bulldogs have a great home schedule for the 2025 season after having a pretty pedestrian home slate in 2024. Georgia's top home games are against Ole Miss, Alabama and Texas. Georgia fans have a lot to of interesting games to look forward to in 2025. The Bulldogs play three non-Power Four opponents and four SEC foes at home. Georgia enters the 2025 college football season on a 31 game home winning streak, which is the longest in the country. Georgia's last home loss came to the South Carolina Gamecocks in double overtime on Oct. 12, 2019. Since Georgia's last home loss, the Bulldogs have won two SEC championships and two national championships. However, Georgia will have a tough time going undefeated at home in 2025. Ranking Georgia football's 2025 home games from worst to best 7. Austin Peay Governors Austin Peay is Georgia's only Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) opponent this fall. The Governors lost to Georgia 45-0 in Athens back in 2018. There's no reason to think this game will be competitive. With a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff, Georgia fans in attendance will likely be battling the heat. Austin Peay is Georgia's second straight non-Power Four opponent to open the season, but doe not come with the excitement of the season opener. Fans tuning in on TV may not like the channel selection for this one either. Date: Sept. 6 at 3:30 p.m. (all times listed at ET)TV: ESPN+/SEC Network+ 6. Charlotte 49ers The Charlotte 49ers have just one bowl appearance in their short school history (since 2015). The 49ers play in the American conference and likely won't be competitive with Georgia, but it will be UGA's last home game of the season, so it will be celebration for Georgia's senior class. As an added bonus, we like the 12:45 p.m. kickoff time for two reasons. First of all, Georgia plays Georgia Tech on Friday, so it gives the Bulldogs a bit of extra rest. Secondly, Georgia fans will be able to get some sunlight on what is likely to be a cool November day. Date: Nov. 22 at 12:45 SEC Network 5. Marshall Thundering Herd Marshall is the best of Georgia's three non-Power Four opponents this season. Georgia plays Marshall in the season opener, so it is must-watch action for Bulldog fans to see how the 2025 edition of UGA looks. Marshall won at Notre Dame back in 2022 under current head coach Charles Huff. The Thundering Herd are coming off a strong 10-3 season where they won the Sun Belt Conference championship. However, Marshall opted out of the Independence Bowl after too many players entered the transfer portal. Marshall is capable of making things interesting with Georgia in Week 1. Date: Aug. 30 at 3:30 ESPN 4. Kentucky Wildcats Now we're getting into the good games. Georgia plays Kentucky in their second SEC home game of the season. Georgia plays the Wildcats a week after Alabama, so the Bulldogs could be dealing with a big game hangover. Kentucky always smells like a trap for Georgia and 2025 is no different. Kentucky has given Georgia a lot of trouble over the years, but Georgia has won 15 straight games over the Wildcats. Georgia fans should expect another physical, low-scoring battle against the Wildcats. Date: Oct. 4 at noonTV: ESPN or ABC 3. Ole Miss Rebels Georgia fell at Ole Miss 28-10 last season after dominating the Rebels in Athens during the a convincing 52-17 win in 2023. Ole Miss back up quarterback Austin Simmons shredded the Georgia defense on one drive after Jaxson Dart briefly left in the 2024 matchup. Simmons is expected to start for coach Lane Kiffin and the Rebels in 2024. Georgia-Ole Miss should be a very entertaining game. Both teams will look very different than their 2024 versions as both teams had at least eight players picked (Ole Miss 8, Georgia 13) in the 2025 NFL draft. Date: Oct. 18 at flex kickoff time (afternoon or night)TV: To be determined 2. Alabama Crimson Tide The Alabama game is technically Georgia's only scheduled home night game of the season (both Texas and Ole Miss are flex games), but we'd be surprised if the Bulldogs don't get at least two night home games. Last season, Alabama beat Georgia 41-34 after the Bulldogs mounted a furious comeback. The 2025 edition of Georgia-Alabama will feature two new quarterbacks and no Nick Saban, but the Dawgs and Crimson Tide are still two of the top programs in college football. Both schools are looking to make a name for themselves in 2025 and as usual a lot will be on the line when Georgia and Alabama meet. Georgia and Alabama have combined to win five of 11 national championships during the College Football Playoff era (they faced off in two national title games during this time span) and 10 of the last 11 SEC championships (they met in three of those 10 SEC championship games). Date: Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. TV: ABC 1. Texas Longhorns Arch Manning and Texas will travel to Athens for the first ever time as a member of the SEC. Texas is projected to be the preseason No. 1 team. The Longhorns played Georgia twice in 2024 with the Dawgs winning both meetings including the 2024 SEC championship. Both teams are expected to contend for the national championship and the winner of the Georgia-Texas game could clinch a berth in the SEC championship. The Georgia-Texas game has a little more intrigue than the Georgia-Alabama game because Georgia has never played Texas in Sanford Stadium and because it is later in the season. The Georgia-Texas game could also effectively eliminate the loser from the College Football Playoff depending on how the season shakes out. If we could only go to one UGA home game this season, then we'd pick the Georgia-Texas game. Date: Nov. 15 at flex kickoff time (afternoon or night)TV: To be determined

Florida Football Preview 2025: Billy Napier Has His Best Gator Team Yet - But Is It Enough?

Florida is supposed to be playing for national the program of Spurrier, and Urban, and Tebow, and fun, and 'n', and gun, and spread, and Wuerffel - and basketball national titles - and Billy Napier was and is supposed to be the guy who came in and got everything back to rough has it been? Starting with the final season under Dan Mullen, the 26 losses mark the worst four-year run of Gator football since 1978 to 1981, and there was a 0-10-1 campaign in that mix. X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFN Florida Offense BreakdownFlorida Defense BreakdownSeason Prediction, Win Total, Keys to SeasonBefore last year, the three straight losing seasons were the first time that happened since a stretch from 1945 to 1947. And following a 49-17 loss to Texas in mid-November, Florida appeared to be destined for its first four-season losing run since the then the offense clicked, the defense didn't allow more than 17 points in any of the final four games, Napier came up with a strong recruiting class, and now there's hope again that the big production is about to first, Florida just has to get closer to the pin against the good teams. This is the best squad yet under Napier. It was rebuilt to this point with a strong combination of depth, youth, and talent. There weren't any major losses through the transfer portal that can't be fixed, and there weren't a ton of players coming in other than to patch a few lines are strong, there's a rising superstar at quarterback in DJ Lagway, and the kicking game might be the best in the SEC. But the team needs to be in more tight games to let the special teams be the of the 19 losses under Napier, 12 of them were by double-digits, including four of the five defeats last year. And that's where the bar should be set. Of course Florida needs to be good enough to be a regular in the College Football Playoff, and of course Napier needs to do more, but out of those 19 losses under Napier, 13 were against the elite of the elite that finished with ten wins or this year's schedule might be the toughest of the again, it's Florida. It's supposed to be one of those elites among elites that take down all of the other good programs. It might not happen this year, but 2025 has to be the final season before it does. Texas Longhorns add elite infielder through the transfer portal

After an impressive 2025 campaign that ended with an SEC championship, the Texas Longhorns have been stockpiling talent. On Saturday, they continued to improve their roster with the addition of Kaleb Freeman. The veteran infielder is coming off a stellar season at the plate for Georgia State and is ready to build on his success. In 51 games during the 2025 campaign, Freeman posted a .358 batting average while driving in 54 runs. The Flowery Branch High School product showed off his power with 42 extra-base hits, including 16 home runs. While Freeman was an on-base machine, he also made an impact with his speed, recording 13 stolen bases. Advertisement Due to his stellar play, Freeman added to his trophy case. He was named the 2025 Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year. The Georgia native also earned a spot on the 2025 All-Sun Belt 2nd team. Although Freeman will have to adjust to a new program, he is not in unfamiliar territory. The Longhorns are the fifth different program Freeman will have appeared in a game for when the regular season begins. He started his college career at North Georgia before going to St. John's River State. Before joining Georgia State, he spent one year at Auburn. Now, Freeman will be looking to show that he can be a dangerous bat for an SEC powerhouse. Freeman is the third player to join the program this week. The other additions were RHP Hayes Holton and OF Jack Moroknek. With the talented trio in the mix, Texas is in an excellent position to end its title drought. With more talent on the board, the Longhorns may not be done adding to their roster. Advertisement While the offseason is far from over, the Longhorns have been one of the busiest teams in the country when it comes to adding elite talent through the portal.
