Bharat Collections Summit & Awards 2025 Spotlights India's ₹55,000 Cr Recovery Market
India's debt collections sector, valued at ₹ 55,000 crore as per a McKinsey and Spocto X report, is emerging as a critical force in the broader credit ecosystem. At a time when conversations around responsible lending and recovery are gaining ground, the Bharat Collections Summit & Awards 2025 provided a timely and focused event to foreground this pivotal but often underrepresented function. As India's largest collections event it brought together some of the nation's major lenders, collections leaders, agencies and policymakers.
Held at The Lalit, Mumbai on 12th June 2025, and organised by The Brainalytics, the event brought together more than 200 senior leaders from over 50 financial institutions. Spocto X served as the Presenting Partner, while YuCollect was the Collections Infrastructure Partner. The day-long summit aimed to reframe collections not just as an operational necessity but as a strategic, tech-enabled driver of financial stability.
Find the spotlight on leaders reimagining collections
Anil Tandon, Senior EVP – Retail Portfolio Management, HDFC Bank, opened the summit with a keynote on the 'AI Revolution in Collections.'His metaphor of'compliance as the third umpire' struck a chord across the room — positioning AI as a strategic partner in driving customer fairness and smarter recoveries.
This sentiment carried through the day. Krishnendu Majumdar, CPTO, Yubi Group, challenged the industry to look beyond cost-saving and view collections as a growth driver. He called for'agentic AI' to help institutions scale ethically into underserved Bharat.
Sagar Chaudhuri, SVP II & Head – Strategy, HDFC Bank, reinforced the urgency of creating more unified systems and transparent data flows, advocating for infrastructure-level reform that can scale responsibly.
In a grounded and highly practical session, Sanju Mangrulkar, General Manager – Credit Monitoring & Policy, Central Bank of India, discussed how his team is already using AI to trace alternate borrower contacts and surface asset-related data to aid recoveries.
Sukhvinder Kaur, Chief General Manager, State Bank of India, offered insights into the scale at which SBI is deploying technology. She shared that SBI — with one of the largest retail lending portfolios in the country — is using over 150 in-house AI models across fraud detection, early warning signals, and predictive collections. She emphasised that digital-first lending must be supported by digital-first collections, highlighting how AI enables personalised nudges, life-cycle monitoring, and customer-centric recovery strategies.
DS Tripathi, Executive Director, Aadhar Housing Finance, drew attention to the operational realities of small-ticket lending, arguing that inefficient systems increase credit costs and can ultimately threaten business viability.
Adding to the conversation on technology-led infrastructure, Bhavin Parekh, Co-Founder of YuCollect, anchored a panel on digital design and collections operations at scale. The discussion focused on how a unified, intelligent framework could create measurable impact across stakeholders.
Throughout the day, panel sessions brought together experts from a wide range of institutions including ICICI Home Finance, SBI, John Deere Financial, Cent Bank Home Finance, IDBI Bank, Aadhar Housing Finance, Tyger Capital, Bajaj Capital, NPCI, Bank of Baroda, DBS, Poonawalla Fincorp, DCB Bank, Karnataka Bank, and Fibe.Topics ranged from regulatory compliance to empathetic borrower engagement, and from vendor management to the future of automation in collections.
The Central Bank of India team received the 'Outstanding Achievement in Collections Strategy' award.
As the day progressed, a shared consensus began to emerge — that India's collections sector must transition from reactive operations to proactive systems, rooted in ethics, data governance, and long-term sustainability.
The evening featured the inaugural Bharat Collections Awards, designed to recognise excellence and innovation within the industry. Devarsh Mapuskar, Business Head, Spocto X, and Kapil Rohilla, Head of Operations, Spocto X, led the awards ceremony. Nilesh Dasri, Product Head – Digital Debt Servicing, ICICI Bank, joined the Spocto X leadership in felicitating the winners.
Central Bank of India was named 'Best Collection Team of the Year,' a recognition accepted by Sanju Mangrulkar, Sukesh Jha, R.L. Nayak, and Amit Verma. Other notable awardees included Datta Chavan of Reliance ARC for innovation in collection practices,Vishal Chugh of Tata Capital as Debt Management Innovator, and Binit Jha of IDBI Bank as the 'Most Promising CDO'. Girish Patnaik of Bank of Baroda was honoured for their contributions to digital collections, while Ashish Jain, also from Bank of Baroda, received recognition for 'Ethical Leader in Risk and Debt Management'.
What set this summit apart was its clear call to action: the collections function is no longer just a back-end support unit but a strategic pillar that intersects with customer experience, credit health, and institutional trust. As Spocto X and YuCollect continue to shine a spotlight on the sector, the industry is inching closer to a future where collections are not just efficient and tech-driven, but also empathetic and inclusive.
This summit wasn't just a one-day gathering. It marked a foundational shift in how collections are viewed, managed, and evolved across institutions — from silos to systems, from paperwork to platforms, and from instinct to intelligence.

Gas blowout at ONGC's Assam well under control: Flow drops sharply, US experts back containment plan
NEW DELHI: State-run Oil and Natural Gas Corporation ( ONGC ) on Saturday said it had made significant progress in its efforts to contain the gas blowout at well RDS#147A in Assam's Rudrasagar oilfield, with the flow rate of natural gas having reduced substantially. The blowout — or uncontrolled gas flow — occurred on June 12 at a well operated by private contractor S K Petro Services in Barichuk, Sivasagar district. 'ONGC has made significant headway in its well control operations at RDS#147A, with the flow rate of gas having reduced substantially, marking a critical step forward in containment efforts,' the company said in a statement, PTI reported. An international expert team from US-based CUDD Pressure Control arrived at the site on Friday and reviewed ONGC's containment strategy. According to the company, the experts expressed agreement with the steps taken and affirmed the effectiveness of ONGC's approach. While ONGC did not specify a timeline for bringing the well completely under control, it said site preparations were underway for the next phase of operations, which include removal of tubulars from the well and mobilisation of cranes to assist in clearing the rig floor. As part of safety measures, 24x7 water blanketing continues, and flood-level monitoring of the nearby Dikhow River is in progress to ensure environmental compliance. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo 'ONGC is continuously monitoring the low explosive limit (LEL) levels of air around the well site through real-time gas detectors to ensure safety. Medical assistance is being provided at the relief camp to support all those in need,' the statement added. Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, in a LinkedIn post on Friday, said he was closely monitoring the operations. 'The Crisis Management Team headed by experienced blowout control specialists are on the job,' he wrote. He confirmed that nearby residents had been relocated to a relief camp, with food, security, and essential supplies arranged by local authorities. Water blanketing was being used as a key precaution to prevent fire, he said. Puri also noted that the composition of gas — mostly methane (97%) — was dispersing upward and not accumulating at ground level, thereby limiting the hazard. 'Air quality monitoring shows levels are within safe limits even at a 50-100 metre radius from the well,' the minister added. The wellhead pressure has dropped significantly — from 2,600 psi to 500 psi — a sign of falling gas intensity. 'We are trying to contain the situation through junk shot operation and will try pumping kill fluids today. If this does not suffice, capping of the well shall also be considered,' Puri said. Tech firms, content industry debate AI, copyright at ministry of commerce event
Who owns the data that fuels artificial intelligence (AI)? That was the central — and contentious — question debated by representatives from big tech firms and the content industry during a two-day stakeholder consultation organised by ministry of commerce and industry's department for promotion of industry and internal trade (DPIIT). A nine-member DPIIT committee will soon publish a working paper outlining whether India's copyright law needs to be updated to address challenges posed by AI. (Getty Images/iStockphoto/ Representative photo) The meetings were chaired by DPIIT additional secretary Himani Pande on June 19 and 20. At the centre of the discussion was whether tech companies should be allowed to freely mine the internet, which includes copyrighted books, articles, music, images, and videos, to train their AI models. The content industry raised concerns over their copyrighted data being used to train AI models without permission, while tech companies argued that training their models requires massive amounts of data—much of which is copyrighted. The startups on the first day urged the DPIIT to ensure a level playing field, arguing that while they are still in the early stages of building their AI models, larger companies have already trained theirs, often without facing the same level of regulatory scrutiny or restrictions, said a participant from the tech meet on June 19. A representative from the Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA), who was present at the content industry meeting, said, 'DNPA firmly believes that utilising the content of digital news publishers, without consent, for AI training and subsequent generative AI applications, such as search assistance and information purposes, constitutes an infringement of copyright.' Also Read: HC experts differ in OpenAI copyright case 'The association advocates for a regime that ensures fair compensation for content producers, recognising their rights in the digital landscape,' he added. A stakeholder meeting for the content industry saw creators worried about being 'strip-mined for data,' a participant said. One of the key topics discussed at both meetings was whether India should permit text and data mining (TDM) under an opt-out framework. TDM is a technique used by AI systems to scan and learn from vast volumes of data, including text and images. Also Read: First meeting held on AI's impact on India's copyright framework An alternative mechanism that came up during the meeting on Friday was whether a statutory licensing mechanism for AI training purposes might work, which involves allowing the use of copyrighted works without direct permission, provided companies pay a government-set fee and follow certain rules. The DPIIT sought industry input on the copyright status of AI-generated works—an issue also at the heart of the ANI vs OpenAI case in the Delhi High Court, where the news agency filed a lawsuit against the ChatGPT creator for allegedly using its articles to train AI models. 'Who should be considered the actual owner of content generated by AI? If a user puts significant effort into crafting a prompt that leads to a specific output, does that make the user the rightful owner or does the ownership lie with the creators of the AI model?' a person representing an AI startup said. Also read: Data for training stored overseas, copyright law doesn't apply: OpenAI These stakeholder meetings build on the work of a nine-member DPIIT committee formed in April, which includes IP lawyers, industry representatives, IT ministry officials, academicians, and DPIIT officials. While the committee has been meeting regularly since May 16, HT had earlier reported that one member expressed discomfort with being on the committee, saying they lacked AI expertise. The committee, which heard different views from the tech and content industries during the two-day meeting, will soon publish a working paper outlining whether India's copyright law needs to be updated to address challenges posed by AI.
