Saifuddin Nasution: 'Our companies can learn from both countries' AI ecosystems'
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has only gained in the technology space from choosing to work with both China and the United States, instead of taking sides between the two superpowers, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
'For a country like Malaysia, our practical position is we do not need to choose sides.
'Instead, we have chosen to work with both.
'I believe that it has brought us more benefits,' the Home Minister said during a panel session at the Asean-GCC Economic Forum.
Saifuddin Nasution pointed out that the US and China are ahead in terms of artificial intelligence (AI) research and investment.
By working with both, he said, Malaysia is able to bring the most effective and affordable AI tools into the country.
'We choose what is best for Malaysia based on our needs. This balanced approach gives us more room to negotiate, innovate and protect our national interests.
'At the same time, it also builds more trust with partners across Asean, the Gulf and the world,' he added.
He said this also meant that Malaysia's young talents can train in both the United States' Silicon Valley and Shenzhen in China.
The minister said Malaysia has used AI in border control and also to filter inappropriate content in films, he added.
'Our companies can learn from both countries' AI ecosystems. Those are the clear benefits of taking this position. We enjoy the best of both worlds,' he said.
Economist and author of The New China Playbook: Beyond Socialism and Capitalism, Dr Keyu Jin said while the United States and China had reduced direct links following their trade disputes, they still have indirect links through other countries.
'If we look at the data, the competing blocs ... have reduced their direct linkages but arguably, their indirect linkages are still very much (there). Trade and investments with non-aligned countries have shot up,' she said.

Ringgit ends higher against dollar on safe-haven retreat, but mixed against major currencies
KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 — The ringgit rebounded from yesterday's losses to end higher against the US dollar on Friday, as the latest developments on the Iran-Israel war sparked some buying interest in emerging currencies, a dealer said. The ringgit performed mixed against its Asean peers. The local note advanced versus the Indonesian rupiah to 259.2/259.7 from 259.5/259.9 on Thursday and rose vis-à-vis the Thai baht to 12.9727/9969 from 12.9966/13.0513 previously. However, it weakened against the Singapore dollar to 3.3088/3140 from 3.3072/3102 yesterday and slid versus the Philippine peso to 7.43/7.45 from 7.41/7.42 at the previous close. — Bernama

Mohd Khalid Ismail appointed new IGP

The handover-of-duties ceremony took place at the Kuala Lumpur Police Training Centre (Pulapol), witnessed by the Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and attended by the Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil as well as senior officers of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). Advertisement Mohd Khalid, 60, has held various important positions in the PDRM Special Branch, including Chief of the Pahang Special Branch from May 25, 2018, before being appointed as the Bukit Aman Special Branch chief assistant director on Sept 6, 2021. Saifuddin Nasution in a statement today said Mohd Khalid's appointment received the consent of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia in accordance with Clauses (4) and (5) Article 140 of the Federal Constitution, upon the advice of the Prime Minister and the recommendation of the Police Force Commission. According to him, the contract appointment is for two years, starting from June 23 this year until June 22, 2027. He said Mohd Khalid was a highly experienced officer in the field of intelligence and security since he began serving in the force on April 5, 1987, when he was assigned to the Special Branch at the Bukit Aman police headquarters, after completing the General Police Training in the same year.
