A 30 year old man has been arrested at the scene, though police have yet to confirm the exact number of fatalities and injuries. Witnesses reported seeing upwards of 20 casualties after a black SUV drove into the crowd near East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street at around 8pm local time. Footage shared on social media showed debris and injured festivalgoers strewn across a long stretch of road. Photographs from the scene revealed a black SUV with a crumpled front end.
Festival meant to celebrate Filipino heritage
The tragedy unfolded during 'Lapu Lapu Day', a celebration of Filipino culture that honours Datu Lapu Lapu, a national hero who defeated Spanish forces led by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. Organisers of the event posted on Instagram: 'We are still finding the words to express the deep heartbreak brought on by this senseless tragedy. We are devastated for the families and victims.' Earlier in the day, the festival had been a scene of joyous celebration, with games and performances bringing the community together.
Prime Minister and Mayor express condolences
Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was 'devastated' by the incident, offering his 'deepest condolences to the loved ones of those killed and injured, to the Filipino Canadian community, and to everyone in Vancouver.' He also thanked first responders for their swift action. Vancouver Mayor Ken Lim expressed his shock, saying: 'Our thoughts are with all those affected and with Vancouver's Filipino community during this incredibly difficult time.'
Driver believed to have mental health issues
According to early reports, the suspect appears to have been suffering from mental health issues. The driver allegedly attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by police officers. Thousands were believed to be in attendance at the festival when the tragedy struck. Police are continuing to investigate and have not ruled out any possibilities at this early stage.
The incident comes just two days before Canadians are due to head to the polls for parliamentary elections.

Colombian senator Uribe fighting for life after shooting
BOGOTA: Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe, a potential presidential contender, was fighting for his life in hospital after being shot during a campaign event in Bogota on Saturday, according to his wife and government and party authorities. The Colombian Attorney General's Office said in a statement that "a minor under 15 years of age was arrested carrying a Glock pistol-type firearm (9mm)", and President Gustavo Petro ordered an investigation into who had ordered the attack. The 39-year-old senator, a member of the opposition conservative Democratic Center party, was shot during a 2026 presidential campaign event in a public park in the Fontibon neighbourhood in the capital on Saturday, according to a party statement condemning the attack. The party said in a statement that "armed subjects shot him from behind" and described the attack as serious, but did not disclose further details on Uribe's condition. Videos on social media showed a man, identified as Uribe, being tended to after the shooting. He appeared to be bleeding from his head. Uribe's wife Maria Claudia Tarazona wrote on her husband's account on X that he was "fighting for his life". People gathered outside the Santa Fe Foundation hospital where Uribe was being treated, some staged candlelight vigils and prayed, while others carried Colombian flags. Spain's government and that of neighbouring Venezuela issued statements on Sunday criticising the attack. "The Government of Spain strongly condemns the assassination attempt against Colombian senator and presidential pre-candidate Miguel Uribe, to whom it extends its solidarity and wishes for a speedy recovery," the Spanish Foreign Ministry posted on social media site X. Colombia's Defence Minister Pedro Sanchez said a suspect had been arrested after the shooting and that authorities were investigating whether others were involved. Sanchez said he had visited the hospital where Uribe was being treated. The government is offering some $730,000 as a reward for information in the case. Colombia's presidency issued a statement saying the government "categorically and forcefully" rejected the violent attack, and called for a thorough investigation into the events. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement that the U.S. "condemns in the strongest possible terms the attempted assassination" of Uribe, blaming Petro's "inflammatory rhetoric" for the violence. — Reuters

Tens of thousands join protest in Madrid
MADRID: Tens of thousands of people rallied on Sunday in an opposition-organised demonstration in Madrid accusing the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez of corruption. Protesters, many waving red and yellow Spanish flags, massed in the Plaza de Espana, a large square in the centre of the Spanish capital and chanted "Pedro Sanchez, resign!". The Popular Party (PP) called the rally after leaked audio recordings allegedly documented a member of the Socialist party, Leire Diez, waging a smear campaign against a police unit that investigated graft allegations against Sanchez's wife, brother and his former right-hand man. Diez has denied the allegations, telling reporters that she was conducting research for a book and was not working on behalf of the party or Sanchez. She also resigned from Sanchez's Socialist party. PP leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo has accused the government of "mafia practices" over the affair, and said Sanchez is "at the centre" of multiple corruption scandals. — AFP

Pakistan TikTok star shot dead at home
Islamabad – Police in Islamabad on Tuesday were investigating the killing of 17-year-old Sana Yousaf after she was found shot dead in her home. The killing of the popular teenager, who had more than a million followers across TikTok and Instagram, has raised renewed concerns over the safety of online personalities in Pakistan, particularly young women. Police were said to have filed a case against an unidentified suspect after a complaint by Yousaf's mother. 'The murder occurred within the victim's residence and seems to have been carried out by someone she was acquainted with,' Station House Officer Malik Asif from the Sumbal Police Station confirmed to DW. 'The suspect was a familiar guest, indicating a personal relationship between them,' said Asif. The news website Dawn cited early police information that a man entered the family's home at around 5pm on Monday and shot Sana twice in the chest. She was rushed to the hospital but died from her injuries. The suspect was said to have fled the scene and remains to be publicly identified. The mother said the suspect had a 'smart appearance, moderate physique and height,' and was dressed in a black shirt and pants. She said that both she and her sister-in-law, who was visiting, had witnessed the incident and would be able to identify the suspect in person. Her mother added that her 15-year-old son was not present at the house as he had gone to their native village while her sister-in-law was visiting them for a few days. Yousaf was widely known on social media for her short videos and lifestyle content. She had nearly 800,000 followers on TikTok and close to 500,000 on Instagram. She gained popularity for content about culture, women's rights, and youth empowerment. Her videos often featured humorous reels, inspirational messages, and cultural insights that resonated with with her young audience. After her death, tributes appeared on social media platforms with the hashtag #JusticeForSanaYousaf trending and fans and activists demanding a thorough investigation. The news comes amid growing conversations about the safety of women, particularly those in the public eye, and the challenges faced by female content creators in the country. More than 54 million people use TikTok in Pakistan, where authorities have repeatedly blocked the app over content concerns. It was banned four times in 2021 alone. The platform is currently accessible, operating under strict moderation and complying with takedown requests. DW
