Tinley Park, Park District pair up after spat on Fourth of July fireworks

Yahoo27-05-2025

After a two-year separation that saw Tinley Park hold its own July 4 fireworks shows, the village and Park District are collaborating this year on an Independence Day event.
It will be held at the Park District's McCarthy Park, which had long been the site of the Park District's Fourth of July event and fireworks show until 2023.
The last two years, Tinley Park had its own show at the 80th Avenue Metra commuter train station.
There has been friction between the village and Park District over control of the former Tinley Park Mental Health Center, which the Park District bought from the state last year for $1 and has plans to redevelop for recreational uses.
The village had also sought to acquire the 280-acre property, northwest of Harlem Avenue and 183rd Street, with plans to develop it for property and sale tax generating entertainment uses.
The Village Board at a recent meeting approved a contract worth $50,000 for the upcoming fireworks show.
The joint Independence Day event will take place from 4 to 10 p.m. on July 4 at McCarthy Park,16801 S. 80th Ave.
The village said music by Five Guys Named Moe will start the day at 4 p.m. and food and beverages will be for sale from local vendors.
Bingo, inflatables for kids, a magic show, gun salute and flag-raising ceremony as well as a 7 p.m. concert by Spoken Four, are part of the day's activities.
The fireworks show set to patriotic music is set for 9:30 p.m.
'We're excited to be collaborating with the Park District to bring Tinley Park's iconic fireworks show back to McCarthy Park,' Tinley Park Mayor Michael Glotz said in a news release.
'We are thrilled to restore our annual fireworks show at McCarthy Park this July 4th,' Park Board President Lisa O'Donovan said in the release. 'This celebration has been a highlight of the summer in Tinley Park for over 40 years.'
Tinley Park police Chief Tom Tilton said his officers are preparing for the event.
'We're utilizing new technologies and new techniques to provide a safe Fourth of July experience for everyone,' Tilton said in the news release. 'Residents can rest easy knowing we're taking every precaution.'
In early 2023, Tinley Park opted to hold its own fireworks show, prompting the Park District to cancel the Independence Day event it had held at McCarthy Park.
The village again, last year, held its own fireworks show at the 80th Avenue Metra station in conjunction with Ribfest.
In 2023, Park Board members said the district was being retaliated against for its interest in the former mental health center.
The Illinois General Assembly had cleared, and Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed, legislation that year clearing the path for the Park District to acquire the site.
The state also earmarked $15 million for the Park District to use to clean up environmental problems and demolish buildings on the property.
The Park District said in early 2023 it was denied a permit to hold its annual Running O' the Green 8k race March 5 of that year, the same day as the village's Irish Parade. The district said it had for many years held the race on the same day as the village parade but the race that year was rescheduled.
The Park District also said it had to find other sources of fuel for district vehicles and de-icing salt for Park District properties after Tinley Park cut off long-standing supply agreements for both products.
Park Board members, in a letter early in 2023 to village officials, said 'it is simply not feasible to work with you on any event when the village is engaged in this kind of behavior.'
The district, in its letter, said the obstacles that had been thrown up were 'retaliation and punishment' for the district.

Crude Prices Slip as US Holds Back from Iran Attack

July WTI crude oil (CLN25) Friday closed down -0.21 (-0.28%), and July RBOB gasoline (RBN25) closed up +0.0209 (+0.91%). Crude oil and gasoline prices settled mixed on Friday, with gasoline posting a 10-1/4 month high. Friday's weaker dollar was bullish for energy prices. SoftBank's Masayoshi Son Unveils $1 Trillion AI Hub Proposal for U.S. to Rival China Is a Summer Rally on the Horizon in the U.S. Natural Gas Futures Market? Crude Prices Pressured on Reduced Concern About an Imminent US Strike on Iran Our exclusive Barchart Brief newsletter is your FREE midday guide to what's moving stocks, sectors, and investor sentiment - delivered right when you need the info most. Subscribe today! Crude oil prices turned lower Friday after President Trump said he would wait two weeks to give diplomacy a chance before deciding if the US should attack Iran. Crude prices were also pressured on signs that Iran is ready to negotiate after Reuters reported that the Iranian government is ready to discuss limitations on uranium enrichment. Gasoline prices garnered support Friday after the American Automobile Association (AAA) projected that a record 61.6 million people would travel by car this Fourth of July holiday (June 28 to July 6), up +2.2% from last year and a sign of stronger gasoline demand. So far, Iran has not impeded ship movement through the vital Strait of Hormuz, which handles about 20% of the world's daily crude shipments. However, a French naval liaison group stated that navigational signals from over 1,000 vessels a day moving through the Strait had been disrupted due to "extreme jamming" of signals from the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas, which led to a collision of two tankers on Tuesday near the Strait of Hormuz. Oil prices continue to be undercut by tariff concerns after President Trump said last Wednesday that he intends to send letters to dozens of US trading partners within one to two weeks, setting unilateral tariffs ahead of the July 9 deadline that came with his 90-day pause. A decline in crude oil held worldwide on tankers is bullish for oil prices. Vortexa reported Monday that crude oil stored on tankers that have been stationary for at least seven days fell by -7.2% w/w to 73.97 million bbl in the week ended June 13. Concern about a global oil glut is negative for crude prices. On May 31, OPEC+ agreed to a 411,000 bpd crude production hike for July after raising output by the same amount for June. Saudi Arabia has signaled that additional similar-sized increases in crude output could follow, which is viewed as a strategy to reduce oil prices and punish overproducing OPEC+ members, such as Kazakhstan and Iraq. OPEC+ is boosting output to reverse the 2-year-long production cut, gradually restoring a total of 2.2 million bpd of production. OPEC+ had previously planned to restore production between January and late 2025, but now that production cut won't be fully restored until September 2026. OPEC May crude production rose +200,000 bpd to 27.54 million bpd. Wednesday's EIA report showed that (1) US crude oil inventories as of June 13 were -10.2% below the seasonal 5-year average, (2) gasoline inventories were -1.8% below the seasonal 5-year average, and (3) distillate inventories were -16.7% below the 5-year seasonal average. US crude oil production in the week ending June 14 was unchanged w/w at 13.431 million bpd, modestly below the record high of 13.631 million bpd from the week of December 6. Baker Hughes reported Friday that active US oil rigs in the week ending June 20 fell by -1 to a 3-3/4 year low of 438 rigs. Over the past 2-1/2 years, the number of US oil rigs has fallen from the 5-1/4 year high of 627 rigs posted in December 2022. NJ town adds fences, drones, more police for July 4 fireworks after "recent disturbances" involving juveniles

Citing "troubling trends" related to groups of unsupervised young people at public events, Maple Shade, New Jersey, is planning extra security for its Independence Day fireworks celebration next Saturday — including an increased police presence, surveillance cameras and drones, and fencing around the event area. Maple Shade Police Chief Christopher Fletcher sent a letter to the Burlington County community on Friday explaining the changes for the 2025 celebration. The town is set to have a parade at noon on June 28, followed by fireworks at dusk at Maple Shade High School. "The area surrounding Maple Shade High School will be fenced, with clearly marked entry points for all guests. Backpacks and face coverings will not be permitted inside the fenced area, as these items have been commonly used in recent disturbances throughout the region," Fletcher said. "These preparations are based on troubling trends we've seen locally (including Maple Shade) and across New Jersey, where large groups of unsupervised juveniles have disrupted public events, often arriving via rideshare services and then engaging in disorderly or violent behavior. These incidents have made event safety more complex, with many towns opting to cancel their events entirely," Fletcher added. He said Maple Shade would not be canceling its "long-standing, beloved traditions" and will coordinate across departments to have a rapid response to any issues that may arise. Fletcher acknowledged that the heightened security may cause delays or inconveniences for attendees, but said the measures are in place for safety. The full letter is available on the Maple Shade township website and Facebook page. Security changes come weeks after New Jersey passes brawl bill Maple Shade's announced security changes come only a few weeks after the passage of a bill aimed at stopping one type of gathering of unruly juveniles: public brawls. The bill upgraded penalties for disorderly conduct in some circumstances and said intentionally starting a public brawl would be a disorderly persons violation. The bill stemmed from chaos and hundreds of fights that overtook Gloucester Township Day in June 2024. Gloucester Township Day was canceled this year after law enforcement officers discovered threats of violent activity were being shared on social media.
