Canal rejuvenation under IURWTS likely to ease waterlogging in Kochi

The State government's move to accord in-principle approval for the implementation of the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB)-funded Integrated Urban Regeneration and Water Transport System (IURWTS) will benefit six canals in Kochi and is expected to bring a lasting solution to the perennial issue of waterlogging faced by the city.
Edappally canal, Perandoor canal, Chilavannoor canal, Thevara canal, Market canal, and Konthuruthy canal will be rejuvenated under the project. Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is the special purpose vehicle for the project. While administrative sanction was accorded for an estimated ₹1,528.27 crore initially, it was revised to ₹3,716.10 crore based on a revised proposal submitted by the KMRL project director. The KIIFB will carry out a comprehensive evaluation of the estimate proposal of KMRL.
The National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) has issued wildlife clearance for the IURWTS, subject to the condition that the sub-canal passing through the Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary shall be taken up for cleaning during the implementation of the project. Accordingly, the government order gave in-principle approval for including the cleaning of the sub-canal passing through the sanctuary as well in the project.
'The implementation of the project will put an end to Kochi's perennial problems of waterlogging, mosquito menace, and other issues. It will also alter the face of the city in terms of infrastructure, industry, and tourism potential,' said Mayor M. Anilkumar.
According to the revised estimates, ₹532.09 crore has been allocated for canal-oriented development, ₹41.33 crore for the canal-oriented development of Konthuruthy canal, ₹5 crore for the development of Mangalavanam canal, ₹1,386.68 crore for sewage treatment plants and sewer network, and ₹37.05 crore for sanitation and solid waste management. A significant allocation of ₹1,235.70 crore has been made towards land acquisition, which is critical to the project.
Further allocation of ₹28.27 crore has been made for rehabilitation and resettlement, ₹36.47 crore for utility shifting, ₹41.94 crore for specialised works and survey, ₹353.81 crore for establishment charges related to land acquisition, and ₹17.76 crore for project expenses towards capitalisation.

Minister hands over compensation for Phase II of Pazhakutty–Mangalapuram Road project

Thiruvananthapuram : Food and civil supplies minister GR Anil on Saturday handed over the compensation for Phase II of the Pazhakutty–Mangalapuram Road project to district collector Anu Kumari. At a formal event held in collectorate conference hall, the minister handed over a cheque of Rs 44.64 crore. The 20km-long and 13m-wide Pazhakutty–Mangalapuram Road is being developed with a total investment of Rs 170 crore from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). The compensation covers land acquired for the second reach of the project, stretching from Mukkam Palamoodu to Pothencode. This phase involves the acquisition of 1 acre and 70 cents from 400 families. Additionally, eight individuals eligible under the resettlement package will receive Rs 9.5 lakh each. The minister directed officials to expedite proceedings and complete compensation disbursement by Sept so that the tendering process can be initiated without delay. In the first reach of the project, 73.4 cent was acquired from 203 families, for which Rs 5.61 crore was disbursed as compensation. The third reach, from Pothencode to Mangalapuram, involved acquiring 66 cent from 247 families, with Rs 9.46 crore already distributed as compensation. An amount of Rs 47.83 crore has been sanctioned for the construction work, which is currently nearing completion and is expected to be finalised by the end of July. The minister also instructed officials to take necessary steps to ease travel difficulties faced by the public during the construction phase. The review meeting was attended by deputy collector Muhammad Safeer and representatives from various departments.

KMRL submits feasibility study report for Water Metro project in Mumbai

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is in the process of expanding its footprint nationwide, with its consultancy division submitting a comprehensive feasibility study report to implement a Water Metro ferry system in Mumbai to Nitish Rane, the Ports and Fisheries Minister of Maharashtra. Modelled on the lines of the Kochi Water Metro project, the report would cover the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The proposed project envisions connecting various waterbodies including Vaitarna, Vasai, Manori, Thane, Panvel, and Karanja creeks, effectively covering the entire MMR. It outlines a 250-kilometre waterway network with 29 terminals and 10 routes, says a KMRL release. The feasibility study was presented at a high-level meeting chaired by Mr. Rane in Mumbai. The KMRL team was led by Chief General Manager Shaji P. Janardhanan, Senior Deputy General Manager Nishanth N. and Manager Arjun Krishna K.

Renovated Mattancherry town hall opened to public

The Mattancherry Nehru Memorial Town Hall, renovated at an investment of around ₹3.50 crore, has been opened to the public, Mayor M. Anilkumar has said. 'Funds from the Kochi Corporation Plan fund, their own fund, and the corporate social responsibility fund of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) have been used to renovate the town hall with 27, built-up space,' he said. The commissioning of the renovated town hall, scheduled for April, was postponed following Pope Francis' death. The Mattancherry town hall is one of the most popular spots for common people in the area, and is older than the town hall in Ernakulam. 'The town hall has been renovated by making complete use of its space. Two dining halls are also part of the town hall. BPCL made available ₹88 lakh as CSR fund for the project. The gate and the entry arch have been renovated in keeping with the town hall's legacy and beauty. Lighting and flooring have been properly taken care of,' said Mr. Anilkumar. 'The stage has been redesigned as part of the renovation. Backdrop to the stage and other facilities have also been arranged,' he added. The Mattancherry town hall boasts a 35, parking facility. 'The sound system has been improved, considering that the town hall frequently hosts various cultural programmes.' 'The Kochi Corporation is hopeful that the public will make good use of the town hall,' said Mr. Anilkumar. The town hall had fallen into disrepair after it was used to accommodate COVID-19 patients.
