Express Tribune18-05-2025

Multan Sultans have won the toss and elected to bat first against Quetta Gladiators in the 28th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 10 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
Multan Sultans hold a slight edge in their head-to-head record, having won nine matches compared to five victories for Quetta Gladiators.
The hustle and bustle of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) returned on Friday to the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium with a high-scoring clash between Peshawar Zalmi and Karachi Kings, culminating in a 23-run victory for the Kings.
The PSL-10 had earlier been brought to a grinding halt after India launched a drone attack outside the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Initially, it was decided to shift the remainder of the tournament to the UAE.
However, following a de-escalation between Pakistan and India, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chose to bring the action back home and complete the event on native soil.
On Friday, the PCB also officially dedicated the ongoing Pakistan Super League to the valiant Armed Forces of Pakistan, acknowledging their unwavering sacrifices and steadfast commitment to safeguarding the nation.
"We proudly dedicate the Pakistan Super League to our brave Armed Forces who continue to safeguard the nation's integrity with courage and commitment," the PCB said in a statement.
According to the PCB, Friday's PSL matches and ceremonies were held in honour of the Pakistan Army, while Saturday would be dedicated to the Pakistan Navy, and Monday to the Pakistan Air Force.
In the high-scoring encounter, Karachi Kings posted 237 runs, and Peshawar Zalmi, despite a spirited chase, fell short with 214, giving the Kings a 23-run win and securing their spot in the playoffs.
Multan Sultans Playing XI: Mohammad Rizwan (captain & wicketkeeper), Jahanzeib Sultan, Tayyab Tahir, Humayon Altaf, Yasir Khan, Aamer Azmat, Shahid Aziz, Peter Hatzoglou, Dilshan Madushanka, Mohammad Hasnain, Ubaid Shah.

According to the cricket board, the players participated in several fitness and fielding sessions from 6 am to 8 am, while skill-based sessions (net practice) were held from 2:30 pm to 6:30 pm at the Lahore City Cricket Association (LCCA) Ground and NCA from Monday to Thursday. Notably, a total of 47 players had been shortlisted to participate in the camp in three groups from June 16 to July 5 and following the conclusion of the first phase earlier today, the PCB has also announced the names of 15 players, set to partake in the second phase from June 23 to 28. Director High-Performance Aqib Javed, in a statement released by the PCB, had shared that the players were invited to the camp after 'detailed discussions' with newly-appointed white-ball head coach Mike Hesson. Javed said that the camp would provide the 47 players with an opportunity to fine-tune their skills during a brief pause from competitive cricket. "We have invited 47 players to the 20-day skills camp at the National Cricket Academy following detailed discussions with white-ball head coach Mike Hesson," said Javed. "This is an invaluable opportunity for the players to take a brief pause from competitive cricket and focus on enhancing their fitness and refining key aspects of their game. "With a busy international calendar ahead, this window allows us to provide targeted support to the players, so they can return better prepared for the challenges to come. "There is a complete alignment between the coaching staff at the National Cricket Academy and the national men's team. We are working in close coordination to ensure that every initiative contributes to the long-term progress of Pakistan cricket." Abdullah's County debut Pakistani cricketer Abdullah Shafique's departure to England for the County Championship has been delayed, Yorkshire County Cricket Club confirmed on Saturday. Abdullah was set to represent Yorkshire in two red-ball matches and four Vitality Blast T20 games during his stint with the club. However, according to a statement issued by Yorkshire on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, a delay in the visa process means Abdullah will not be able to arrive as originally scheduled and will miss the upcoming Championship match against Nottinghamshire. The club has not yet confirmed a revised arrival date for the Pakistani batter. "Anthony McGrath revealed this evening that Pakistan overseas batter Abdullah Shafique has been the subject of a visa delay and will miss this weekend's Championship match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge," the club said. Meanwhile, the Yorkshire County Cricket Club has confirmed the signing of Pakistan international Abdullah Shafique as an overseas player for the ongoing season. The top-order batter is set to join the Yorkshire squad next week and will be available for selection in the upcoming two Rothesay County Championship matches against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge and against Surrey at York Shafique will also remain with the team for the remainder of the Vitality Blast group stage, featuring in the final four fixtures of the campaign.

Pakistan set for Bangladesh T20I tour in July: report

The Pakistan men's cricket team will tour Bangladesh in July for a three-match T20I series, with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) expected to officially confirm the schedule next week, according to reports. The BCB has reportedly shared a proposed itinerary with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), outlining fixtures on 20, 22 and 24 July. All matches are set to be held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka. This bilateral series falls outside the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Future Tours Programme (FTP) and was arranged following high-level discussions between PCB and BCB officials on the sidelines of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, jointly hosted by Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates. Bangladesh, currently led by Litton Das, recently completed a reciprocal tour of Pakistan where they were swept 3–0 in a T20I series. That campaign marked the first assignment for Pakistan's new white-ball head coach Mike Hesson and T20I skipper Salman Ali Agha. Following their matches in Bangladesh, Pakistan will travel to the West Indies for another white-ball assignment. A three-match T20I series is scheduled to begin on 31 July in the United States. Although an ODI leg is tentatively planned, reports suggest that the PCB and Cricket West Indies (CWI) are in talks to replace it with additional T20Is. The change would allow both teams to focus on upcoming T20 tournaments, including the 2025 ACC Men's Asia Cup and the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. As it stands, the T20Is against the West Indies are scheduled for 31 July, 2 August and 3 August. The proposed ODI series is slated to be held at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad on 8, 10 and 12 August, pending final confirmation. Further details on both tours, including any changes to the fixture list, are expected in the coming weeks.

Jason Gillespie claims he still hasn't received full payment from PCB

Former Pakistan head coach Jason Gillespie has confirmed he is still waiting for outstanding payments from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), months after stepping down from his role in December 2024. Speaking in a recent interview, Gillespie acknowledged that the matter remains unresolved, stating only: 'It's ongoing. Let's just leave it at that.' The former Australian international had earlier made the issue public, and his latest remarks suggest the dispute could escalate further. The PCB, meanwhile, maintains that a breach of contract is the reason for the delayed payment. Gillespie's short tenure came during a significant structural shake-up within Pakistan cricket, which also saw Gary Kirsten appointed to oversee white-ball squads. However, the dual-coach model soon collapsed. Gillespie exited just before the scheduled Test series against South Africa, reportedly frustrated by internal board decisions. The situation highlights the challenges that can arise in managing international coaching appointments and the complexities of cross-border contractual agreements. Earlier this year, Gillespie announced he would take legal action against the PCB over non-payment. While the specifics of the case remain private, the matter adds a layer of attention to how cricketing bodies navigate the administrative side of high-profile appointments. For Gillespie, one of Australia's most respected coaching figures, the wait for compensation and closure continues.
