Nearly half of Wayanad's tourism constructions illegal: Government study

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Nearly half of all tourism-related constructions in Wayanad are operating without a valid licence, according to a study by the local self-government department. The comprehensive report, released last week on sustainable and responsible tourism, has uncovered widespread regulatory violations, rampant illegal operations, and blatant environmental disregard affecting the district's tourism sector. The study by the planning wing of the department revealed that nearly half of all tourism establishments in Wayanad -- including resorts, homestays, and serviced villas -- are operating illegally. Only 56% of these properties hold the mandatory LSGD licence, a mere 16% are registered under GST, and just 53% have secured consent from the Pollution Control Board (PCB) -- a critical requirement for ensuring environmental compliance and responsible operations. One of the most alarming revelations is the unchecked operation of tourism properties within environmentally sensitive and hazardous zones. Numerous establishments have been built or are under construction in designated High Hazard Zones (HHZ) or within 500-metre buffer zones identified for landslide and flood vulnerability. These zones are particularly fragile given Wayanad's history of tragic landslides and frequent human-wildlife conflicts. Yet, many tent stays and resorts in these regions lack even basic safety measures such as fencing or emergency response infrastructure. Meanwhile, Wayanad district panchayat president Samshad Marakkar has called for crackdown on illegal tourist establishments. Expressing concern over the growing number of tourist accidents linked to unauthorised resorts and accommodations, he said that many of these facilities operate without the knowledge of local bodies. 'Several of these resorts are located in remote, inaccessible areas with poor or no road connectivity. In emergencies, rescue operations become extremely difficult,' he said. He added that the study would serve as a baseline document and that the district panchayat has recommended the formation of special inspection squads under each local body to identify, inspect, and take corrective action against illegal constructions.

Pakistan set for Bangladesh T20I tour in July: report

The Pakistan men's cricket team will tour Bangladesh in July for a three-match T20I series, with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) expected to officially confirm the schedule next week, according to reports. The BCB has reportedly shared a proposed itinerary with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), outlining fixtures on 20, 22 and 24 July. All matches are set to be held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka. This bilateral series falls outside the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Future Tours Programme (FTP) and was arranged following high-level discussions between PCB and BCB officials on the sidelines of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, jointly hosted by Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates. Bangladesh, currently led by Litton Das, recently completed a reciprocal tour of Pakistan where they were swept 3–0 in a T20I series. That campaign marked the first assignment for Pakistan's new white-ball head coach Mike Hesson and T20I skipper Salman Ali Agha. Following their matches in Bangladesh, Pakistan will travel to the West Indies for another white-ball assignment. A three-match T20I series is scheduled to begin on 31 July in the United States. Although an ODI leg is tentatively planned, reports suggest that the PCB and Cricket West Indies (CWI) are in talks to replace it with additional T20Is. The change would allow both teams to focus on upcoming T20 tournaments, including the 2025 ACC Men's Asia Cup and the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. As it stands, the T20Is against the West Indies are scheduled for 31 July, 2 August and 3 August. The proposed ODI series is slated to be held at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad on 8, 10 and 12 August, pending final confirmation. Further details on both tours, including any changes to the fixture list, are expected in the coming weeks.

Enhanced facilities to plug gaps in non-biodegradable waste management in Ernakulam

Ernakulam has plugged gaps in the management of non-biodegradable waste by setting up facilities that can manage up to 240 metric tonnes daily, according to official estimates. The total generation of non-biodegradable waste in the district is 239 metric tonnes per day. Local bodies in the district have facilities that can process a total of about 150 metric tonnes. Clean Kerala Company Limited has a godown facility to take care of 78 metric tonnes of waste daily, while private agencies involved in waste management are processing 78 metric tonnes per day, according to the monthly progress report for March, 2025, submitted by the Kerala State Pollution Control Board (PCB) before the Ministry of Jal Shakthi. The Board submitted the updated status report on May 31, 2025, in connection with the case related to polluted river stretches in the country considered by the National Green Tribunal. The report said that local bodies in the State had developed comprehensive plans for the movement of vehicles to collect waste from households and transport it to processing facilities. The implementation of the plans is being monitored at the State and district levels through the 'Harithamithram' application aimed at ensuring efficient waste collection. To enhance monitoring, all waste transporting vehicles are required to have GPS tracking, and the PCB has set up a web portal for real-time monitoring of waste-carrying vehicles, both within and across the State borders. The report said that efforts were on to equip material collection facilities and resource recovery facilities with the necessary tools for effective waste management, which included conveyor belts and baling machines. It suggested that the reject waste generated could be converted into refuse-derived fuel to enable smooth transportation and reduce the dependence on landfills.
