BJP's Sukanta Majumdar Writes To Amit Shah Flagging 'Threat To Life' Over Attack
Last Updated:
Sukanta Majumdar said Diamond Harbour Police DSP Rahul Goswami was physically present at the spot but "failed to take any preventive or protective action"
Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar on Friday wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging a 'grave breach of privilege" and a 'threat to life" following an alleged attack on his convoy in the Budge Budge area of West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district a day earlier.
Majumdar, who is also the BJP's West Bengal unit president, was visiting the area on Thursday to meet party workers who were reportedly injured after being attacked outside the Budge Budge-1 BDO office on Wednesday.
His visit triggered tensions in the area, where TMC supporters allegedly surrounded his convoy, raised slogans, and pelted it with stones.
In a letter written to the Speaker under Rule 222 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha, Majumdar, the Balurghat MP, described the attack as a serious threat not only to his life but also to the safety of those accompanying him.
In another letter written to Shah on Friday evening, Majumdar drew his attention to the 'highly alarming and deteriorating law and order situation in West Bengal, specifically in Diamond Harbour area which has witnessed continuous political violence targetting elected representatives and party workers." 'On June 19, during my official visit to meet victims of earlier assaults and assess the situation on ground, my convoy was attacked by a violent mob reportedly comprising TMC workers, stones were pelted, vehicles were vandalised and several individuals accompanying me sustained injuries… The attack posed a serious threat to my life and those in my entourage," Majumdar wrote in the letter to Shah.
'The attack posed a direct and serious threat to my life and the lives of those present," the letter said.
'This constitutes not only a collapse of law and order but also a direct assault on the dignity and security of a Union minister and an MP," he added.
Majumdar said Diamond Harbour Police District Superintendent of Police Rahul Goswami was physically present at the spot but 'failed to take any preventive or protective action," which the minister termed as 'wilful negligence" and 'dereliction of duty." He also noted that the SDPO of Diamond Harbour was absent from the scene despite prior intimation of his scheduled visit.
'The situation was brought under control only due to the timely intervention of CISF personnel assigned to me as I have Z category security cover provided by the Union government," Majumdar wrote.
'As a consequence, I have submitted a notice of Breach of Privilege under Rule 222 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha to the Speaker," he informed Shah.
Majumdar said while on his way to visit Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee's house in Kolkata to offer floral tributes on Paschim Banga Divas he was planning to visit the ailing mother of London-based doctor Rajatshubhra Bandyopadhyay but personnel from West Bengal police attempted to prevent him from proceeding.
'In light of the above, I earnestly request your urgent intervention to address the alarming law and order situation in West Bengal, particularly in politically sensitive regions like Diamond Harbour by initiating an immediate review of the prevailing conditions, deploying central paramilitary forces to restore peace and ensure the safety of elected representatives and ordering a prompt inquiry to hold accountable the concerned district officials whose dereliction of duty and inaction enabled such a grave security lapse," he said.
In his letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker, Majumdar called the incident at Budge Budge an 'assault on the dignity and privilege of a Member of Parliament", Majumdar urged the Speaker to treat the matter as contempt of the House and refer it to the Committee of Privileges for appropriate action.
'This incident not only endangered the life of a public representative but also constitutes a direct assault on the dignity and privilege of a Member of Parliament.
'Such acts of violence and inaction by state officials severely compromise the democratic functioning of our institutions and the constitutional rights granted to elected members of this House," the letter stated.
The BJP leader also took to social media to express his outrage.
'Yesterday in Budge Budge, Diamond Harbour, I was subjected to a brutal, orchestrated attack by TMC-backed criminal mobs, while the @WBPolice stood as mute, spineless spectators.
'The police not only failed to act during the violence, they also failed to take any preventive action, despite clear signs of escalating tension. Even when a Union Minister of State and sitting Member of Parliament was targeted, the state machinery looked the other way," Majumdar posted on X, attaching a copy of his letter to the Speaker.
'This is a grave breach of parliamentary privilege… a direct and dangerous assault on Indian democracy. Today, I have formally apprised Hon'ble Speaker Shri @ombirlakota ji of this shocking breakdown of law and order in West Bengal," he added.

Foremost priority is to ensure forest lease holders receive entitlements: Chhattisgarh CM
Even as joint security forces continue operations across several States to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah's resolve on a 'Naxal-Mukt Bharat' by March 2026, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said that his government's 'foremost priority is to ensure that every forest land lease holding family received their rightful entitlements'. An official told The Hindu that this flows from the government's thinking that 'there is a clear correlation between FRA (Forest Rights Act) enforcement and reduced Naxal activity'. The Forest Rights Act, 2006, recognises and vests forest rights with Scheduled Tribes and forest-dwelling communities. 'The approach is holistic, combining rights recognition, economic empowerment, and security measures to strengthen tribal self-governance and counter extremism,' the official said, adding, 'Reports from the ground indicate that in districts with robust FRA implementation, Naxal recruitment has dropped. Gram Sabhas now resolve many local disputes without Maoist interference, showcasing the positive impact of tribal self-governance.' In response to questions on FRA implementation in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled State, the Chief Minister told The Hindu that his government had streamlined the 'fauti naamantaran' — the process of transferring ownership of land after the death of the leaseholder as well, 'so that legal heirs face no hurdles'. 'By simplifying and streamlining the process of 'fauti naamantaran', we have made sure that after the demise of a lease holder, their legal heirs face no hurdles in claiming their rightful ownership,' Mr. Sai said. Also Read | Forest rights concerns could influence electoral results in nearly a third of constituencies, says study 'With their names now officially recorded, they not only become the lawful owners of the land but also gain easier access to various government schemes and benefits,' he said, adding that the streamlined process had 'provided forest rights holders with a new foundation of economic, social, and familial security'. 'It has boosted the confidence of our rural and tribal communities and strengthened their trust in the government,' the CM said. This thinking is also reflected in the State government's 2025 policy for the surrender and rehabilitation of Naxals and victims of violence, which has provisions to give land titles, financial aid, and livelihood assistance to surrendered Naxals and victims, the State government official further said. 'By recognising land and forest rights, the government has addressed long-standing tribal grievances, which Naxals previously exploited for recruitment. In conflict-prone areas such as Abujhmad, granting habitat rights has strengthened trust between tribal communities and the administration,' the official said. The State government has especially focused on granting community rights titles under the FRA, data showed, with officials adding that Chhattisgarh had been granted over 4,300 Community Forest Resource Rights (CFRR) titles in the past 1.5 years. Public data from FRA implementation further showed that while, as of 2018, individual rights titles under the FRA were more than twice the number of community titles granted, the dataset for the last one year showed community titles outnumbering individual titles. This comes in the backdrop of the Union government trying to give a fresh push to the implementation of the FRA across the country by funding the setting up of over 300 FRA cells to facilitate the law's implementation. This effort is the first time the Union government is setting up mechanisms to help in the implementation of the law, which was hitherto largely in the domain of State governments.

On Hyderabad Expressway, Drunk Man Rides Camel And Sleeps On It
Last Updated: A suspected drunk man riding a camel on Hyderabad's PV Narasimha Rao Expressway sparked panic among commuters. In a strange and dangerous incident, a visibly intoxicated man was seen riding a camel on Hyderabad's busy PV Narasimha Rao Expressway, startling and worrying commuters. The unusual scene was captured and shared on Instagram by Ikram Ullah Shah. He not only filmed the incident but also followed the man and helped manage the risky situation before any harm occurred. The video captured a shocking scene of the camel sprinting down the expressway, with the intoxicated rider barely holding onto the reins and swaying dangerously close to the edge of the road. As the situation grew more hazardous, Ikram Ullah Shah drove alongside the camel, shouting at the man to stop while also warning nearby drivers to maintain a safe distance. In a desperate attempt to control the situation, Shah splashed water from a bottle onto the rider, who eventually lost consciousness and slumped over, allowing the camel to continue running without a rider. After a tense and risky chase, Shah and his friend finally managed to catch the camel and bring it to a stop by tying it to a streetlight, all while the rider hung precariously from its back. When they attempted to assist him in getting down, the man was barely responsive and could be heard mumbling incoherently, showing clear signs of intoxication and confusion. Posted on June 15, the video has already crossed over 1 million views. As it circulated widely on social media, many users praised Shah and his friend as heroes for their courageous actions in preventing what could have been a serious accident on the crowded expressway. A user wrote, 'In a world where many choose to look away, this one person chose courage! Saved countless lives and prevented accidents! Humanity needs more people like you who act when it matters the most. Truly commendable." Another commented, 'You guys saved his life and major accidents, hats off. Nowadays, life is so unpredictable." 'Well done bhai. No Words. Good Job," a user on Instagram said. 'Good, he tried to save them both," another remarked. Their quick thinking and bravery turned a risky situation into a story of timely heroism.
