Amongst the Wolves review – drills and chills in Irish gangster thriller
Irish director Mark O'Connor's film is a two-for-one deal. It starts out as a serious well-researched drama about an army veteran with PTSD sleeping rough in Dublin, and ends in bloody revenge, with Aidan Gillen in ultraviolent mode and gangsters drilling holes into each other's kneecaps.
The movie is grounded by a rock solid performance from the film's co-writer Luke McQuillan as former soldier Danny, who loses his family and home after a tour in Afghanistan. There's a scene early on that feels horribly truthful about the day-to-day reality of being homeless: late one night, three lagered up youths humiliate Danny for a laugh – forcing him in front of the camera as they shove a coin into his hand. The shame on his face as they film him is harder to watch than the electric drills later that come later.
Flashbacks show us how Danny's family life fell apart. There was an accident involving his little boy when Danny was looking after him; so when he meets a teenager called Will (Daniel Fee) sleeping in woods, Danny's instinct is to protect him – a second chance to get it right, perhaps. There is nothing particularly new about this story, but McQuillan plays Danny with real care.
Here's where Gillen muscles in as a gang boss called Power, a man who takes a spider's pleasure in getting people exactly where he wants them. Teenager Will was dealing drugs for Power, until his mum flushed his stash down the loo. Now he's in trouble. Gillen plays Power with his trademark soft-spoken menace, but somehow it doesn't stick here, even with the added nastiness of his character having a sadistic habit of killing dogs. At times this is a film that doesn't feel like quite enough, at others it's a little bit too much.

First look at new £165million theme park opening in Spanish hotspot – five years after being abandoned
NEW plans have finally been revealed for the reopening of the much-loved Tívoli World amusement park in Spain. Located in Costa del Sol, Tívoli World closed back in 2020 due to financial constraints and the global Covid-19 pandemic. 3 But plans have been approved by authorities who met yesterday and will see if increase in size to include a large tourist complex with shops. First images of the site reveal that it could have a large wheel and a free-fall tower and that the shopping are will have brands like Domino's Pizza, Forster's Hollywood, Rodilla or La Tagliatella, according to Sur in English. These details will be confirmed at a later stage though. There is also expected to be two new hotels. However, the council has agreed that Tívoli will reopen before or alongside the complete complex. In total, the park is expected to cost over €200million (£165million) to redevelop and estimated to create around 1000 new jobs. As part of the agreement, Tivoli World will rehire previous employees - who over the past years have maintained and guarded the park whilst it has been closed to the public. Many former fans of the park took to social media to express their joy at the news. One user said: "It should be brought back bigger and more beautiful. Great." Another added: "Itching to go back to Tivoli." Kids can enter Diggerland for free with this trick Tívoli World was formerly loved for being a family entertainment hub, having originally opened in 1972. The first owner of the attraction - Dane Bent Olsen - dubbed the park as a "factory of illusions" according to Euro Weekly, with fireworks, a rollercoaster, a Chinese pagoda, a lake with boars and around 20 fountains that offered water, light and sound shows. The Mayor, Juan Antonio Lara commented that it was a historic step and that "we have no time to waste". "We're pulling out all the stops to fast-track the process," said Lara. 3 Tivoli World is around a half-an-hour drive from Malaga or about 40 minutes on the train. According to Experience UK, the park is anticipated to reopen in 2028. There are also a number of other great spots to explore surrounding the park including stunning sandy beaches such as Playa de los Álamos. Kate Cassidy has revealed the list of cosmetic procedures she has undergone over the past five years after sharing a natural throwback video. The girlfriend of the late Liam Payne, 26, took to Instagram on Thursday to share a series of throwback videos of herself from the age of 21 until today. Fans commented on her changing appearance and questioned what surgery she has had, prompting her to share share another video captioned 'transparency' where she detailed all her tweakments. Sharing a natural picture of herself aged 21, Kate said the only cosmetic procedure she had at the time was lip filler, before getting cheek and chin filler and Botox by the age of 22. However, Kate candidly admitted she then went 'overboard' and ended up with a 'frozen' face from undergoing too many filer enhancements, which she said aged her. 'When I turned 22 I went a little bit too overboard with the filler, I ended up getting cheek filler, chin filer, lip filler and a whole face of Botox,' she said. 'My face was pretty much frozen and it literally aged me so much, I probably look 40 in this, not a good look.' Kate then revealed that she got a nose job, sharing photographs of her side-on profile showing the difference in her face before and after the operation. The influencer, who dated singer Liam for two years before his tragic death, admitted she didn't 'need' a nose job but wanted one due to feeling self-conscious. She said: 'This is my nose before, I did not need a nose job I want to make that clear, it's just something I've always been self-conscious about and something that I really wanted for years.' Kate revealed she later got her cheek and chin filler removed before getting different amounts re-injected, while she did the same with her lip filler. Updating fans on her current appearance, she said she also currently has Botox as well as filler, but insisted she doesn't have 'much' though she didn't disclose further details. 'I did get my cheek filler removed and I got, I'd say, a half syringe put in on each side, I got a half syringe in my chin and probably a syringe and a half in my chin,' she shared. 'I get Botox, but not that much, I still have wrinkles and obviously nose job doesn't go away, that will be there for life. Kate also shared clips of herself aged 23 (left) and 25 (right) as she showed off her changing look over the years 'I ditched the eyelash extensions and grew them out myself, so that's all I've done to my face.' Kate has had a difficult few months after her boyfriend of two years, One Direction star Liam, tragically died late last year. Liam died aged 31 on October 16, 2024, after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and was found to have alcohol and cocaine in his system. Kate has been documenting her grief journey on social media and she shared never-before-seen intimate texts with Liam earlier this week. Marking eight months since his death, she shared a gallery of pictures of herself and Liam and told how she lives in a 'constant state' of missing her 'best friend', admitting she can't put her pain into words. One photograph showed Liam wearing a T-shirt with her name written on it and pictures of her face printed across it as she stood beside him smiling. The influencer also shared a screenshot of texts Liam had sent her on August 1 gushing over his love for her, just two months before his tragic death. The messages read: 'Shall we go -play tennis for an hour? I literally couldn't love you more if I tried and somehow I will tomorrow. I can't wait to see you.' (sic) In a caption, Kate candidly opened up about her grief as she emotionally said her life doesn't 'make sense' without Liam in it. She penned: 'Eight months ago today, I lost my best friend and someone I thought I had so much more time and life left to share with. 'Liam was the kind of person you'd start missing the moment you walked out the door. Even when leaving the house for a few hours, I'd find myself rushing home to be with him again out of excitement. 'Now facing the reality that I live in a constant state of missing you is something I still can't fully wrap my head around. 'Knowing I can't just come home and see you, hear your voice, or feel your hug, it's a type of pain I can't fully put into words. 'I can't seem to tell if life is flying by without you or moving so slow none of it fully makes sense. 'But I am trying to live my life as best I can for now and live it for you. I miss you more than words can say. Ending on their angel number 444, she added: 'One day, I'll see you again, and I'll have so much to tell you. So much to catch up on. I love you my angel❤️444.' Angels have been symbolic for Kate since Liam's passing, particularly the number 444, which she has since got tattooed on her hand. Kate also has a beaded phone charm with the number '444' and an 'L' laced through the thread in a tribute to Liam. Angel numbers are repeating sequences of digits, normally in sets of three or four, and they are believed to hold spiritual guidance. In numerology, 444 is a sign that the 'angels are with you' and are 'there to guide you step by step'. In the weeks after his death, she referenced the angel numbers as she shared that they had been planning to marry in the weeks leading up to his passing.
