GHMC General Council holds discussions on monsoon prep

Hyderabad: The GHMC General Council meeting on Wednesday held detailed discussions on monsoon preparedness and other basic amenities.
The 11th meeting was chaired by GHMC Mayor Gadwal Vijaylakshmi. During this meeting, the members voiced their outrage at the horrific attack on innocent individuals by terrorists in Pahalgam. The council members extended their heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims of this attack and held a two-minute moment of silence to pray for the peace of the souls who have departed.
GHMC Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi has called on both authorities and public representatives to collaborate effectively for the city's progress. Prior to the start of the meeting, the Mayor spoke at the council gathering and stated the Chief Minister has guaranteed that there will be ample funding available for infrastructure and welfare development within GHMC, and she expressed his appreciation for the support given to the development of Baldia through the allocation of funds.
The pre-monsoon sanitation initiative aims to clean all streets to prevent seasonal diseases. She stressed the program's large-scale implementation for city cleanliness and urged officials to work with local representatives, MLAs, MLCs, and MPs for its success. Zonal review meetings are addressing public concerns, and decisions have been made to resolve issues raised by corporators. The mayor confirmed that corporators will collaborate with officials on sanitation, de-silting, Nala development, and infrastructure improvements in various zones.
The aim is to identify new routes for the approximately 744.22 km of roads designated in CRMP-1 and to transfer the management of a total of 1142.54 km of roads to private agencies for the next five years (2025-2030), while seeking approval for a budget of Rs 3825 crore for this initiative.
Furthermore, the corporators from various parties claim that they made plans to remove the officials due to alleged irregularities in the tenders for vehicles intended for use in the monsoon relief efforts.
In the meeting, BRS corporators raised concerns about the arrest of Baba Fasiuddin, a Congress member from Borabanda, alleging his involvement in a suicide. They raised slogans and held placards demanding Fasiuddin's arrest.
Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi intervened and successfully calmed the upset corporators. She mentioned that a First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged and that the case is currently being investigated. 'The law will take its course, and if the BRS corporators have any additional evidence related to this issue, they are urged to present it to the investigating authorities,' she stated.
However, BJP corporators expressed their discontent with the council meeting. During the session, BJP corporators resolved to remove the Mayor over issues related to road maintenance, street lighting upkeep, sanitation, birth certificate processing, entomology, and the construction and upkeep of flood water canals.
Other issues discussed were the operation of HYDRA, the status of street lighting, the process for issuing birth and death certificates, the rainwater harvesting pits built by GHMC, the restoration of RTC bus stops, the absence of essential infrastructure in cemeteries, and the painting and beautification projects carried out on flyovers throughout the city.
The meeting was attended by MPs Eatala Rajender, Raghunandan Rao, MLCs Vijayashanti, Balmuri Venkat, Mirza Riaz ul Hassan Effendi, Mirza Rahmat Baig, Addanki Dayakar, MLAs Zulfiqar Ali, Majid Hussain, Kausar Moinuddin, Rajasekhar Reddy, Bandari Laxma Reddy, Commissioner R.V. Karnan, Additional Commissioners Sneha Shabarish, Venugopal, Venugopal Reddy, Pankaja, Subhadra,and others were present.

‘Youth from families who benefited from land reforms, welfare schemes are now swayed by Hindutva politics'

Youth belonging to second and third generation of families that benefited from the land reforms of the 1970s and other welfare schemes now embracing Hindutva ideology is among the factors responsible for the religious polarisation of communities in the coastal region, especially in Dakshina Kannada, according a legislator who was part of the KPCC's fact-finding committee that toured the region and looked into this issue. To counter Hindutva politics, Muslim youth too have been polarising the community on religious identity and the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has been sowing seeds of 'communal politics' by raising funds, actively mobilising and organising the youth, the legislator said. Interim report The KPCC committee, which visited Dakshina Kannada district and met people from all walks of life — from politicians to ordinary citizens — submitted its interim report to party State president and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Thursday. The legislator told The Hindu that a large section of the backward classes families in the district benefited from the land reforms introduced by the Congress government led by the late D. Devaraj Urs. The next generations of these families, both educated and uneducated, are 'intoxicated by the Hindutva ideology', he said. Hindutva groups have consolidated power by waging hate campaigns against minorities citing what they call historical incidents, the legislator said. 'Soft attitude' A 'soft attitude' towards Hindutva activists by government officials and the police force and the absence of credible Congress leadership in the region has given rise to communal tendencies, he said. 'The Muslims are asking us what have you (Congress) given to us and we are surprised,' the leader said. The BJP won seven of the eight Assembly constituencies in Dakshina Kannada district in the 2023 elections. The BJP also won the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi-Chikkamagaluru Lok Sabha seats. Noting a strong presence of religious-based identities among the people, the member said, 'It is difficult to find any prevalence of the secular ideas in the region.' Ways of mobilising Besides increased religious events these days among Hindu and Muslim communities, the member said Hindus have been mobilised and organised through temple renovation programmes, bhajana mandali events and holding functions such as seminars and talks by inviting well-known Hindutva leaders. The BJP leaders have indulged in 'negative' politics to counter the 'positive' developments raised by the Congress, the leader claimed. Mangaluru and the regions surrounding it have witnessed three back-to-back murders: the mob lynching of 38-year-old Ashraf from Kerala, the hacking to death of 30-year-old double murder accused Suhas Shetty, and the killing of 32-year-old Abdul Rahiman, general secretary of a local masjid committee. All these deaths ignited communal passions in the region. Following these crimes, the State government has set up a special action force in the sensitive districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Shivamogga.

After Delhi man flags use of his PAN, Aadhaar cards for fraud, two linked to GST racket arrested: Cops

When Sumit, a resident of Sagarpur in Southwest Delhi, recently applied for a Goods and Services Tax (GST) registration number using his PAN card, he was shocked to discover that two GST numbers had already been fraudulently issued in his name. These registrations, he later claimed in a police complaint, were done without his knowledge or consent, and the firms operating under the GST numbers were allegedly conducting large-scale business transactions. He also told police that a SIM card had also been issued using his Aadhaar card credentials. An investigation into the case on Friday led to the arrest of two men who were allegedly involved in a large-scale GST fraud. Identified as Inderpal (45), a lawyer, and Sandeep (27), the accused were allegedly found to be systematically generating fake GST numbers using forged documents and later utilising these firms to issue fraudulent GST bills and facilitating fraudulent tax settlements, said police. During the investigation into Sumit's complaint, the police obtained detailed information from the Goods and Services Tax Department, which confirmed that two firms were indeed registered using his PAN details. Physical verification at the registered addresses revealed that the firms were fake, prompting the officers to ramp up surveillance and technical tracking. Further probe into the case led to the identification of Sandeep, who was eventually apprehended from his hometown in Chulkana in Haryana's Panipat. Upon questioning, he allegedly revealed that he was employed by Inderpal, an advocate from Northeast Delhi's Burari, and that he had been working with him for the past seven years. According to his statement, the duo procured GST registrations using genuine identity documents, such as PAN cards, Aadhaar cards, SIM cards, and rent agreements, belonging to their unsuspecting victims. Once the firms were acquired, they would log into the GST portal, update the contact details, including mobile numbers and email addresses, and then use these accounts to issue counterfeit GST bills. 'Thereafter, based on the technical analysis, Inderpal was traced in Kairana in Shamli, Uttar Pradesh. He had absconded to Kairana after Sandeep's arrest. Inderpal was arrested in the case, and he was taken into police custody. During his sustained questioning, he disclosed that he used to procure GST firms from other associates located in Delhi for Rs 25,000-30,000 per firm. They also provided the login details and a SIM card. He also disclosed that the SIM cards were also provided by other members of the syndicate,' said DCP South West Amit Goel. The police recovered three smartphones, one laptop, and a pen drive from the possession of the accused, all of which were allegedly used in the execution of the fraud. These devices are now being forensically examined to trace the full extent of the operation and identify other members of the syndicate, said police. According to the police, Sandeep was allegedly responsible for operating the technical aspects of the fraudulent scheme, including the creation and uploading of fake bills. Inderpal, allegedly leveraging his professional status as a lawyer, handled procurement and coordination with outside associates. Their collaboration allegedly enabled them to run a seamless operation that posed a significant risk to the integrity of the GST system, said officers.

Based on the CARE Ratings Report, Mishra pointed out that Bihar ranks 17th out of 17 major states on social and economic development. He said that poor performance in education quality, maternal and infant mortality rates, employment generation, weak scores on women empowerment, infrastructure, per capita income, alarming fiscal indicators, including debt management, interest payment ratio, fiscal deficit, severe deficiencies in electricity access, railway density, healthcare services, and school teacher ratios. He also said that the weak judicial efficiency, e-governance, investment environment, and environmental metrics are also poor, including air quality and renewable energy adoption. 'Bihar is now behind even Rajasthan, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh — states it once competed with. The figures speak for themselves, and corruption and poor governance are to blame,' Mishra said. He alleged that the government's much-publicised development narrative is hollow and lacks substance on the ground. Mishra added that even the Union government data contradicts the NDA's claims of progress. 'Bihar is in deep crisis, socially, economically, and administratively. The only way out is a change in government and a policy revolution,' he concluded. This marks a major strategic move by the Congress to build a data-backed campaign against the NDA ahead of the Assembly elections. With just four months to go, the party appears poised to corner the ruling alliance on its development record, particularly using central and global institutional reports as ammunition.
