Pune ‘miracle tree' with holy water turns out to be leaking pipe, video goes viral

Hindustan Times10-06-2025

In yet another case of devotion crossing into superstition, a video from Pune has gone viral. It shows locals offering flowers, turmeric, and vermilion to a tree trunk, believing it was exuding holy water. However, a municipal inspection later revealed that the water was actually leaking from an underground pipeline.
The incident took place in Pimpri's Premlok Park, where residents began gathering outside Sahara Society after videos surfaced of people treating a Gulmohar tree as sacred. Believing that "miracle water" with 'healing powers' was flowing from the trunk, many began worshipping it with traditional offerings.
According to a report by Punekar News, the sudden outpouring of faith drew crowds, with locals convinced they were witnessing a divine event. However, when officials from the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) arrived, the truth came out.
"It's not a miracle. An old water pipeline runs beneath the tree. Due to a leak, water found an outlet through the hollow trunk," Deputy Engineer Pravin Dhumal told Punekar News.
Officials subsequently shut off the water supply and began repair work without removing the tree.
A video shared on X summarised the incident: 'In the area of Pimpri Chinchwad, citizens began offering garlands, flowers, turmeric, and vermilion to a tree, worshipping it after seeing water coming from it. Later, some sensible citizens informed the municipal corporation about this, and during the investigation, it was revealed that a water pipeline had burst beneath the tree."
The video has since sparked criticism and debate online, with many users expressing concern over growing superstition in urban areas.
"Superstition is increasing in urban areas more than in rural areas. What could be the reason?" one user asked.
"How can we progress as a nation if these kind of things still happen in 2025," said another.

Fadnavis inaugurates Santpeeth, major infrastructure projects in Pimpri-Chinchwad

The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation's (PCMC) newly developed Santpeeth — dedicated to promoting the teachings of revered saints like Sant Tukaram Maharaj and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj — will serve as a powerful medium to take their universal and timeless philosophy to the global stage, said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday. He was speaking at the inauguration and foundation-laying ceremony of several key development projects across the city. 'Sant literature is deeply rooted in our culture. But with the Santpeeth, PCMC has succeeded in presenting these teachings in a modern, structured and inclusive manner. The initiative will not only preserve our spiritual heritage but also inspire future generations across linguistic and geographical boundaries,' Fadnavis said. Located near Wadmukhwadi on the Pune-Alandi Palakhi Marg, the newly inaugurated Santpeeth houses an auditorium, art gallery and a magnificent sculpture depicting the legendary meeting between Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj and Sant Namdev Maharaj. The inauguration also saw the launch of several civic infrastructure projects, including roads, schools, sewage treatment plants, and bridges. Noting the city's rapid urban growth, the CM said Pimpri-Chinchwad was emerging as a hub of modern urban governance. 'Today's inaugurated projects — from STPs that will ensure not a single drop of untreated water enters the city's rivers, to advanced sports facilities and inclusive development initiatives — demonstrate PCMC's commitment to balanced growth,' he said. The Santpeeth also integrates academic learning with spiritual knowledge. 'Students here are taught the teachings of saints in four languages — Sanskrit, Marathi, Hindi and English — alongside the CBSE curriculum,' Fadnavis said. 'Through this, we ensure both cultural depth and academic rigour.' Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched two digital initiatives of the Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissionerate — 'Jyeshthanubandh', a dedicated mobile app for senior citizens, and 'Traffic Buddy', a WhatsApp-based grievance redressal system for traffic issues. 'These innovations reflect an empathetic approach to policing,' Fadnavis said. 'It's essential that senior citizens feel someone has their back — and this app delivers just that.' Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh welcomed the dignitaries and shared details of all the inaugurated and launched projects. 'Pimpri Chinchwad, situated between the sacred towns of Dehu and Alandi, has evolved from a cluster of villages into a smart city in a short span. With the Santpeeth, we aim to carry forward the timeless teachings of saints through a blend of tradition and technology. The newly unveiled sculpture and murals not only preserve the legacy of Sant Dnyaneshwar and Sant Namdev but also make it accessible and inspiring for future generations. Alongside this spiritual commitment, our civic projects — from green infrastructure and Olympic-level sports facilities to disability surveys — reflect our holistic, inclusive approach to urban development.' Additional Commissioner Pradip Jambhale Patil delivered the vote of thanks. The event was graced by MP Shrirang Barne, MLCs Srikant Bharatiya, Uma Khapre and Amit Gorkhe, and MLAs Mahesh Landge and Shankar Jagtap, along with Police Commissioner Vinay Kumar Choubey, and senior civic officials. Renowned scholar Dr Sadanand More was also present. MLA Mahesh Landge expressed pride in the establishment of the Santpeeth, stating that it would be a cultural milestone for the city.

83 lakh saplings to be planted, 20% fruit trees

: In an effort to make Sangam city greener, approximately 83 lakh saplings are set to be planted by various government departments this year. Around 20 percent of these will be fruit-bearing trees, including mango, jamun, and jackfruit. According to reports, the forest department will plant about 22.45 lakh saplings, while other government departments have been assigned a combined target of 50.69 lakh saplings. District forest officer Arvind Yadav said that a significant number of trees were cut during the Mahakumbh festival to make way for development works. To make up for this loss, saplings including fruit-bearing varieties will be planted across the district. The forest department has identified Shankargarh, Meja, and Koraon tehsils as the key areas for increasing green cover. These areas were chosen because they have large patches of vacant land. Efforts will focus on planting trees in dried-up ponds, barren land, and fields where trees have died. Neem, Peepal, and Gulmohar trees will be planted in most of these areas. From July onwards, several departments will begin planting trees according to their assigned targets. These include: Environment Department: 2.27 lakh Rural Development Department: 29.98 lakh Revenue Department: 2.51 lakh Panchayati Raj Department: 3.40 lakh Urban Development Department: 1.37 lakh Agriculture Department: 5.99 lakh Horticulture Department: 3.69 lakh Basic Education Department: 30,000 Secondary Education Department: 18,000 Higher Education Department: 24,000 Health Department: 12,000 Cooperative Department: 13,000 Industry Department: 8,000 Railways: 15,000 Transport Department: 1,800 Defence: 4,000 This large-scale plantation drive is part of the city's ongoing commitment to enhance its green spaces and improve the environment for its residents.

Students get a warm welcome as civic schools in Pimpri-Chinchwad open for the new academic year

As schools reopened for the new academic year on Monday, the first day of school turned into a day of celebration across all civic schools run by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) with civic officials and elected representatives personally welcoming students with flowers, educational kits, and words of encouragement. At the PM Shri PCMC Gyanjyoti Savitribai Phule Primary School in Mhetrewadi, municipal commissioner Shekhar Singh formally inaugurated the 2025-26 academic year. He interacted with students, distributed educational materials, and inaugurated an innovation lab at the school. Speaking on the occasion, Singh underlined the civic body's commitment to not only improving the quality of education but also focusing on students' emotional and social development through structured initiatives in the upcoming academic year. The commissioner also highlighted that schools have commenced the distribution of uniforms, books, and learning kits through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. 'We aim to improve not just academic outcomes but also ensure that students grow into confident and socially aware individuals. Schools are encouraged to come forward with suggestions in the best interest of students, and the administration will consider them positively,' he added. At other PCMC schools too, the day was filled with energy and enthusiasm. Elected representatives marked their presence at multiple schools. MLC Amit Gorakhe visited the PCMC public school at Swami Vivekanand Vidyamandir in Kalbhor Nagar and addressed students, noting the tremendous potential of children in municipal schools. 'I was once a student here. To return as the chief guest today is a moment of great pride,' he shared. MLC Uma Khapre participated in an event marking the first day of the school at Yashwantrao Chavan Girls' Primary School in Thergaon and praised teachers as sculptors shaping young minds. She emphasized that such welcoming ceremonies instil confidence and motivation among students at the start of the academic year. In Pimple Gurav, MLA Shankar Jagtap joined the school's welcome programme and urged students to make the most of their education and bring recognition to their school, city, and state. PCMC Additional Commissioner Pradip Jambhale Patil visited a school in Pimple Nilakh, where he was welcomed with dhol-tasha performances by students. He handed out educational kits and encouraged the teaching staff to continue focusing on academic excellence, which, he noted, has been drawing more students to municipal schools in recent years. Other senior civic officials, including Additional Commissioners Vijaykumar Khorate and Trupti Sandbhor, Chief accounts and finance officer Pravin Jain, Chief Information and Technology Officer Nilkanth Poman, and Deputy Commissioners Sachin Pawar, Rajesh Agale, and Mamata Shinde visited several schools across the city to personally welcome students. The schools had made elaborate preparations for the day, featuring traditional welcome rituals like applying tilak and giving roses, eye-catching decorations, and selfie points that made the first day memorable for children. Principals, teachers, and school management committees worked closely with civic teams to create a joyful atmosphere in the schools.
