As a child, I was often curious about my father's absence. My mother navigated those awkward questions with grace, never speaking negatively of him, even on Father's Day. She'd soften the truth without burdening me with the complexities of his situation: "He loves you, even if you can't see him."
Her words resonated deeply, illuminating feelings I didn't fully comprehend until I became a father myself. Now, as a therapist and the author of "Present: The Crisis of American Fatherhood and the Power of Showing Up," I've dedicated over a decade to supporting fathers who want to reconnect with their kids.
Many of these dads are often misunderstood. They face barriers like divorce, incarceration, substance use, unemployment and mental health challenges. A common narrative paints them as uncaring simply because they aren't physically present.
So let's pause and challenge this assumption. One phrase I hate hearing on Father's Day is, "You should step it up." (A similar one is, "Why aren't you more present?") Instead, we should acknowledge these fathers. A simple gesture can go a long way: "You are important, and we celebrate you today. Support is here if you ask for it."
Here are a few things I've learned over the last decade in working with dads.
It's tempting to join the chorus of voices that equate physical absence with emotional unavailability or lack of interest. Yet, if we take a moment to reflect on that first time we held our children, we realize that no father dreams of being apart from their child, especially on special days like Father's Day.
For many dads, the day is a painful reminder of their absence, and acknowledging them can provide a much-needed lifeline. As a therapist, it would be remiss of me not to say that it is okay to go to therapy as a man.
Just like athletes rely on coaches and teammates, parents need their own support systems.
Do you have someone to call when you're feeling under the weather? If not, consider finding a trusted doctor. Do you have a friend you can lean on when you're feeling down? If not, think about reaching out someone you've always felt comfortable talking to.
Every parent, especially fathers facing challenges, benefits from a supportive community. Parenting isn't something we can do effectively in isolation.
For many, this involves grappling with past choices, regrets and the journey toward reconciliation.
Instead of labeling themselves as "bad fathers," many dads might shift their narrative to: "I am an imperfect father who tries my best." This re-translation of self-perception is crucial for healing. They might acknowledge, "I've made mistakes, but I'm working on making things right."
When you confront your past, you can set the stage for growth and connection.
Recent studies, including a working paper from economists at the University of California, Merced, the U.S. Census Bureau and the University of Maryland, reveal the profound effects parental separation has on children, particularly due to divorce.
Factors such as lost financial resources, changes in neighborhood quality and reduced parental involvement account for a significant portion of the negative outcomes children face. Despite the challenges, one truth remains: Separated or struggling parents, whether mothers or fathers, always want the best for their children.
Two narratives can coexist — one of struggle and one of care. Dads may be distant for various reasons, but that doesn't mean they don't love and want to support their children. Recognizing the duality in these stories enables us to approach Father's Day with empathy and understanding.
Let's rewrite the narrative surrounding fathers, especially those who are struggling or absent. Let's offer recognition and support. A simple acknowledgment can remind these fathers that their roles matter and that they are not alone in their journey.
By understanding that all fathers, regardless of their struggles, want to do their best for their children, we can help create an environment where all dads feel valued and supported.
Such acknowledgment transforms Father's Day into a celebration not just of fathers, but of the unbreakable bond of love and dedication they strive to uphold even in their weakest moments.

What to Know About 'Forever Chemicals' if You're Pregnant
Sara Blixt avoided canned tuna – even though it was the food she craved. But tuna meant mercury, a potential threat to her unborn son. When he was born, she managed to breastfeed for only three months. "I felt like crap," she said. Three years later, Blixt learned that she and others in her town, Ronneby, Sweden, had extremely high levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, in their blood. The municipal water supply was contaminated by firefighting foam used on a military base for years. Blixt had likely passed the PFAS to her children through pregnancy and breastfeeding, and again by mixing formula with tap water. Today, Sara Blixt is grateful – her children are healthy. Yet research increasingly shows that for many others, PFAS may mean harm: Fetal exposure has been linked to a higher risk of birth defects, liver disease, language disorders, and cancer. Mothers, too, may get pregnancy complications due to PFAS, research suggests – such as high blood pressure and preeclampsia, a serious condition responsible for over 10% of maternal deaths across the globe. And just like Blixt, they may have trouble breastfeeding, and throw in the towel sooner than they would like. PFAS, also known as "forever chemicals," are a class of man-made compounds used in nonstick and waterproof products. They are everywhere: in makeup, cookware, parchment paper, microwaveable popcorn, and rain-proof clothing. We ingest them via contaminated tap water and foods like meat and fish, and we absorb them through the skin. Our bodies can get rid of PFAS, but slowly: It takes three to five years for the levels of PFOS, a common type of PFAS, to go down by half. "Everyone carries a little bit of PFAS in them," said Tracey Woodruff, PhD, MPH, a reproductive health researcher at the University of California, San Francisco. Dangers During Pregnancy PFAS are bad news for everyone, but pregnancy is a particularly vulnerable time. "The fetus is going through a lot of important biological changes that can be interrupted, and that can influence the future baby's health," Woodruff said. For mothers, breasts change to prepare for breastfeeding, breathing rate increases, and blood volume expands. PFAS get transferred to the fetus via the placenta, which provides oxygen and nutrients to the developing baby. "Some toxins sneak through because they're similar in shape and size to things that the fetus might need to grow," said Megan Romano, PhD, an epidemiologist at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. PFAS structurally resemble fatty acids, she said, which could help explain "why they seem to cross the placenta more than some of the other persistent pollutants." Studies show that depending on the type of PFAS, the fetus receives between 30% and 80% of the mother's blood levels. Over the course of pregnancy, PFAS accumulate in the placenta – so the mother's levels go down after birth. "When you expel the placenta, it takes out a whole bunch of PFAS," Woodruff said. That's good for subsequent children: Several studies have found that the amount of PFAS the baby receives lowers with each birth. (Blood loss during birth also helps clear PFAS from the mother's body.) PFAS and Lower Birthweight High prenatal exposure to PFOA, another type of PFAS, has been linked to lower birthweights – studies show reductions of up to 8.8 ounces in babies born to highly exposed mothers. Low birthweight has been linked to childhood obesity. Romano saw this play out in her research in New Hampshire: Some children who had elevated PFAS exposure were born small, but grew faster than others over the next two to three years, crossing into obese territory. "There may be a metabolic setpoint where your body is like, 'OK, I need to be taking in calories and growing all the time because I'm small and I need to catch up.' And then that doesn't really turn off when you do catch up," Romano said. Several theories could explain why PFAS may affect birthweight. Animal research shows that forever chemicals interfere with how the mother's body handles fats, which then affects the baby's liver. (Negative effects on liver metabolism have been found in human fetuses, too.) PFAS also throws off maternal blood circulation, potentially affecting the placenta, the baby's nutrition center. "More than likely, it's all of the above," Romano said. More Dangers: Cancer, Immunity, Brain Development The negative effects of PFAS don't end with birth. A 2024 Finnish study showed that if a mother has elevated blood levels of one type of PFAS (found, for example, in some low pile carpets), her children are at a higher risk of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common childhood cancer. A June study found that children exposed to high PFAS levels in the womb have 17% higher risk of high blood pressure as teenagers. Other research links prenatal PFAS exposure with weaker vaccination response, suggesting children's immune systems may not be working as well as they should. A 2025 study found that babies exposed to PFAS during pregnancy grow up to be infection-prone kids. Brain development may be affected, too. In Denmark, parents of children who came into contact with PFAS before birth reported more behavioral problems, from restlessness to temper tantrums. In Sweden, researchers found that highly exposed children from Ronneby were more likely to have a developmental language disorder. (This could mean limited vocabulary or challenges understanding spoken language.) "Language development is a marker of general neural development," said Christel Nielsen, PhD, an epidemiologist at Lund University, Sweden, and one of the study's authors. "It could be a signal that this child might need more support to develop its full potential." The Breast Milk Connection Besides the placenta, PFAS can transfer to the infant through breast milk, although less efficiently, Nielsen said. In one study of Norwegian toddlers, the children's PFOS and PFOA levels increased by 3% to 5% per month of breastfeeding. The milk itself may be less nutritious. Romano's recent study showed that breast milk from women exposed to PFAS contained more saturated fatty acids and n-6 fatty acids – not ideal. The milk also had lower levels of lactose. "On average, if there is a higher lactose content in the milk, it means that you're producing more," Romano said. This could explain why women who were exposed to PFAS during pregnancy are often unable to breastfeed for as long as they'd like. But breastfeeding parents should not be discouraged, even if they were highly exposed to forever chemicals, both Romano and Nielsen agree. Breast milk boosts the immune system, helps the brain develop, and feeds the friendly gut microflora, potentially offsetting the negative impacts of PFAS. So How Can You Avoid Forever Chemicals? Dodging PFAS completely is tough, but you can reduce your exposure. Choose cookware made of "glass, cast iron, stainless steel, non-coated," Woodruff said. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables and fewer animal products – meat and fish contain more forever chemicals than do plants. Skip microwave popcorn – which combines PFAS (used in the bag lining) with high temperatures and fat for a particularly unhealthy mix. PFAS can enter through the skin. So waterproof clothing and flame-retardant textiles can be sources. Go easy on makeup, especially foundation: In one study, people who usually wore it had over 50% higher levels of certain PFAS in their blood. If you're pregnant, don't paint or remodel that baby room yourself: Some wallpaper, paint, and carpeting contain PFAS – although PFAS-free alternatives exist. "It's better to be safe than sorry," said Woodruff, whose team compiled a list of evidence-based tips. How can you know if you've been highly exposed? There are U.S. and European water-contamination maps. Some jobs, like firefighters or workers who make or handle PFAS-containing materials, are linked to a higher risk. If you're concerned, you can ask your doctor for a PFAS blood test – though the cost can be high and access to the tests can vary. One potential hope for those with high PFAS levels is a drug called cholestyramine, which has long been used for lowering cholesterol. Early studies suggest the drug helps the body recognize PFAS as a harmful substance and prevents it from being reabsorbed in the liver. A clinical trial found that it may decrease PFAS blood levels by 15% to 60%. The results are "promising," said Nielsen, and targeting highly exposed women before their first child "would be a top priority." But more research is needed before scientists can recommend the drug to the general population. Above all, women shouldn't blame themselves for PFAS, Woodruff said. "This problem was made by the chemical manufacturing industry." What we now need is for the government to step in and regulate PFAS as a class, she said: Otherwise, we may drive ourselves crazy trying to figure out ways to avoid these chemicals. And the last thing parents-to-be need is more stress – which, by the way, is not best for the baby, either.

Cannabis Use May Double Risk of Death From Cardiovascular Disease, Study Finds
A new scientific analysis indicates that cannabis use may increase the risk of cardiovascular health issues, including stroke. In an accompanying editorial, two health experts say these risks are serious enough to warrant the regulation of cannabis in the same manner as tobacco. Previous research has reported on the health benefits of cannabis for people with chronic pain and other ailments, but experts say the potential effects of cannabis should be discussed with your doctor. Medical experts are sending out another strong warning about cannabis use and the risk of cardiovascular health issues. In an analysis published in the journal Heart, researchers report heightened risks of stroke, acute coronary syndrome, and death from cardiovascular disease associated with frequent cannabis use. In an accompanying editorial, two health experts say the dangers from cannabis use are serious enough to warrant the substance being regulated much like tobacco. The editorial authors say the warnings are particularly important because the recent widespread legalization of the drug may have convinced many people that cannabis use is safe. 'Frequent cannabis use has increased in several countries, and many users believe that it is a safe and natural way to relieve pain or stress. In contrast, a growing body of evidence links cannabis use to significant harms throughout life, including cardiovascular health of adults,' wrote Stanton Glantz, PhD, an emeritus professor at the University of California San Francisco, and Lynn Silver, MD, a professor in UCSF's Department of Epidemiology and a program director at the Public Health Institute in Oakland, CA. 'Specifically, cannabis should be treated like tobacco: not criminalized but discouraged, with protection of bystanders from secondhand exposure,' the editorial authors added. Robert Page II, PharmD, a professor in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and the Department of Physical Medicine/Rehabilitation at the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, noted the analysis relied on observational studies, but said the message is clear. 'This meta-analysis validates current large observation studies that cannabis should be considered a potential risk factor for premature development of ASCVD (atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease), said Page, who was chair of an American Heart Association writing group that authored a 2020 report on cannabis, medical cannabis, and heart health. Page wasn't involved in the present study. 'If we ignore these signals, we are destined to repeat the fatal history of cigarette smoking, which took years to finally realize its devastating effects on cardiovascular health and mortality,' he told Healthline. Cannabis and heart health In their analysis, researchers looked at 24 studies published between January 2016 and January 2023 that included about 200 million people. The study participants were mostly between the ages of 19 and 59. Cannabis use tended to be more frequent in males and in younger people. The researchers said their analysis of that data revealed that cannabis use doubled the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. They also reported that people who used cannabis had a 29% higher risk of acute coronary syndrome, a condition that causes sudden reduced or blocked blood flow to the heart, as well as a 20% higher risk of stroke. The researchers acknowledged that many of the studies they analyzed lacked information on missing data and had imprecise measures of cannabis exposure. Most of the studies were also observational. Nonetheless, their analysis comes less than a month after another study concluded that chronic use of cannabis is associated with a higher risk of endothelial dysfunction, a type of non-obstructive coronary artery disease in which there are no heart artery blockages but the large blood vessels on the heart's surface constrict instead of dilating. In addition, another analysis from earlier this year reported that cannabis users were six times more likely to have a heart attack than non-users. A 2024 study concluded that people who use cannabis to treat chronic pain had a higher risk of atrial fibrillation and other forms of heart arrhythmia. The researchers in the new analysis say their findings are particularly important because the use of cannabis has soared in recent years. They also note that the potency of the drug has increased. There was no delineation in the analysis, however, on the risks of smoking cannabis compared to ingesting it. Cheng-Han Chen, MD, an interventional cardiologist and medical director of the Structural Heart Program at MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center in California, said both methods may present health risks. Chen wasn't involved in the study. 'It is thought that ingesting THC increases systolic absorption of the chemical when compared to smoking THC and thus results in greater adverse effects,' he told Healthline. 'However, cannabis smoke comes with a separate set of health concerns, as the smoke contains many carcinogens and mutagens similar to tobacco smoke.' Ziva Cooper, the director of the UCLA Center for Cannabis and Cannabinoids, said the frequency someone uses cannabis, as well as the dosage, are also important factors. Cooper was likewise not involved in the study. She noted that new research is starting to show there are mental health risks to frequent cannabis use. One of those is cannabis use disorder, a condition that is estimated to affect 30% of people who use the substance. 'There are new risks that are emerging that weren't even on the radar,' Cooper told Healthline. She added cannabis can also impair people's ability to drive as well as impair their cognitive abilities. 'These are things that can affect a person's everyday life,' Cooper said. Defending cannabis use Paul Armentano, the deputy director of NORML, a non-profit that advocates for the responsible use of cannabis, acknowledges there are studies that report health risks associated with cannabis use. Armentano wasn't involved in the study. However, he told Healthline there are others who conclude there is no risk or even a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease from cannabis use. These include a 2023 study, a 2020 study, and a 2023 meta-analysis. 'In short, while tobacco smoke exposure's role in cardiovascular disease is well established, the potential role of cannabis smoke is not,' Armentano said. 'Nonetheless, persons wishing to mitigate their intake of cannabis smoke can do so via the use of herbal vaporizers, which heat cannabinoids to the point of activation but below the point of combustion.' Armentano cited studies in 2006 and 2007 that reported no health effects from vaporization. Some research has reported on some overall health benefits derived from cannabis use. A 2023 study concluded that medical cannabis can improve the quality of life for some people with chronic pain. Other research has reported that cannabis can be helpful to people with depression, social anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). There are also indications that cannabis products can help ease the side effects of cancer treatments. Talking with your doctor about cannabis In their editorial, Glantz and Silver encourage medical professionals to become leaders in cannabis education. 'There is an important role for public health and public policy in addressing the risks identified [in the new analysis],' they wrote. 'While the trend toward legalization is established, that does not mean that the risks of cannabis use should be minimized or its use encouraged.' Page said he takes cannabis use into consideration when assessing his patients' cardiovascular health. 'While many of the current cardiovascular risk calculators do not include smoking cannabis into their algorithms, I do include it (just like smoking cigarettes) when assessing patients' cardiovascular risk and consider it just as powerful a risk factor as smoking cigarettes,' he said. Page added that people should be informed about the many potential health issues of cannabis use before deciding whether to use it. 'Know the risks and talk to your primary care provider before considering any use, medical or recreational. Many younger adults feel invincible and have the belief that 'This will not happen to me' or 'I could never develop cannabis use disorder.' However, it does and can occur,' he said. 'For older adults, I caution them regarding potential drug-drug interactions as both THC [tetrahydrocannabinol] and CBD [cannabidiol] can have effects on a large majority of medications, both pharmacokinetically and pharmacodynamically,' Page added. Chen agrees that patients need to educate themselves about cannabis before trying it. 'Any form of cannabis use does involve some risk to your health. Everyone must decide for themselves how much risk they want to expose themselves to,' said Chen. 'I would advise people to avoid smoking cannabis, as the smoke can directly harm the lungs. Also, patients with known pre-existing cardiovascular disease or with cardiovascular risk factors should consider avoiding cannabis use in general, given the potential harm to heart health,' he added. Cooper noted that cannabis has 500 different chemical components, so its effects can vary greatly from person to person.
