"We left Kursk Oblast? Haven't heard": Ukraine's Special Forces reveal details of new operation
Ukrainian Special Operations Forces (SOF) have reported that they continue to carry out missions in Russia's Kursk Oblast and have captured Russian soldiers.

Details: It is reported that during the special operation, SOF fighters also forced two Russian soldiers to surrender. One of the prisoners of war was evacuated to safety on a stretcher, while the other hobbled along on his own.
Background:
On 26 April, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin was informed that the last settlement in Kursk Oblast, Gornal, had allegedly been "liberated from Ukrainian forces".
Ukraine's General Staff stressed that the claims by senior Russian officials about the end of fighting in Kursk Oblast do not correspond to reality.
On 27 April, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukrainian troops continue active defensive operations in Russia's Kursk and Belgorod oblasts.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said in a social media update that six people were killed when a missile struck and badly damaged a building in the central Shevchenkivskyi district, but that the rescue operation was still underway and there might be more casualties buried under the rubble. "A terrible picture in the Shevchenko district. Extensive damage to a five-story building. Rescuers, medics, and municipal services are working at the scene. The blast wave also damaged the apartments of the 25-story residential building opposite. Ten people were rescued from it. Among them, a child and a pregnant woman," said Klitschko. Another 22 people were injured, 12 of them hospitalized, in attacks on residential and non-residential buildings in five other districts of the capital, he added. The governor of the region, Mykola Kalashnyk, said one person was killed in Bilotserkivka district, southwest of Kyiv, and four were injured, two of whom were admitted to the hospital. Residential targets were hit in Boryspil and Bila Tserkva, where a medical facility and a hotel were also destroyed. The town of Bucha, just northwest of Kyiv, one of the first Ukrainian settlements overrun by Russian forces and scene of the U.N.-documented execution of at least 73 civilians and other suspected war crimes after Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, also came under attack, damaging several houses and vehicles. In neighboring Chernihiv province to the northeast, which borders both Russia and Belarus, at least three people were killed and 11 injured, including four teenagers, in missile and drone strikes on Chernihiv, the regional capital, and four other districts, according to Chernihiv Gov. Viacheslav Chaus. In Donetsk, one of four Ukrainian provinces partly or fully controlled by Russian forces, Gov. Vadym Filashkin reported on Telegram that two people had been killed in Siversk, 18 miles east of the city of Slovyansk, and in Myrne, east of Pokrovsk, with five more injured. In part-Russian-occupied Kherson, Gov. Oleksandr Prokudin reported via social media that one person had been killed and six injured in Russian drone, artillery and airstrikes on Kherson city and several other communities, damaging seven apartment buildings, 14 houses, a gas pipeline and other civilian targets. The Ukrainian Air Force said on its official account on Telegram that of 368 incoming attack drones, ballistic and cruise missiles, mostly targeting Kyiv, air defenses managed to down all but 14.

‘Our people were armed by the Russians' during apartheid, South African official reveals
South Africa's vice president, Paul Mashatile, paid a visit to Moscow last week where he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and his team. During the meeting, the subject of apartheid was revisited. The vice president expressed gratitude for Russia's aid during the apartheid era. 'We've continued to be friends to Russia, and they've continued to be friends to us, so why we are here and why Africa is responding is because Russia has always been there, at the time of need for most of African countries to see how they can assist, support, and be with them in terms of the struggles that they went through,' he added. The topic of media portrayal and narrative framing also came up, as Khoza praised Sputnik 's intentions to open an office in South Africa, saying that doing so is essential to accurately representing African reality. 'You may try and understand issues from a distance, but when you get closer and more intimate with the situation, you get a different understanding of the dynamics, issues, and the perceptions of people in that particular area,' Khoza remarked. In February, Russia fast tracked its cultrual engagement with Africa with the establishment of an editorial center in Ethiopia. The media center which is based in Ethiopia will be Russia's first large-scale, multi-functional editorial center on the continent. Vladimir Putin and Paul Mashatile's meeting last week During the meeting last week, President Vladimir Putin emphasized that Russia and South Africa have a common viewpoint on a number of global issues. "We share solidarity when it comes to international agenda items," he added, adding that both nations always coordinate their efforts on multilateral forums. Putin also emphasized that improving cooperation with African states, notably South Africa, is a top priority for Russian foreign policy. This heightened emphasis on bilateral cooperation is seen in the larger context of Russia's strategic shift to Africa, particularly as it seeks deeper ties amid geopolitical tensions with the West. In response, Deputy President Mashatile echoed the aforemtioned sentiments of Keith Khoza during the formal meeting, stating, "The people of South Africa will never forget Moscow's help in their liberation from apartheid."
