TGSRTC workers' union for suspension of contractual employment
A workers' union of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has demanded that the management hit the brakes on its plan to hire workers on a contractual basis. Citing the retirement of over a few thousand workers over the past decade, the union has called for regular recruitment to fill long-pending vacancies in the corporation.
The Staff and Workers Federation (SWF) has urged a roll back of the hiring move and sought the notification of regular, full-time posts.
The union maintained that upwards of 10,000 workers had retired in the last 10 years. They claimed that little or no direct recruitment has happened in the same time period. Only a handful of compassionate appointments have been made, union office bearers Veeranjaneyulu and V. S. Rao said.
With the Mahalaxmi Scheme, that provides free bus rides to women, launched in December 2023, occupancy has spiked. This has led to the need for augmenting the bus fleet of more buses and increasing staff strength. However, the union alleged that the TGSRTC has not expanded its fleet to meet the rising demand. Recruitments too have been put on the back burner.
Arguing that the TGSRTC is a permanent service-oriented institution, the union asserted that contractual recruitment not only contravenes certain stipulations, but also is a betrayal of unemployed youth. They noted that while both regular and contract staff perform the same duties, the latter face severe pay disparities and job insecurity.
The union also criticised the practice of outsourcing recruitment to private contractors. The government's approach is akin to dividing unions, they said.

HYDERABAD: The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has increased tariffs for bus passes across various categories from Monday, with hikes ranging from 21% to 50%, affecting thousands of daily commuters, including students and employees. The monthly General Bus Ticket (GBT) Ordinary pass has risen 21.74% from Rs 1,150 to Rs 1,400, while the GBT Metro Express pass has gone up 23.08% from Rs 1,300 to Rs 1,600. The Pushpak A/C pass remains unchanged at Rs 5,000, excluding GST. From June 9, an additional toll plaza user charge of Rs 10 per toll plaza will apply only on routes passing through toll plazas. City routes in Hyderabad are exempt as they have no toll plazas. Citing overloading of City Ordinary buses in Hyderabad and suburbs during peak student hours, TGSRTC will now allow students with city bus passes to also travel on Metro Express buses within the city.

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has increased the bus pass fare of all the categories by 20 per cent. The revised fares came into effect on Monday. Following the recent order, the new bus pass rates are – the ordinary bus pass fare has been increased from Rs 1,150 to Rs 1,400, Metro Express pass increased from Rs 1,300 to Rs 1,600 and Metro Deluxe bus fare hiked from Rs 1,450 to Rs 1,800. According to TGSRTC, the fees for student bus passes have remained unchanged for the past three years. However, due to rising expenses, the Corporation has decided to revise the charges for both student bus passes and monthly bus passes for general passengers, effective from June 9, 2025. A senior officer at TGSRTC said that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) updates the toll tax annually. Each time the toll tax is revised, the state government has authorided TGSRTC under the GO 24 to raise the user fees for passengers. Consequently, the Corporation has modified the toll plaza user charge effective from June 9. However, this increase in toll plaza user charges will not apply since there are no toll plazas on the routes within Hyderabad city. The Corporation will impose an extra Rs 10 per toll plaza on every passenger who passes through the toll plaza. If a passenger does not pass through the toll plaza, there will be no user charge. Meanwhile, daily commuters have expressed concern over the sharp hike in bus pass rates. Lakhs of students and employees rely on TGSRTC buses every day, and many are now urging the state government to reconsider the revised fares. The passengers urged the government to reconsider the steep hike to avoid hardship for daily travelers.
