Pittsburgh Steelers veterans, rookies come together for 2025 OTAs
The weather has felt more like October than May, but the Pittsburgh Steelers have made the most of Mother Nature during Organized Team Activities.
The week of voluntary sessions does not always see tremendous attendance, but there was a noticeable veteran presence at practice. Many of them say there's a lot of value in being there for mentorship and to shake the offseason rust.

'We've got a lot of new stuff that we're doing, a lot people in different places, a lot of new schemes. So, it's definitely exciting to be here right now,' said Patrick Queen.
One of the new faces is cornerback Darius Slay. He is entering his 13th season but says he still sees OTAs as an opportunity to get back to fundamentals and learn more about his new teammates. That includes establishing his role as a mentor to younger ones, like Joey Porter Jr and Beanie Bishop.
'Everybody has different stories, different mindsets. I just try to be an open book. Just absorb what they're talking about and give them information on what I've been through or how I got to this point. And they ask questions. That's the great thing about them,' said Slay.
Slay said his new relationships are progressing quickly. Some of the younger players are planning to join him in Houston for workouts this summer.

While guys like Slay and Cam Heyward are natural leaders for the team, others like Alex Highsmith are growing into more prominent leadership roles.
'Just to really influence young guys and show them the way of what it takes. When I got here as a rookie, I had TJ and Bud and Cam, having veterans like that in my room really helped me to progress in my career. I just want to do what I can to help the young guys progress in their careers as well,' said Highsmith.
Multiple players confirm that T.J. Watt was not at practice this week. He is due for a new contract. Highsmith said he knows Watt wants to be there and believes a new deal will happen for his counterpart.

This feels like questionable reasoning, given that Fitzpatrick has become one of the best safeties in the league, has been a fan-favorite staple of Pittsburgh's defense for years, and could still start next to Elliott ... like last season. Advertisement Fitzpatrick would be a massive upgrade from Wilson - who some picked to be a post-June cut in Dallas - but the option to pursue him in a trade simply won't be there, no matter how much the Cowboys are "in need". After a busy offseason, Dallas also isn't ready to fork over any more draft capital than they already have from their four trades. Fitzpatrick is coming off a down year statistically, but has still been selected for the past three Pro Bowls. He ranked No. 16 in Pro Football Focus' safety rankings heading into 2025. Just one spot below him? Malik Hooker. With Hooker commanding things deep alongside Wilson, the Cowboys should feel somewhat confident going into next season. Confident enough to not chase after hypothetical trades that other teams' wouldn't go for in the first place. Advertisement The real concern remains at cornerback, where safeties Israel Mukuamu and Juanyeh Thomas may be called on to fill in on occasion until Trevon Diggs and Shavon Revel come back from injury. Fitzpatrick would be a fit on most teams around the league, but his best fit remains the team he currently plays for. Hence why the Steelers signed him to a four-year contract extension just two years ago. Steelers OT Broderick Jones in spotlight after 2024 struggles and position change
All the attention on the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason has been about the addition of quarterback Aaron Rodgers. But for the Steelers, there is another position that might be more important than quarterback for this team's success in 2025. That would be offensive tackle. Last season, the tandem of Dan Moore Jr. on the left and Broderick Jones on the right struggled. And to be fair, Jones was worse than Moore. Nevertheless, Moore is now in line to start at left tackle for the Tennessee Titans and Jones has shifted to left tackle to allow Troy Fautanu to start on the right. Pro Football Focus named one make-or-break player for every NFL team and to no one's surprise, Jones was the Steeler who made the list. The Steelers desperately need production and continuity at offensive tackle, especially with Aaron Rodgers lined up to be their starting quarterback. Former first-round pick Broderick Jones spent the vast majority of his first two seasons at right tackle and struggled to a 58.5 PFF overall grade. Jones is not only playing for his job, he's got the pressure of Fautanu performing as well in his old spot. Fautanu missed all of his rookie season with a knee injury and his return is what prompted all of this. But after allowing 11 sacks in 2024, if Jones can't step up, there's literally no one else. Rodgers isn't as mobile as he once was and Jones will be protecting his blindside.

This time last year, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott didn't have his No. 1 weapon, CeeDee Lamb, on the practice field. This time around, CeeDee has been at The Star from Day 1 of OTAs through to the end of minicamp. The chemistry that was noticeably lacking early last season is now there with Dak and CeeDee already hitting the ground running. "It's valuable, CeeDee being here,' Prescott said. 'It's hard to even put in comparison him being here, the work we're able to get versus last year, the contract negotiations, but just to have him here, having these practices getting off to a good start, understanding each other, what we're trying to accomplish has been monumental." With all eyes now on Dallas' "Big 3," it appears that the trio is in a good spot as attention turns to Oxnard. Granted, this is the time of the offseason when Dak usually takes some offensive players on a little getaway to build chemistry and camaraderie, and we expect this offseason to be no different.
