Pro-poor schemes made healthcare affordable: Shah
Bengaluru: Union home minister Amit Shah on Friday lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government for its "holistic" approach in addressing health issues faced by the public. He was speaking after inaugurating the Adichunchanagiri University (ACU) Bengaluru campus. "Our leader and PM Modi had said several years ago in Gujarat that poverty's biggest issue is illness, and the cost of treatment; the administration has to provide for the treatment of illness for the poor. I can say with pride today that Modi, when he became the PM , has fulfilled it by providing 60 crore poor with free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh," Shah said. The Modi government has addressed the problem of health with a holistic view, with initiatives like building toilets in about 12 crore houses, through Fit India movement , Yoga Day, Mission Indradanush and Poshan Abhiyaan, Ayushman Bharat , and Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana, he added. "In a way, it is being ensured that a citizen doesn't fall ill from the time he/she is in the mother's womb until the person becomes a complete citizen, and in case the person is ill, he takes treatment without paying a higher price for it," he added. Major efforts were taken to increase the number of doctors in the country, Shah said. In 2014, the country had 7 AIIMS, and today there are 23 AIIMS, and the number of medical colleges has increased from 387 to 780. "There were 51,000 MBBS seats then (2014), today it is 1,18,000, and the number of PG seats was 31,000, today it is 74,000.," he added.

Mehbooba Mufti urges Union Home Secretary to intervene in Shabir Shah's case on humanitarian grounds
Former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti has urged Government of India to intervene on humanitarian grounds and ensure medical intervention and access to the family of incarcerated Hurriyat leader Shabir Shah , who is lodged in Tihar jail . In July this year, as per his family, Shah, 74, will start his 40th year in jail and his ninth consecutive year in Tihar jail. Shah's family informed that in the wake of grave medical concerns and escalating risk to his life, they would request, through lawyers, to put him in the house arrest in Delhi as has been done in the cases of Zahoor Watali and Gautam Navlakha. "Shabir Shah incarcerated in Tihar Jail for a considerable period is reportedly suffering from prostate cancer and is in urgent need of surgery. Deeply unfortunate that the Courts have barred his family from being present during his treatment," Mufti wrote on X. "Reports of Shabir Shah Sahab's serious health condition in Tihar Jail, and denial of access to his family members to talk to him on phone for the past two years, or care for him when he is facing such a medical emergency and is in dire need of a surgery, is very unfortunate and disturbing," said Mirwaiz adding, "I spoke to his wife yesterday who told me that the family's bail plea on his grave medical condition too has been rejected and she does not know how to help him." "The prolonged imprisonment, devoid of due legal process, has made the process their punishment. I also appeal to the elected government of J&K to raise this serious issue and provide every assistance that they can in this matter," said Mirwaiz. Shah's wife Dr Bilques Shah in a communication wrote that for two years they have no contact with Shah as he had been disallowed to make any calls to family from jail. "This situation that our family has been placed in is not only cruel—it is inhumane. What is the point of a legal system that does not even allow a family to hear the voice of their loved one? Also our bail application on health and humanitarian grounds was denied," she wrote. Shah's wife further said that given his advanced age and multiple comorbidities, the family cannot entrust his life to the unpredictable discretion of jail authorities. "The risks are far too great. This is not just about Shabir Shah. This is about justice. It is about humanity. About recognising that a human being deserves dignity. Let not the silence of prison walls drown out the voice of justice," she wrote.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurates Bengaluru campus of Adichunchanagiri University
Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the new Bengaluru campus of Adichunchanagiri University (ACU) on Friday. Built at a cost of Rs 200 crore, the sprawling 16-acre campus houses a 1,000-bed hospital and educational facilities for 4,000 students. In his address, Shah lauded the efforts of the Adichunchanagiri Mutt for its service-oriented approach rooted in the principle of 'Sarva jan hitaya, sarva jan sukhaya (The welfare and happiness of all).' Shah said, 'This complex will become a great medium of service in a true sense.' He praised the Mutt's wide-ranging social impact – from running rural health centres and providing free treatment to supporting education for underprivileged children. Referring to the legacy of Jagadguru Dr Balagangadharanatha Swamiji, the former chief pontiff of the Adichunchanagiri Mutt, and the efforts of Dr Nirmalanandanatha Mahaswamiji, the current pontiff of the Adichunchanagiri Mutt, Shah said the Mutt has successfully combined spirituality, culture, and modern education, connecting youth with tradition while enabling them to find a respectable place in society. He said the Mutt's activities are 'anchored on nine pillars – Anna (food), Akshara (education), Arogya (health), Adhyatmika (spirituality), Aashraya (shelter), Aranya (environment), Aakaalu (disaster relief), Anukampa (compassion), and Anubandh (community bonding).' Shah also cited key central government interventions such as the Ayushman Bharat scheme, which provides free treatment of up to Rs 5 lakh for 60 crore people, the construction of nearly 12 crore toilets, the launch of the Fit India Movement, Mission Indradhanush for child immunisation, and the Poshan Abhiyan to address maternal and child nutrition. He further pointed to the expansion in medical education infrastructure under the Narendra Modi government: 'The number of AIIMS institutions has increased from 7 to 23, medical colleges from 387 to 780, MBBS seats from 51,000 to 1.18 lakh, and postgraduate seats from 31,000 to 74,000.' Speaking about affordable healthcare access, he noted that under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Yojana, essential medicines are now available at 20 per cent of the market rate through over 15,000 centres. The 1,000-bed hospital on the newly inaugurated ACU campus has facilities for cardiology, neurosurgery, oncology, and transplants, including kidney, liver, and cornea.
