Lacazette's farewell to Lyon marred by burglary

LYON: Alexandre Lacazette's joy at scoring a double in his final Ligue 1 match for Lyon evaporated when the club captain learned his house had been burgled during Saturday's 2-0 victory over Angers.
The former France international striker – whose double took his total for the club to 201 in two spells and secured European football for them next term – had €50,000 (RM240,000) and luxury goods stolen from his home in Lyon, a police source told AFP.
The burglar alarm went off at 2130 local time (1930GMT) and three individuals were caught on camera gaining access to the premises via ventilation ducts.
However, it took another four hours for the facts to be discovered according to local newspaper Le Progres.
The police source told AFP that leather goods and a car key had been stolen, though, the vehicle had not been taken.
Lacazette, who turns 34 on May 28, scored his 201 goals in 391 matches – either side of a five year stay with Arsenal – and is second on the list of all-time scorers for Lyon behind Fleury Di Nallo, who garnered 222 in 494 games from 1960 to 1974. - AFP

NBA great Vlade Divac injured in Montenegro motorcycle crash

BELGRADE: Former basketball star and LA Lakers centre Vlade Divac is recovering today after breaking his hip in a motorcycle accident in Montenegro, hospital staff told AFP. The 57-year-old was injured late Thursday after falling from his motorcycle near the coast, said hospital spokeswoman Ljubica Mitrovic. "Divac was immediately brought to the hospital in Risan, where doctors conducted thorough examinations," she said, referring to a town about 47 kilometres (29 miles) west of the capital Podgorica. "Unfortunately, it was confirmed that he had suffered a hip fracture. Surgery was performed." Divac is in a stable condition at the hospital. Drafted into the NBA in 1989 by the Los Angeles Lakers, the towering centre became one of the first European players to make an impact in the league. He played seven seasons for the Lakers before moving on to the Charlotte Hornets then the Sacramento Kings, and eventually finishing his NBA career back with the Lakers. Mentored by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson, he quickly adapted to the NBA and became the first player born and trained outside the United States to play more than 1,000 games in the league. A silver medallist in Olympic basketball with both Yugoslavia and later Serbia, he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019 and the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2010. He played 117 games for the national team of Yugoslavia and later Serbia and Montenegro, winning World Championship titles in 1990 and 2002, and was also crowned European champion in 1989, 1991, and 1995. The hospital has asked the public and media to respect Divac's privacy during his recovery. - AFP

Sri Lanka deports dozens of Chinese cybercrime suspects

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka deported 85 Chinese nationals today, months after they were detained on suspicion of carrying out cybercrimes against banks. The suspects were expelled for violating the terms of their tourist visas and fined around US$250 each. "They were arrested by police in October over allegations that they were carrying out online scams targeting international banks," a senior immigration official, told AFP. He said the group, including 13 women, was flown to the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou on a chartered SriLankan Airlines flight this morning accompanied by Sri Lankan police and Chinese security escorts. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan police said a court in the central Kandy district ordered the electronic devices seized from the group to be handed to Chinese authorities. Those deported were among around 230 Chinese men and women detained in October on cybercrime allegations, with the remainder awaiting legal proceedings. The Chinese embassy said at the time that Beijing's crackdown on cybercriminals at home may have pushed some to go abroad. Last year, police arrested another 200 suspects, mainly Indians, who were also accused of operating online financial scams.

Myanmar junta battles guerillas for control of jade hub

Jade is considered auspicious in Chinese culture and high-quality stones can fetch astronomical sums. - Reuters YANGON: Myanmar's junta and anti-coup guerillas battled over the country's jade mining hub Friday (June 20), a combatant and a local said, displacing desperate civilians as they vied for supplies of the precious stone. Myanmar has been consumed by a many-sided civil war since a 2021 coup toppled the democratic government, with the myriad of fighting factions plundering the nation's vast natural resources to fill their coffers. Jade is considered auspicious in Chinese culture and high-quality stones can fetch astronomical sums. Fighting has raged during a Myanmar military offensive around villages and mining sites in Hpakant township of northern Kachin state, according to Naw Bu, spokesman of the Kachin Independence Army battling the junta in the area. "They came to the jade mining areas of some companies and they burned down trucks and destroyed other things," he added. "They intended to stop our income from jade mining." AFP was not able to verify the claim and a spokesman for Myanmar's junta could not be reached for comment. Battles in the area began around three weeks ago but continued in the early hours of Friday, Naw Bu said. A local resident who asked to remain anonymous said around 15 civilians had been killed since May 28 and "some residents didn't dare to stay in the combat zone and have been displaced". As Myanmar's civil war enters its fifth year, more than 3.5 million people in the country of around 50 million are currently displaced, according to United Nations figures. Kachin state hosts the largest jade deposits in the world according to geologists. Myanmar also has a huge and loosely-regulated mining sector for gold, rubies and rare earth minerals which has flourished in the war. China is also a key market for rare earth minerals, where they are used in electric vehicles the country is producing at prodigious rates. - AFP
