Scarlett Johansson's ‘Eleanor the Great' Draws Cheers, Tears at Cannes Premiere
The Oscar campaign for Eleanor the Great starts now.
Raucous cheers and quite a few tears greeted the world premiere of Scarlett Johansson's directorial debut, which premiered in Cannes' Un Certain Regard section on Tuesday.

The Cannes crowd warmly embraced the dramedy, which stars June Squibb at the titular Eleanor Morgenstern (Squibb), a fiercely independent Florida retiree who, after the sudden death of her lifelong best friend, relocates to New York to live with her daughter. A series of events leads her to a young woman, played by Erin Kellyman, suffering from the loss of her mother. The two bond over their shared grief and a desire to reconnect with their Jewish identity. But Eleanor has a secret that threatens to destroy the friendship they have built.
The Hollywood Reporter's Cannes review of the film was mixed, with critic Lovia Gyarkye saying the film had a 'bold premise that could have worked better.'
Kellyman and Squibb joined Johansson at Cannes' Debussy Theatre on Tuesday for the world premiere. Calling it 'a dream come true' if a bit 'surreal' to premiere her directorial debut in Cannes, Johansson praised Squibb for her 'courage' in portraying the fiesty, charming and complicated Eleanor, and called Kellyman's performance 'a revelation. I'm so happy for the world to meet you,' she said to the up-and-coming British talent.
It's been 10 years since Squibb has been to Cannes. She was last here with Alexander Payne's Nebraska, a role that earned her an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress. If the reception for Eleanor the Great is any indication, that second nom could be in the mail. The 95-year-old, already enjoying a remarkable late-career renaissance following her breakout turn in Thelma, was greeted with whoops and cheers as the credits rolled.
Speaking to the crowd after the premiere, Johansson said she felt 'naked' but hoped the audience would embrace the film's hopeful message.
'This is [a movie] about Jewish identity, about friendship, but really about forgiveness. Something I think we all need a lot more of nowadays,' she said. 'I hope you carry [Eleanor's] story with you now as I carry it with me.'

Ezra Miller considers returning to Hollywood: 'Solitude has been friendly to me'
Two years after Ezra Miller's last screen role and three years after a barrage of legal issues, including criminal charges and harassment allegations, The Flash star is eyeing a return. In 2022, Miller faced accusations of assault, abuse, and grooming children, and was subject of arrest for disorderly conduct, which led to a string of subsequent arrests, often following physical altercations. Certain charges, like their 2023 burglary charge in the state of Vermont, have been dropped due to plea deals Miller has struck in multiple states. Miller has since apologized for their behavior, noting in a statement provided to Entertainment Weekly that they were in "a time of intense crisis," as well as "suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment." Three years from that period of "crisis," Miller is "really, really grateful for the lessons that came with that abyss." "When you work in this industry," said the actor, who also starred in the Fantastic Beasts trilogy of films, "you will find yourself in deep, deep relation to people who do not give single f--- about you or your well being, at all — not that I don't hold a lot of remorse and lamentation for a lot of things I did and a lot of things that happened in that time." Johnny Depp doesn't regret Amber Heard trial: 'It had gone far enough'
To some, Johnny Depp's headline-making defamation trial with ex-wife Amber Heard was a stain on his gleaming Hollywood career. But despite the legal drama, Depp wouldn't change a thing. The Oscar-nominated actor reflected on the 2022 court battle in an interview with The Sunday Times published June 21. "Look, none of this was going (to) be easy, but I didn't care," he told the British outlet. "I thought, 'I'll fight until the bitter (expletive) end.' And if I end up pumping gas? That's all right. I've done that before." Depp sued Heard in 2019, claiming she defamed him in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed in which she said she was a victim of domestic abuse without specifically naming him. Heard was granted a temporary restraining order against the actor in May 2016, just days after filing for divorce, alleging Depp physically abused her various times during their 15-month marriage. As for their trial, a Virginia jury in 2022 awarded Depp more than $10 million in damages following six weeks of widely watched testimony, during which both parties and witnesses testified about alleged abuse throughout the couple's tumultuous relationship. "Look, it had gone far enough," Depp, 62, continued. "If I don't try to represent the truth it will be like I've actually committed the acts I am accused of. And my kids will have to live with it. Their kids. Kids that I've met in hospitals. So the night before the trial in Virginia I didn't feel nervous. If you don't have to memorize lines, if you're just speaking the truth? Roll the dice."
