Chennai Bulls produce come back for ages, defeat Bengaluru Bravehearts in RPL
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 21 (ANI): The Chennai Bulls returned to winning ways during Season 1 of the Rugby Premier League, as they overcame a 17-point difference to win 31-24 against the Bengaluru Bravehearts, here at the Shahaji Raje Bhosale Sports Complex (Andheri Sports Complex), on Saturday evening.
The Chennai Bulls drew first blood on the night as Joseva Talacolo went over the line at a good pace, and Joaquin Pellandini converted from close range. The Bulls, who had started the season brightly, were looking to return to winning ways, but the Bravehearts, who had defeated them in the return fixture, were up for the challenge.
Philip Wokorach and Tone Shiu scored a couple of tries each while Akuila Rokolisoa converted his kicks as the Bravehearts roared back and stormed into the lead. At half-time, the Bravehearts led 24-7.
In the next four minutes, the contest turned on its head - Terry Kennedy and Joseva Talacolo added a try each for the Bulls, and Filipe Sauturaga was on hand to convert his kicks. With a quarter to go, the Bulls led by 2.
Vaafauese Maliko got himself on the scoresheet in the final few minutes as the Bulls ensured the comeback would not be thwarted. Eventually, the Bulls walked off with all the points in their bag.
Earlier in the tournament, Chennai Buls and the Kalinga Black Tigers played out an absolute thriller, which ended 26-26. It was the Kalinga Black Tigers, who were out of the blocks the fastest, with Perry Baker getting the first try of the game, and Maurice Longbottom promptly converted too. After that, the Chennai Bulls equalised Joaquin Pellandini's try and kick.
That was the lull before the storm, as the Tigers went through the gears before half-time. Kyle Tremblay and James Thiel added a try each, and Longbottom managed to convert another kick. Just before the break, Aryan Dixit scored a try for the Bulls, as both teams took a breather with seven points between them. Early in the second half, the Bulls levelled things up with Filipe Sauturaga scoring a try and converting as well.
In the final quarter, though, the Kalinga Black Tigers surged ahead as Ajay Deswal bagged a try and Longbottom, once again, put in between the poles. Just as the Kalinga Black Tigers looked set for their first win of the season, Vaafauese Maliko scored a try and Joaquin Pellandini converted his kick from the wing, to ensure the Bulls would not lose the game. In the second game of the day, the Mumbai Dreamers, who had an impressive lead at one stage, squandered their position and had to share the spoils with the Kalinga Black Tigers, here in Mumbai, at the Shahaji Raje Bhosale Sports Complex, on Sunday evening, during Season 1 of the GMR Rugby Premier League, according to a release from RPL. In the first game of the day, the Bengaluru Bravehearts brought the Hyderabad Heroes' winning streak to a halt, defeating them 26-21. The Bengaluru Bravehearts hit the ground running, and how. International stars Akuila Rokolisoa and Philip Wokorach combined well. While Rokolisoa added a try and a conversion, Wokorach scored a try, giving the Bravehearts a 12-0 lead. The Delhi Redz, who have had a recent uptick in their fortunes, started off the game in solid fashion. Strong and compact in defensive set-ups, and robust in attack, the Redz picked up the early lead through Matteo Graziano's try and Matias Osadczuk's corresponding conversion. However, the Bulls began to show glimpses of their old form again, as Vaafauese Maliko scored a couple of tries, to put his side in a slender 3-point lead at the half-time break. After the break, the Bulls decided to go through the gears, and Maliko completed a hat-trick of tries. Filipe Sauturaga backed him up with clinical conversion, to give the Bulls a 10-point lead. Haakon Oess then added five more to the tally, and had Sauturaga scoring his conversion too, which helped the Bulls register a big win and return to the top of the points table. In the final game on Sunday, the Kalinga Black Tigers came from behind to clinch a 17-17 draw. The result gives the Mumbai Dreamers their first points of the season. The Kalinga Black Tigers had the better of the early exchanges on the night, as Asis Sabar scored a try and put them in the lead. However, the Mumbai Dreamers, who were still looking for their first points in the season, first equalised through Elias Hancock's try, and then Waisea Nacuqu made the conversion count. The two sides broke for half-time, with two points separating them. Vuiviawa Naduvalo and Henry Hutchison scored two brilliant tries for the Dreamers in the next quarter, which extended their lead to a 12-point one. The Tigers had their task cut out, and they responded with a try and conversion from Ethan Turner. Heartbreak for Prince Khatri as ACL tear rules him out of RPL
Mumbai: In a major blow to Hyderabad Heroes and Indian rugby fans alike, star player Prince Khatri has been ruled out for the remainder of the inaugural Rugby Premier League (RPL) 2025 season following a Grade 3 ACL tear. The injury occurred during the team's season opener against Kalinga Black Tigers in the third match of the tournament. The 31-year-old from Haryana, the second costliest Indian signing at this year's auction, sustained the injury during the second half of the fixture held at Mumbai's Andheri Sports Complex. After an awkward landing while attempting a tackle, Khatri clutched his knee in pain and was stretchered off the field.
