We here at Digital Trends always keep our eye on the three leading TV brands. In no particular order, we're talking about Sony, Samsung, and LG, but today, we'd like to focus the spotlight on the company that's had its foot in the TV game the longest: Sony. If you haven't heard, this week the manufacturer has discounted every size of its popular Bravia 7 Series QLED, including the 55-inch version.
Purchase at Best Buy, Crutchfield, Walmart, and a handful of other retailers, and you'll take home the 55-inch Sony Bravia 7 QLED for only $1,300. The full MSRP on this set is $1,600.

We tested the Bravia 7 back in November 2024, and editor at large Caleb Denison said, 'The Bravia 7 has insanely great picture quality.' When it comes to picture processing and upscaling, it's tough to beat the power and performance of Sony's Cognitive XR processor. The Bravia 7 delivers excellent picture quality and intense SDR brightness levels. Viewers can also expect a wide color gamut with rich, lifelike tones and a solid contrast ratio. While the viewing angle and glare reduction could be a bit better, neither minor issue is enough of a deterrent for us.
The Bravia 7 features HDMI 2.1 connectivity on ports 3 and 4, as well as VRR and ALLM support, making it a great choice for console and PC gamers. The TV has a native 120Hz refresh rate and fast response time, too, so you shouldn't see any motion blur when watching or playing fast-moving content. We're also glad to report that the TV supports every HDR format except HDR10+.
Apps, casting, and smart home controls have been made possible by Google TV OS, Sony's choice for UI and web-connected features for the last several years. We wish the Bravia 7 would stay on sale forever, but chances are it'll be back to full price before we know it. So, go ahead and save yourself $300 when you purchase the Sony 55-inch Bravia 7 Series 4K QLED today!

Recruiter Hays warns global slump in hirings will halve its profits

A slump in hiring activity at businesses around the world means profits will more than halve at Hays, the global recruitment company has warned, sending its shares down more than 10%. Demand for new permanent staff has fallen sharply, reflecting 'low levels of client and candidate confidence as a result of macroeconomic uncertainty', Hays told investors in an unscheduled update. The recruiter, which finds workers across the world for corporations such as Airbus and Sony, now expects its pre-exceptional operating profit to be about £45m for its current financial year, compared with City expectations of £56.4m. Last year Hays reported a profit of £105.1m. Analysts at the broker RBC Capital Markets said in a note: 'This is not wholly unsurprising given the enhanced macro-political uncertainty, and the fact that new job inflow is reducing … it is clear that a recovery is unlikely anytime soon.' Hays said it expected like-for-like net fees to be down 9% in the final quarter of its financial year. Fees from the permanent job market were expected to drop by 14%, with temporary and contracting work down 5%. Shares in Hays fell by as much as 20% in early trading on Thursday, sending it to the bottom of the FTSE 250 index of medium-sized companies and to its lowest level in 13 years. The shares pared back the loss over the course of the morning, trading down 11% by midday. The warning also pushed shares in the rival recruiter PageGroup, which generates just under three-quarters of its fees from permanent hiring, down by 8%. Shares in its Dutch rival Randstad also dropped by 4% in early trading. Hays said that in Germany, which made up about two-thirds of the company's operating profit in 2024, temporary hiring was also affected because of its high exposure to the car industry. The sector was already struggling, with profit warnings at BMW and Mercedes and moves to shut factories at Volkswagen, and has been hit further this year by the uncertainty around US trade tariffs. Hays said it expected net fees to drop 13% in the UK and Ireland, and by 9% in Australia and New Zealand. This month, official figures showed that more than 250,000 jobs have been lost in Britain since Rachel Reeves's autumn budget. Separate figures from the Office for National Statistics showed that the UK unemployment rate rose to 4.6% in the three months to April, up from 4.5% in the previous three-month period, to reach the highest level since July 2021.

PlayStation boss Hermen Hulst wants to develop Astro Bot into an enduring series, calling it one of the consoles "most exciting recent successes"

PlayStation boss Hermen Hulst has praised Astro Bot, calling it one of PlayStation's "most exciting recent successes." Astro Bot was a breath of fresh air for Sony's first-party output which has been relegated to cinematic third-person action games for the longest time, and embodied the spirit of Japan Studio (it getting shut down is probably the biggest blunder of Sony's 2020s, if you ask me). Since then the game has become one of the most beloved platformers of all time, winning Game of the Year at the BAFTAs and The Game Awards. Sony Interactive Entertainment's business group CEO Hermen Hulst gives the game praise during a recent video presentation (via Genki_JPN). During the talk, he calls Astro Bot one of PlayStation's "most exciting recent successes." Hulst adds: "Astro Bot was a smash hit, achieving universal acclaim among players and critics and sweeping industry award shows." When speaking about growing game IP into franchises, Astro Bot is listed as an "emerging IP," hopefully meaning that we should be getting more Astro in the future, (thankfully). Hopefully the success of Astro Bot shows PlayStation the value in having franchises that don't quite fit into that prestige AAA mold or the live service world. After Japan Studio was shuttered in 2021, it meant the studio which were constantly pumping out unique games and ideas were all but gone (the studio was merged into Team Asobi). But, in an era where big Sony series are taking longer to come out (the PS5 generation will probably almost be over by the time the next Naughty Dog game releases), little games like Ape Escape, Gravity Rush, and Patapon would go down a treat. Sony is "really thoughtful" about bringing PlayStation franchises like God of War and The Last of Us off console, and PS5 games going to PC is a matter of "if", not when.
