
Pushing steel bridge over railway line for Indrali RoB in Udupi complete
The National Highways division of Karnataka Public Works Department achieved a major milestone, albeit with much delay, after it installed a bow string steel bridge atop the Mangaluru-Mumbai railway line at Indrali in Udupi for the additional Railway Over Bridge on Malpe-Tirthahalli National Highway 169A on May 13.
Pushing the structure atop the railway line using hydraulic jacks began on May 12 morning with the task getting completed in about 36 hours. The Konkan Railway Corporation Limited gave periodical line and power blocks to facilitate pushing of the structure on the girders placed over bridge cribs.
The NH-PWD has commenced lowering the steel bridge by removing bridge cribs gradually to bring the structure to the road level. Both the ends of the steel bridge would be placed on concrete embankments on the sides of the railway track, said a senior NH-PWD engineer. The process might take about 8-10 days, he added.
Once the bow string steel bridge is securely placed at its location, the department would put concrete on the bridge surface. The additional RoB between Udupi and Manipal should be ready to take vehicular traffic before the end of May, the engineer added.
The department used hydraulic jacks, girders and rails atop the cribs to push the 12 metre wide, 58 metre long and about 476-tonne pre-assembled bridge inch-by-inch.

Sensing an abnormal delay from KRCL in permitting pushing of the structure despite the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) of the Indian Railways certifying the structure, Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Kota Srinivas Poojary had on May 10 petitioned Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to intervene. Thereafter, KRCL permitted pushing of the structure on May 12.
As the additional RoB construction on the busy Udupi-Manipal four-lane road was being delayed since 2018, Mr. Poojary feared that the work might get further delayed if the rains start. He stayed at the location on May 12 night to oversee the work. The Indrali stretch of NH169A had become an accident-prone spot with the general public and organisations coming down heavily on the administration for the enormous delay in completion of the additional RoB.

The criticism about the project centres on two fronts -- environmentalists fear the project will severely impact the Doon valley's ecology, while social activists warn of the large-scale displacement of residents once construction begins. The project also contradicts previous claims by the state govt to rejuvenate the rivers. Activists fear that such a large-scale infrastructure undertaking will leave no scope for restoration and could mark the end of these rivers. They are demanding transparency, environmental safeguards, and clear rehabilitation policies before work starts on the elevated road network. "There is both curiosity and concern among residents across Dehradun about the elevated roads being built over the fragile riverbeds of Rispana and Bindal," said social activist Anoop Nautiyal. "With pillars up to 15 metres high, this corridor risks permanently changing the city's ecological fabric. We're demanding that the Environmental Impact Assessment report be made public so that citizens can engage meaningfully and assess the true costs." Activists also called for public involvement in planning major infrastructure projects, especially those that claim to serve public interest. "There is often a stark contrast between govt claims and ground realities," said Manoj Dewaria, a resident of Kanwali Road. "They say it's to ease traffic, but what about the thousands of families whose future now hangs in the balance? There's been no talk of compensation or rehabilitation. What kind of public policy is this?" With project details still unclear, activists have filed several RTIs, but responses have been vague. One such reply from the PWD, accessed by TOI, stated: "In light of increasing traffic pressure in Dehradun and unavailability of space for road widening, the construction of the Rispana-Bindal elevated corridor is proposed. This will provide relief from traffic congestion in Dehradun. The project is under process and until its completion, specific details cannot be provided. "

Over 4,100 Trees In Nagpur Found Choked, Just 1,100 Freed So Far: NMC to HC
1 2 Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Thursday informed the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court that over 4,147 trees across the city were found choked by concrete, but only 1,104 were de-choked so far despite directives and multiple agency involvement. The data was submitted during the hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL No. 39/2024) filed by environmental activists Sharad Patil, Prachi Mahurkar, Yash Netke, and Preeti Patel through counsel Radhika Bajaj. As per petitioners, while executing road improvement projects, the work of concretisation by cement, asphalt, or bitumen is choking roots of trees. They claimed though administrative instructions are issued to the contractors and subordinate officers to ensure removal of concrete, asphalt, or bitumen near trees, effective steps are not being taken by respondents. NMC counsel Jemini Kasat submitted the affidavit and minutes of meetings with agencies such as NHAI, NIT, and PWD, confirming the extent of choking and partial progress on relief efforts. Kasat told the court two experts—Kaustav Chatterjee of Green Vigil Foundation and Dilip Chinchmalatpure—were included in official de-choking panel as per court's earlier order.
