Big Ten Spotlight: Three programs on a roll in recruiting

Yahoo18-03-2025

The calendar has turned to spring and there are several programs across the country that are riding a wave of momentum in recruiting. Rivals national recruiting analyst Greg Smith looks at three such programs in the Big Ten.

Coach Bret Bielema and his program have had a strong offseason recruiting in the 2026 class. The program is coming off a double-digit win season and bowl game win over an SEC foe. So the question was if Illinois would be able to keep it rolling and see the benefits in recruiting.
So far, so good.
The program is sitting at No. 9 in the Rivals Team Recruiting Rankings at the moment due to a surge of verbal commits. The formula seems to be clear. Load up on good regional talent and then pluck some standouts from Florida.
The Illini have a pledge from versatile Ohio four-stars Cam Thomas and Victor Singleton. They've gone down to Florida to land four-star quarterback Michael Clayton and three-star wide receiver Kenyon Alston.

It's not hyperbole to say there might not be a program in the country that fits the 'on fire' category more than USC. The Trojans totally revamped their recruiting department and it's given the team a lot of juice on the recruiting trail. They picked up five commitments for 2026 during the winter months, most notably from still-rising four-star quarterback Jonas Williams. Getting the face of the recruiting class to flip from rival Oregon was a huge deal.
That momentum hasn't slowed down as spring approaches. USC has picked up four commitments in March as spring football gets underway. The team has several blue-chip prospects slated to visit campus between now and June. With the way things are going the Trojans will push for a top-five recruiting class this cycle.
USC feels 'back.' At least on the recruiting trail.

The Huskies have been a sneaky surprise the last couple months. They pulled off a major recruiting win, landing four-star Ksani Jiles, a one-time Miami commit who had options all around the country. Keeping three-star defensive back Elijah Burr home was also a nice win for the program.
But another big thing the Huskies have going right now is momentum behind the scenes. Recruits have been buzzing about their visits to check out the program under coach Jedd Fisch. The team is in the thick of several high-profile recruitments including five-star quarterback Brady Smigiel, four-star running back Deshonne Redeaux and four-star defensive end Anthony Jones.
The Huskies have a path to being one of the biggest surprises of the cycle in the conference.

Angel Reese's Teammate Shows Bus Video of Chicago Sky Star After Triple-Double Game

Angel Reese's Teammate Shows Bus Video of Chicago Sky Star After Triple-Double Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Angel Reese stepped up big time on Sunday to lead the Chicago Sky to their third win of the season and first against a team not named Dallas Wings. Advertisement The 23-year-old forward recorded her first career triple-double in the Sky's 78-66 victory over the Connecticut Sun, finishing with 11 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists. She also had three steals and two blocks in a true all-around effort. Reese became just the second player to have a triple-double this season, joining Caitlin Clark who did it against the Sky in the season opener. Following Reese's performance and the Sky's win, the team made sure to celebrate her, even giving the WNBA All-Star a water bottle shower in the locker room. Reese's teammates also heaped praise on her, with guard Rachel Banham taking to social media to hype her up, calling her "My triple double [queen]." Advertisement What stood out from Banham's post about Reese, however, was the video she accompanied her message with. The clip showed the second-year player in the team bus, and as Banham focused the phone camera on her, Reese gave a salute and playfully wobbled her head — clearly having fun. For what it's worth, even the WNBA was full of praise for Angel Reese after her performance on Sunday. Not only did the league call her "TRIPLE-DOUBLE BARBIE," but it also put the spotlight on her complete performance. "Angel Reese put together a COMPLETE performance vs. the Sun to record her first career TRIPLE-DOUBLE," the WNBA wrote in a social media post, which also featured her stats from the game and some highlights. Chicago Sky forward Angel Krzaczynski-Imagn Images The Sky will play the Washington Mystics next on Tuesday. Sure enough, it will be interesting to see if Reese will be able to deliver another big game for Chicago as the team looks to turn its fortunes around. Cal Raleigh connects for 31st homer for the Seattle Mariners

CHICAGO — Seattle Mariners slugger Cal Raleigh hit his major league-leading 31st homer when he went deep in the first inning of Sunday's game against the Chicago Cubs. Raleigh hammered the first pitch of his at-bat against Colin Rea — a 93.8 mph fastball — for a two-run shot on a hot afternoon at Wrigley Field. The massive drive to center had an exit velocity of 105 mph. It was Raleigh's fourth homer of the weekend series and his fifth in his last five games. He snapped a tie for third for the most homers in franchise history before the All-Star break. The switch-hitting Raleigh was the designated hitter for the Mariners for the series finale after he was behind the plate on Saturday. Raleigh also walked in the third and singled and scored in the fifth. ___ AP MLB:

Angel Reese Makes Unfortunate History After Filing 'Mebounds' Trademark

Angel Reese Makes Unfortunate History After Filing 'Mebounds' Trademark originally appeared on The Spun. WNBA star Angel Reese made unfortunate career history after filing her "mebounds" trademark. The Chicago Sky star forward has been up and down to start the 2025 season. Reese, a first round pick out of LSU in 2024, had a strong rookie season, averaging 13 points and 13 rebounds per game. However, she struggled out of the gates in 2025, averaging 9 points and 11 rebounds through the first month-plus of the season, while shooting 30 percent from the field. Reese has turned it on lately, though. She's averaging 11 points and 11 rebounds per game while shooting closer to 40 percent from the field. Reese recorded her first triple double earlier this month, too. The Baltimore, Maryland native then filed for a "Mebounds" trademark, playing on how many boards she gets. But while Reese filed for the "Mebounds" trademark earlier this month, she made unfortunate WNBA history during Saturday's loss to the Phoenix Mercury. The Sky fell to the Mercury, 107-86, in a Saturday afternoon loss. During the game, Reese tied her career low for rebounds in a game. She also played a career low in minutes with just 21. It's been a disappointing start to the 2025 season for the Chicago Sky, who dropped to 3-9 on the year with Saturday's blowout loss to the Phoenix Mercury. The standout WNBA forward will look to improve on her consistency moving forward.
