Department of Environment cracks down on Kulim chicken plant over pollution, demands immediate corrective action

Kedah DOE director Sharifah Zakiah Syed Sahab said the action was taken under Section 38 (1)(a) of the Environmental Quality Act (EKA) 1974 following a complaint regarding the odour pollution by the factory. She said acting on the complaint, A DOE team went to the factory location and the results of the investigation found that the foul odour pollution was from a pile of chicken slaughter waste and chicken cages kept there. 'The factory was imposed the POK action for failing to provide an industrial effluent treatment system at its premises,' she said in a statement today. Sharifah Zakiah said that with the POK action, the factory is required to take immediate action to stop the pollution. 'A notice under Sections 31 and 37 of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 has been issued to the factory, requiring immediate repair and maintenance work during the POK enforcement period. The factory will only be permitted to resume operations once the Kedah DOE is satisfied with the corrective actions taken. 'The industry is reminded to always comply fully with the Environmental Quality Act 1974 and regulations under it, and to ensure that no environmental pollution is caused,' she added. Operations ongoing to douse massive blaze at Kota Puteri storage yard
JOHOR BARU: Firefighters are continuing efforts to extinguish a massive blaze at a logistics depot cum storage yard in the Kota Puteri Industrial Park, near Taman Megah Ria in Masai, which broke out yesterday afternoon. The fire, which started at 12.45pm, has caused extensive damage, destroying three factories and 15 vehicles, including a used engine oil storage facility, a soap processing plant, and a lorry parking lot. While no casualties have been reported, a firefighter sustained injuries during the operation and is reported to be in stable condition. State Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Sarhan Akmal Mohamad said the site had been divided into two zones, namely Division 1 and Division 2, to optimise firefighting efforts. "Division 1 was successfully extinguished by 4am today, but operations in Division 2 are ongoing. "Thick smoke and large fuel containers have made access challenging," he said. Sarhan added that about 60 per cent of the 700 by 700 square foot site had been destroyed. Strong winds had accelerated the spread of flames from active storage areas to adjacent non-operational zones. Firefighters deployed six hose lines, drawing water from hydrants and tanker engines, and used 50 foam canisters to suppress the oil-fed flames. A Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) team was dispatched at 11.40pm to assess air quality using a Gasmet FTR detector. Preliminary readings showed trace amounts of sulphur in the air, though not at hazardous levels. Responders were advised to wear personal protective equipment, including masks and respirators. Solid material samples were also collected for further testing. Meanwhile, Johor Department of Environment (DoE) director Dr Mohd Famey Yusoff confirmed that ongoing monitoring at three key locations near the industrial park detected no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can pose health risks. "VOCs were not detected at SK Seri Kota Puteri, the Jalan Kempas 12 fire control post, or a nearby logistics company. "Ammonia levels were found at the fire control post but remain below the AEGL2 threshold," he said. AEGL2 refers to the concentration of a substance that may cause serious or irreversible health effects. Dr Famey assured the public that current air quality does not pose an immediate health threat. However, DoE officers will continue monitoring the area to ensure safety. The incident has raised concerns about industrial safety and environmental impact, with authorities pledging to provide updates once the fire is fully extinguished.

Only two Apas Rumah Mesra not ready yet

TAWAU: Only two out of 60 Rumah Mesra SMJ allocated for the Apas state constituency between 2022 and 2024 have yet to be completed, due to technical issues such as land ownership and site conditions. However, Assemblyman Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan expressed confidence these two homes would be completed soon, once the related issues are resolved. He said the delay was caused by technical challenges, including land ownership and uneven terrain, which posed difficulties as the construction of SMJ homes requires level land or modifications to the site. Nizam was speaking to the media after handing over house keys to recipients in Kg Kuala Balung, Kg Inderasabah, Kg Wakuba and Kg Sungai Gading. He said over the past two years, a total of 58 SMJ homes in Apas had been fully completed, with most recipients already receiving their keys, which he personally handed over. He extended his gratitude to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor for the initiative, saying the Rumah Mesra SMJ programme had greatly benefited those in need, particularly the B40 group. On behalf of the people of Apas, I thank the Chief Minister for his concern and commitment to launching this initiative,' he said. Among the recipients was single mother of three, Norliza Suliman, who expressed her gratitude upon receiving her house key during Nizam's ground visit. She said although she had land, she had not been able to build a home due to financial difficulties, compounded by the rising cost of building materials. Fuel tanker catches fire near Taman Indah Permai

The Fire and Rescue Department received the emergency call at 11.31pm and arrived at the scene by 11.49pm, with the fire brought under control within 17 minutes. Advertisement No casualties were reported, but about 30 per cent of the tanker was damaged, with 30 personnel from Kota Kinabalu and Lintas fire stations deployed. The team used water tankers, foam, hose reels, and a thermal imaging camera to safely cool the tank and ensure no risk of reignition.
