Council leader backs plans to expand city boundary
Nottingham City Council leader Neghat Khan has supported proposals to merge the authority with two Nottinghamshire neighbouring councils.
The Labour politician set out her thoughts on the future political map of the city and neighbouring county at a council meeting on Monday night.
The government plans to streamline local government and have a mayor for every region of England.
Councils have been given until 21 March to submit interim proposals ahead of final plans being lodged in November.
Khan said she was in favour of the so-called "Nottingham + 2" model which could see the city form a new combined authority with either Broxtowe Borough Council and Gedling Borough council or, alternatively, join with Broxtowe and Rushcliffe Borough Council.
In either case, the remaining five Nottinghamshire districts could be joined together to form a second single-tier authority.
A third option has been proposed which would see the city council remain within its current boundaries and the eight other districts form one authority.
Khan said: "Nottingham is a significantly under-bounded local authority, covering a population of 328,000 at the centre of a built-up area of well over 750,000 - and a wider county population of 1.17 million.
"We are responsible for delivering the services expected in a core city, but many of the people who work in the city, and use council services currently live in the suburbs, meaning they can't vote in city elections, and pay council tax elsewhere.
"We need to address that imbalance."
She added: "While this process has been understandably emotive, Nottingham has remained silent on preferred options, as our approach has been to take an objective view of the data, with a genuine interest in what is best for the people, and the delivery of services.
"At this point we believe that the most sustainable model would be two new unitaries, likely meaning a new authority that combines Nottingham City Council with any two of Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe."
She also said she would be open to other "Nottingham + 2" models, yet to be explored, subject to any feedback from the government.
Ashfield District Council and Mansfield District Council were due to meet on Monday to debate their preferred options for the future.
Bassetlaw District Council is set to meet later on Tuesday with the remaining districts and borough discussing the issue at meetings later this week.

Ousted Dem ‘super mayor' charges whopping price tag for tell-all book while dodging legal troubles
The embattled former Chicago suburb 'super mayor' has announced her latest business venture as her legal woes continue to pile up following a tumultuous time in office. Tiffany Henyard, the former Democratic mayor of Dolton, has announced she is peddling a 'tell-all' autobiography, titled 'Standing on Business.' In a Facebook post, the disgraced politician vowed 'the real story is coming' while sharing a link to pre-order the book – which boasts a price tag of $99 and is reportedly the first of a three-part series – from a self-publishing website. 'From mommy moves to making history, [Henyard] is not just showing up,' she wrote. 'She's standing on business.' However, the former mayor's constituents appeared less than pleased, taking their opinions online to voice their skepticism of Henyard's latest business venture. 'Still trying to hustle money!' one commenter said in the Dolton Politics Facebook Page. 'Michelle Obama's bestseller was cheaper than this mess,' another poster wrote. 'The unmitigated gal!' Henyard's attorneys did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment. Henyard's announcement comes as she faces several legal woes stemming from her time as Dolton mayor and Thornton Township supervisor after her reelection bid proved unsuccessful. 3 Former Dolton mayor Tiffany Henyard announced on Facebook that she is writing an autobiography titled, 'Standing on Business.' FOX News The lawsuit was initially filed by the Edgar County Watchdogs Inc. in response to the organization suing Henyard and the Village of Dolton for failing to produce financial records after the documents were requested under federal FOIA laws. 'We had little doubt Ms. Henyard would use losing the election as an excuse not to produce the documents,' Edward 'Coach' Weinhaus, attorney for Edgar County Watchdogs, previously said in a statement to Fox News Digital. 'Invoking the Fifth Amendment for a criminal investigation was an added wrinkle. The Watchdogs will keep looking for the documents even if the voters might have inadvertently thrown out the documents with the mayor.' Henyard initially made national headlines in April 2024 after officials in her administration were served with subpoenas from the FBI in response to an alleged corruption investigation, FOX 32 Chicago reported. Henyard, however, was never charged. In response to the FBI's investigation, village trustees voted to hire former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightful to investigate Henyard's spending during her time as mayor, with the meeting spiraling into chaos as Henyard's supporters clashed with her opponents. The financial probe reportedly revealed the village's bank account fell from its initial $5.6 million balance to a $3.6 million deficit. Earlier this year, Henyard subsequently lost the city's mayoral primary to Jason House, who was sworn into office in May. On the same day of her election loss, federal authorities slapped the Village of Dolton with a subpoena demanding records tied to a land development project allegedly tied to Henyard's boyfriend. Russian activist who helped Ukrainian refugees jailed for 22 years
A Russian activist who helped Ukrainians flee Moscow's invasion has been sentenced to 22 years in prison on charges of treason and financing terrorism, her lawyer and Russian media said Friday. Nadezhda Rossinskaya, who also goes by the name Nadin Geisler, ran a volunteer group called 'Army of Beauties," which claims to have helped evacuate thousands of people from Russian-occupied territory — numbers that could not be independently verified. Some made their way to free Ukraine through Russia's southwestern Belgorod region, where the last open checkpoint between the two countries was located, the group says. Fearing for her safety, Rossinskaya left Russia for Georgia in 2023, but decided to return to Belgorod months later to coordinate a complex evacuation, independent Russian news outlets reported. She was detained in February 2024 over an Instagram post calling for donations to Ukrainian forces, and was later charged with treason and financing terrorism, according to Russian court documents and her lawyer Alexey Pryanishnikov. Rossinskaya denied any wrongdoing, and her lawyer said she did not write or publish the post, according to a trial transcript compiled by Russian independent outlet Mediazona. Prosecutors had requested an unusually harsh prison sentence of 27 years for Rossinskaya, who stood trial at a military court in Belgorod. According to Mediazona, Rossinskaya responded by asking the court to jail her for 27 years and one day if found guilty, so that her prison term could be the longest modern Russia has ever handed to a woman. Darya Trepova, jailed for delivering a bomb in 2023 that killed a pro-war blogger in St Petersburg, is currently serving a 27-year sentence. Last September, Rossinskaya was added to Russia's register of 'extremists and terrorists', alongside many individuals and groups who have publicly criticized the war, tried to raise money for Ukraine or help those affected by the fighting. Criminal cases linked to treason, espionage and cooperation with a foreign state have risen drastically since Russia's full-scale invasion, a Russian lawyers' association has reported. According to Pervy Otdel, at least 792 people went on trial on related charges between Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022 and late December 2024. Over 530 were convicted.
