Sibanye says 289 workers trapped in South African gold mine

JOHANNESBURG : South Africa's Sibanye Stillwater said on Friday that efforts were under way to rescue 289 mine workers trapped underground at one of its shafts at the Kloof gold mine near Johannesburg.
The workers were safe and gathered at an assembly point in the underground gold mine, one of the company's deepest, located around 60km west of Johannesburg, it said.
It did not provide details on the incident, though a Sibanye spokesperson confirmed it had occurred in the mine's Kloof 7 shaft, adding that all the miners were accounted for and the company was providing them with food.
Safety procedures and an examination of the shaft were under way, the spokesperson added, after which the miners would be hoisted to the surface.
'We expect the situation to be resolved by about midday today,' the spokesperson said.
Mining accidents are not uncommon in South Africa, which has some of the world's deepest and oldest gold mines.
Earlier this year, at least 78 bodies were pulled from an illegal gold mine after police cut off food and water supplies for months in an attempt to crack down on illegal mining activity.
Johannesburg-based Sibanye is among only a few South African miners squeezing profits from the area's gold deposits. The precious metals producer is mining at depths of about 3,200m at the Kloof 7 shaft.
The Kloof mine, which accounts for 14% of Sibanye's total gold output, also operates two other shafts.
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) earlier said it had received reports of the incident, which it said happened at around 10pm (0800 pm GMT) on Thursday.

'It is time for Sabah to strengthen its standards of governance with greater credibility and integrity,' he said. Yesterday, Azam said he would make an announcement soon about the 'one or two individuals' to be charged in court in connection with the alleged mining scandal. On June 6, a source from MACC said the investigation papers had been completed and submitted to the Attorney-General's Chambers two weeks earlier and that several individuals could be charged.

MACC chief: One or two suspects to be charged soon in Sabah mining scandal
KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has confirmed that one or two individuals will soon be charged in court over the alleged mining scandal in Sabah. Speaking at a press conference after an MACC event, Azam said an official announcement would be made shortly on the individuals to be prosecuted. 'I will make an announcement very soon about the one or two individuals to be charged in court,' he said. Earlier on June 6, MACC sources revealed that investigation papers had been completed and submitted to the Attorney General's Chambers, with several individuals identified as potential suspects. The alleged scandal surfaced in 2024 after leaked videos showed purported discussions involving bribery and misconduct related to mineral exploration projects in Sabah, implicating several state assemblymen. In a separate update, Azam said investigations into the alleged misappropriation of sukuk funds for a Klang Valley highway project are expected to conclude in one to two months, citing the need for detailed document and financial analysis. The probe recently saw MACC officers record a six-hour statement from a corporate figure with a 'Tan Sri' title, with questioning ongoing at the individual's Kuala Lumpur residence.

‘Blade runner' back in the race: Oscar Pistorius competes in Durban triathlon a year after parole for killing girlfriend
JOHANNESBURG, June 5 — South African former Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius was spotted competing in a triathlon last weekend in the coastal city of Durban, 12 years after murdering his girlfriend and a year after his release on parole. Afrikaans-language news website Netwerk24 on Wednesday reported Pistorius' participation in the Ironman 70.3 competition. Netwerk24 cited an unnamed source as saying that Pistorius had permission from his parole officer to compete. Conrad Dormehl, an attorney for Pistorius, confirmed to Reuters that Pistorius had participated in the Durban race.
