2 Gajapati men die during running test for home guard job
Berhampur: Two men died and six others had to be hospitalised during a physical test for the recruitment of home guards in Paralakhemundi, Gajapati district, on Thursday.
The deceased were identified as Sulant Mishal (24), a resident of Parisal village, and Deepak Padalu (27), a native of Narayanpur village.

This is the fifth casualty in the state during physical tests for govt jobs in the past two months.
Police said Mishal, a final year Plus III student, had completed a 2-kilometre run within 10 minutes and qualified for the next round of selection. However, minutes after finishing the test, he complained of uneasiness. He was rushed to the district headquarters hospital (DHH), where doctors declared him dead. Mishal's father had died some years back.
He was living with his mother, who works as a labourer.
"An autopsy was conducted, and the procedure was videographed in the presence of a magistrate. The cause of death will be known only after receiving the postmortem report," said Gajapati SP Jatindra Kumar Panda. Police suspect Mishal may have had some past ailments, which got aggravated during the running exercise.
Deepak, who had become unconscious after taking part in the running test, died at MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur.
Deepak and six other candidates who fell ill during the test were admitted to the DHH. Deepak was later shifted to Berhampur after his condition deteriorated in the afternoon. He died in the evening.
Though the exact cause of the death would be ascertained after postmortem, doctors suspected he died of heart attack. All those hospitalised complained of muscle cramps and body pain. Of the rest six, three were discharged and three were still in hospital.

Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh from the CM's Relief Fund to the next of kin of the deceased.
The recruitment test was part of a drive to fill 144 home guard posts in Gajapati. Over 1,700 candidates, including 300 women, participated in the physical test on Thursday. The female candidates ran in the first batch at 6.30 am, followed by male candidates in groups of 300.
"We had advised candidates not to take part in the test if they felt unwell.
Advance notices had been issued on this matter," said SP Panda.
On March 5, two engineering graduates — Byomkesh Naik of Keonjhar and Prabin Kumar Panda of Sundargarh — died during a 25-kilometre walking test for forest department recruitment. Another home guard aspirant collapsed and died during a running test in Deogarh on March 27.

TN health dept to set up 750-bed multi-specialty hospital in Chennai: Minister
Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian said on Sunday that the state government is set to establish a state-of-the-art 750-bed multispecialty paediatric hospital at the King Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research campus in Guindy. The new facility will be developed on six acres of land and will be attached to a postgraduate and super-specialty paediatric institute under the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. Once completed, it will become the third major healthcare institution on the Guindy campus, following the Kalaignar Centenary Super-speciality Hospital and the National Institute of Ageing. The state government has allocated Rs 487.66 crore for the project, which will include a seven-storey hospital complex covering 3.15 lakh square feet. In addition to the main hospital building, the project will feature hostels for doctors, nurses, medical students, and professors, along with advanced medical equipment and infrastructure. "This is the highest allocation made for any hospital project in Tamil Nadu till now," said Minister Subramanian during his visit to the site, accompanied by senior health officials, including Health Secretary P. Senthilkumar. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has given his approval for the project, and tenders will be floated shortly. The construction of the new hospital is expected to commence by September this year. The institute will be fully funded and operated by the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. The upcoming paediatric hospital will be equipped with 100 intensive care unit (ICU) beds, pay wards, shared wards, and suite rooms. According to University Vice-Chancellor K. Threefold increase in banana production in state: Govt
Patna: The state has recorded a threefold increase in banana production over the last two decades, thanks to the state's agriculture roadmap and adoption of tissue culture technology by the farmers. According to the state agriculture department, banana output rose from 5.45 lakh metric tonnes in 2004-05 to 19.68 lakh metric tonnes in 2022-23, marking a 261% increase. "The area under banana cultivation also expanded significantly, from 27,200 hectares in 2004-05 to 42,900 hectares in 2022-23, an increase of 58%," an official from the agriculture department said. Productivity too has more than doubled, growing from 20 metric tonnes per hectare to 45 metric tonnes, showing an increase of 125%. Encouraging the use of tissue culture in banana farming, the state govt also provides a 50% subsidy (Rs 62,500 per hectare) under its Phal Vikas Yojana. In the financial year 2024-25 alone, over 3,600 farmers have availed the benefits of the scheme. Uttarakhand gets state's first ‘yoga policy', CM Dhami announces ‘spiritual economic zones'
On the occasion of the 11th International Yoga Day, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami officially launched the state's first-ever Yoga Policy from Bhararisain, the state's summer capital. He declared, 'Uttarakhand will be developed as the global capital of yoga and wellness.' While delivering his message 'Yoga in Every Home, Health for Every Person,' Dhami spoke of the Central Government's support in the initiative and announced the establishment of a 'Spiritual Economic Zones' in Garhwal and Kumaon divisions. These zones will reportedly be developed as international hubs of ayurveda, yoga, and spiritual tourism, and will also facilitate employment in the state, helping to curb migration from the hill regions.
