Director and founder of Animal Aid Warriors, Naomi de Beer, was left in a wheelchair after suffering injuries from a recent fall, and she is now appealing to the community for help to get her back on her feet.

Last November, Naomi fell into a hole and damaged her left knee. Only three days later, she struggled to climb stairs, and eventually she had no other option but to use a wheelchair.
'I was in the hospital for a month, and the doctors could not give me any answers,' Naomi said.
Since Naomi could not use her legs anymore, she counted on her colleagues to manage the organisation that she usually ran. The team frequently informed her about the decisions they had to make.
'They kept the ball rolling, and I am forever grateful for their support. It is challenging to work behind the scenes, and I want to work hand in hand with my team in the field again. I know that is impossible as of now.
To run after dogs, climb trees to rescue cats and interact with sick animals in a wheelchair can be extremely frustrating; however, I am just glad I get to see the sun rise every day and see my family and colleagues,' Naomi expressed.
One of Naomi's biggest challenges is not being able to physically assist in helping animals in need. She is currently doing all of the administrative and marketing work for the NPO.
'Since my fall, a lot has changed. Our donations decreased. It is extremely difficult to organise fundraisers because I cannot monitor them. If we receive a call from someone interested in adopting one of our animals, I have to ask my team to do a home check, which I usually do by myself,' she stated.
MAD DOGS MC South Africa has decided to host a fundraiser to help Naomi receive help within the private sector, since she needs an MRI. This organisation aims to raise R45 740. If you have any enquiries about the fundraiser, contact Hennie on 066 329 9174.

Youth unites for heartfelt outreach initiative

ISIPINGO-BASED non-profit organisation Seva Bhakti Foundation, together with law enforcement, call on youth to join them as they venture out to the Durban CBD to hand out warm meals and beanies to at least 500 homeless individuals on Youth Day, June 16. Also read: Plumbers revamp Isipingo school's ablution facilities Seva Bhakti means 'to give back selflessly with love,' which according to Mandy Govender, one of the project's directors, describes the NPO's vision and team perfectly. 'We are inviting and encouraging young people to take part, not just by volunteering, but also by helping to raise funds and assisting in the preparation of food. As we mark a day that honours the strength and courage of South African youth, what better way to celebrate than by giving back? We want to help our youth understand the harsh realities of homelessness, and in doing so, foster compassion, gratitude, and purpose,' said Govender. She emphasised that the foundation hopes to show youth a better path than drugs and destructive choices. Youth from areas including Isipingo, Amanzimtoti, Bluff and Chatsworth are part of the outreach initiative. 'What I love most is seeing the youth come together with the same energy we had when we began our seva (selfless service) journey. I was just 19 when I started. We raised funds to help children, the elderly, and even cancer patients. Watching this next generation step up truly warms my heart,' added Govender. She urges parents to encourage their children to take part, youth to lead the charge with kindness and selflessness, and the community to support the initiative either by volunteering, donating or spreading the word. New clinic launched for taxi drivers in Orange Farm

NPO Rhiza Babuyile and the Gauteng health department have launched a new healthcare facility, Mpathy Clinic, in Orange Farm, Johannesburg, tackling health issues affecting taxi drivers. The clinic was launched in partnership with the Orange Farm United Taxi Association (Ofuta). Rhiza healthcare manager Lerato Seheri said the initiative was influenced by the difficulty taxi drivers face in going to clinics due to their tight schedules. 'Taxi drivers avoid going to a clinic because their working conditions don't allow them the time to wait in long queues,' Seheri said. 'With this new service, they'll get treatment fast. Quick in and out, no long lines. It's a quality service built around their reality. The clinic is tailor-made to suit their busy schedules and their pockets. It meets them where they are and provides them with care without disrupting their day.' The consultation fee will be between R100 and R300. Seheri said the initiative aligns with the government's 'Closing the Gap' Art Campaign, which aims to initiate and retain 1.1-million people on antiretroviral therapy (Art) by December to achieve the 95-95-95 HIV targets. Beyond HIV, she said the clinic would deal with general health issues affecting men. 'There's a broader challenge — men's health in general and how we link men to healthcare services effectively. Men are far less likely than women to engage routine health services and that gap often leads to late diagnoses of preventable or manageable conditions. With this clinic, we're addressing this gap.' HIV, Aids, sexually transmitted infections and TB (Hast) programme manager, Mmakobo Gaegake, shared Seheri's sentiments, emphasising the need for a healthcare facility for taxi drivers. 'The launch of the clinic in the taxi rank will assist in bringing health services to the busiest point in Orange Farm. Taxi drivers will work, access health services and continue with their day-to-day life. The clinic will promote healthy living in disadvantaged communities.' Ofuta welcomed the initiative. 'We're happy to see this clinic open. It's something our drivers have needed for a long time. They work long hours, always on the move, and often don't get the chance to look after their health. Rhiza Babuyile and the department of health heard and saw us and they delivered. This helps not just taxi drivers but everyone who counts on us to keep moving,' said the association's spokesperson Monty Motsopa.

The Shoprite Group has showcased the capabilities of the retail giant's newest addition to its network of 29 distribution centres across South Africa: the state-of-the-art Riverfields facility. Shoprite said there was no better time to show off the new facility with its Checkers' XXL Savings currently taking place. Shoprite said that this year's promotion promises to deliver over R45 million in savings to customers daily. "Last year's XXL campaign was a resounding success, moving an astonishing 3 million litres of milk, 55 tonnes of instant coffee, and 650 tonnes of cheese—enough dairy to outweigh three Boeing 747s. With an extensive range of new deals across key categories including groceries, baby products, general merchandise, and liquor, Shoprite aims to surpass the record volumes achieved in 2024," the group said. The centre's operational capacity allows for 220 trucks to be on-site at any given time, optimising logistics by shortening delivery routes, which in turn reduces transport costs and carbon emissions. Andrew Havinga, Chief Supply Chain Officer at Shoprite Group, highlighted the innovation behind their logistics. 'By optimising the distance between supplier, DC and store, we've created the shortest and most responsive supply chain in South Africa,' Havinga said. This efficient system is bolstered by real-time tracking, predictive analytics, and high-efficiency sortation technologies, ensuring customers receive the freshest and highest quality products daily. The Riverfields DC operates with an impressive selection of over 16,000 products, ranging from dry goods to perishables and convenience meals, including approximately 700 varieties of fresh fruit and vegetables. 'Riverfields was designed to support high-volume trading periods like the Checkers XXL promotion,' even as it lays the groundwork for the company's long-term commitment to infrastructure investment, enhanced supply chain capabilities, and job creation,' Havinga added. The introduction of the Riverfields DC has resulted in the creation of around 1,700 job opportunities, with 750 roles filled by local residents in a community grappling with an unemployment rate nearing 37%. The Shoprite Group's distribution centres across the country employ around 10,000 individuals, encompassing roles in warehousing, driving, and support services. As South Africa's retail landscape evolves, the Shoprite Group is poised to leverage technological advancements, operational efficiencies, and community engagement to redefine the shopping experience while supporting economic growth within its operating regions.
