Comrades Marathon: No deaths, avoid 'fake news'
There has been some widespread criticism of the chaotic, crowded and poorly controlled finish at the People's Park at the conclusion of Sunday's Comrades marathon.
Understandably, there was also widespread concern over the wellbeing of runner Moira Harding, who went missing after the event and is being treated in hospital after eventually being found unresponsive on Monday morning.
There have also been some rumours and reports of fatalities during the race, but these have been emphatically dismissed by the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) in a statement released this week.
'It has been brought to the attention of the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) that some digital media outlets or accounts are reporting two deaths during the 2025 edition of the race, which took place this past weekend (Sunday 8 June),' the statement read.
'The CMA and its medical team can confirm that no deaths have been recorded at the 2025 event.'
CMA General Manager Alain Dalais warned against taking 'fake news' as fact.
'As can be expected from an event of this nature and size, there were some cases of runners being transferred to hospital from the route, for various medical reasons. The CMA medical, emergency, safety and health protocols are excellent, and focused on the safety of all runners.
'The CMA distances itself from any fake news or rumours doing the rounds, and suggests that our community rely on reputable sources for information – starting with our own channels,' he adds.
Meanwhile, the latest update on the condition of Harding suggests she is still being treated in hospital for dehydration and hypothermia, and remains under sedation in order to allow her the best chance of a quick recovery.

Gauteng rolls out mobile clinics to fight measles outbreak
The Gauteng Department of Health has added seven new vehicles to its Integrated School Health Programme (ISHP) fleet in an effort to control a growing measles outbreak in the province. Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko officially handed over the mobile vaccination vehicles on Friday during a ceremony at Inxiweni Primary School in Tembisa. She said the department's focus on bringing services directly to children who need them most. 'This is more than a handover, it is a message to our young people that their health matters.,' said Nkomo-Ralehoko. ' We are taking services directly to schools, especially in underserved areas, to ensure every learner receives the care they need.' The ISHP teams, who will use the vehicles, will provide various services, including health screenings, immunisations, and health education, to school learners across the province. The new rollout comes amid rising concern over low immunisation coverage in key metros. According to the department, coverage for the second dose of the measles vaccine remains below 75% in Johannesburg and Tshwane, short of the 95% threshold needed to prevent outbreaks. 'These vehicles will help us reach more learners with lifesaving vaccines,' said the MEC. 'We must close the immunity gap and stop the spread of measles and rubella.' Nkomo-Ralehoko added that the expanded mobile services are a timely response to the current outbreak and a long-term investment in public health. By extending health services into schools, the department aims to reduce barriers to immunisation and catch up on missed vaccinations. The mobile units will enhance the province's ability to reach children in remote and under-resourced areas with limited clinic access. Three high-class Gupta mansions in Saxonwold, Johannesburg, will be up for auction on 24 July 2025. This follows the business rescue for the family's company, Confident Concept (Pty) Ltd, which the properties fall under. Park Village Auction's Clive Lazarus described the sale as signalling the 'beginning of the end' of the seven-year saga. The viewing of the properties, handled by Park Village Auctions, will be held between 6 and 20 July 2025. The first mansion will be the triple-storey residence at 5 Saxonwold Drive, featuring eight bedrooms, extensive living and entertainment areas, an indoor swimming pool, an expansive rooftop patio, staff accommodation, and ample garaging. Robbery suspect with toy gun shot dead by security officer in KZN
An off-duty security officer fatally shot a suspected robber who confronted him with a toy firearm in Ogunjini, KwaZulu-Natal, on Friday, 20 June. The security officer employed by a Durban-based company was returning home when a man approached him and drew what appeared to be a firearm, demanding his valuables. The officer responded by drawing his licensed 9mm pistol and firing two shots, striking the suspect in the chest. The wounded man dropped the weapon, later confirmed to be a toy and fled into nearby bushes, where he collapsed. Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a call for assistance at around 20:19. On arrival, officers found the suspect's body approximately five metres from the roadside. Officers recovered the toy firearm at the scene. The security officer told RUSA that four armed men robbed him on the same stretch of road a week earlier, taking his Samsung cellphone and wallet.
