Kiwi Aidan Copp sets world shearing record in South Africa
Aidan Copp, 39, has set a new nine-hour world record for Merino lambs.
A New Zealander has become the first shearer to set world records in three countries by establishing a new two-stand mark on Merino lambs over nine hours in South Africa overnight.
Aidan Copp, 39, joined 38-year-old South African shearer and contractor Tienie du Plessis in setting the tally of 970 at Teebus Waters, near Steynsburg, inland Eastern Cape, about 330km northwest of coastal city East London.
Copp grew up in West Melton, near Christchurch, but is based in New South Wales.
Copp, who has also set records in New Zealand and Australia, shore 523 and du Plessis shore 447.
The South African took up shearing full-time about 16 years ago after retiring from rugby with a fractured skull.

Thrashings continue for outmatched Auckland at cup
Auckland City suffered a second humbling defeat at the World Club Cup when they were trounced 6-0 by Benfica on Saturday. The Navy Blues capitulated in the second half after trailing the Portuguese side 1-0 at the interval, in a performance which followed up a 10-0 thrashing from German giants Bayern Munich in their opener. Jacob Douglas Targets Big Results At Road America After Dominant Test Pace
New Zealand's Jacob Douglas heads to Road America this weekend for what could be a pivotal round in the USF Pro 2000 Championship presented by Continental Tires, coming oƯ a dominant performance in pre-event testing. Driving for Pabst Racing, Douglas topped three of the six sessions and finished second in the others, becoming one of only two drivers to break the 2:01 barrier around the iconic 4.01-mile (6.45km), 14-turn circuit. Currently sitting fifth in the championship standings, Douglas has been one of the standout performers of 2025, with a maiden series victory at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a podium finish in St. Petersburg, and a string of top-five and top-ten finishes that have kept him within striking distance of the title contenders. With teammate Max Garcia leading the standings on 231 points, Douglas trails by 90 — but with 98 points on oƯer this weekend alone, the New Zealander is focused on closing the gap. 'We've made big gains all season in pace, consistency, and execution,' said Douglas. 'Now it's about putting that together. We know Road America suits us, and if we qualify well, we'll be right in the mix for the podium.' Douglas describes Road America as one of the best tracks in North America. 'It's fast, flowing, and super technical. It rewards confidence and commitment, and after how strong we were in testing, I'm coming into the weekend with a really positive mindset. The Wisconsin circuit holds special significance for Douglas, who scored his first-ever USF 2000 top-ten at the track in 2022 and returned in 2023 to take his maiden podium while debuting with Pabst Racing. 'I've always enjoyed racing here,' he added. 'There's just something about this place that clicks with me. The atmosphere, the challenge — it brings out the best in drivers. I've had some great memories here already, and now I want to add to them.' With just four race weekends remaining — all running on the support bill of the NTT IndyCar Series — Douglas and his team are pushing hard on all fronts, both on the track and oƯ it. While much of the season's backing is already in place, a final push is now critical to ensure the campaign can be completed in full. 'We've had amazing support so far, and I'm incredibly grateful for everyone who's been part of the journey,' said Douglas. Foxcroft heading back to CD
Dean Foxcroft has been careful not to burn any bridges with Otago. But he has cut ties with the Volts and signed with Central Districts. The decision was simple in the end. He believes his cricket will be better served in Napier than in Dunedin. "Obviously, the key thing is around having the guys around me that can make me a better player," Foxcroft told the Otago Daily Times . "I feel that can happen at Otago also, and it can happen at CD as well where I've got the likes of Tom Bruce and Will Young and all those experienced guys around me. "I'm pretty sure I can fit in with the CD team." Otago helped develop and support Foxcroft, and his decision to move on should not be seen as a negative reflection on the association, he said. The uncertainty around the Volts' coaching situation and the raft of recent departures did not play a part in his decision-making process. "No, no, it didn't. It's nothing to do with Otago or the change of coach or anything like that. "I just thought, personally, I'm keen on the move and to go and play where I started my cricket in New Zealand." Volts coach Ashley Noffke confirmed his departure earlier this month. He left with a year to run on his contract to pursue international opportunities. Noffke had replaced Dion Ebrahim, who also left a year into his two-year extension. Volts assistant Ben McCord left quietly towards the end of last season and has not spoken publicly about his departure. Leading Otago batter Dale Phillips is understood to be returning to Auckland, and former Canterbury batter Leo Carter is rumoured to be leaving Otago after just a year. It is a lot of change but there appears to be some help arriving. Central Districts opener Jack Boyle is understood to be transferring south to Otago, and Wellington middle-order batter Troy Johnson is another name linked with a move to the Volts. Foxcroft, a former South African under-19 representative, moved to New Zealand in 2018-19 to pursue an elite cricket career, and his first stop was with Central Districts. But he threw his kit bag in with Otago the following season and set himself the goal of qualifying for the Black Caps. He made an immediate impact for the Volts, performing strongly in the limited-overs formats. That season was cut short due to Covid. The star all-rounder returned to the republic to visit family and was unable to return when New Zealand closed its borders. Otago campaigned on his behalf to secure an exemption so he could return and take up his playing contract in 2021-22. They kept up the fight the following season but were unsuccessful and were unable to contract him for the 2022-23 season. When the border restrictions were lifted, Foxcroft made a triumphant return. The right-hander was impressive during the Super Smash, clobbering 424 runs at an average of 47.11. His deeds did not go unnoticed further up the chain. He was crowned domestic player of the year at the New Zealand Cricket Awards and earned a maiden call-up for the Black Caps. He made his debut for the Black Caps in a T20 against the UAE in Dubai in August 2023.
