Legendary dirt track racer Scott Bloomquist's fatal plane crash deemed an ‘act of suicide'
Dirt track racing legend Scott Bloomquist's death in a 2024 plane crash likely was caused by 'the pilot's intentional flight into a building as an act of suicide,' according to a report issued this week by the National Transportation Safety Board.
Bloomquist, a 2002 National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame inductee, was the pilot and sole occupant of a a two-seat 1938 Piper J3 aircraft that crashed into a barn on his family's property Aug. 16 in Mooresburg, Tenn. He was 60.
'The pilot departed from a private airstrip and overflew his property,' states the NTSB's aviation investigation final report, which does not mention Bloomquist by name. 'The airplane subsequently impacted a barn adjacent to the airstrip. The airplane sustained substantial damage, and the fuselage was mostly consumed by the postimpact fire that ensued.
'The pilot was fatally injured. ... The autopsy report listed the cause of death as blunt force injuries and the manner of death as suicide.'
According to the report, Bloomquist did not have a pilot's certificate.
Bloomquist's family issued a statement to Fox Sports coinciding with the report's release.
'At this time, the family of Scott Bloomquist is not making any public statements regarding the plane crash or the recent NTSB findings,' the statement said. 'They are focused on supporting one another and respectfully request privacy as they navigate this difficult period.
'We appreciate your understanding and ask that the media refrain from further inquiries at this time.'
Known for his long hair and tough-guy attitude, Bloomquist started his racing career at Corona Raceway in 1980 and is said to have won more than 600 races overall. Following Bloomquist's death, Bristol Motor Speedway president and manager Jerry Caldwell said the late driver was 'arguably the greatest dirt late model racer in the sport's history.'
Bloomquist was in a motorcycle accident in March 2019 and suffered serious injuries to his right leg and hip that would cause complications for years afterward.
In June 2023, Bloomquist told Dirt on Dirt that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, but it had been caught early. He said that he was expected to make a full recovery after surgery and treatment.

USA tops Haiti to cap perfect Gold Cup group stage
The United States men's national team beat Haiti 2-1 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Sunday to finish the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup group stage with three wins from three games for just the third time. Malik Tillman opened the scoring for the Americans early in the first half on Sunday. An error by U.S. keeper Matt Freese gifted the Haitians the equalizer just nine minutes later, but Patrick Agyemang put the hosts back in front with a quarter-hour left to play. "I think we showed a great fight today," Tillman told FOX Sports' Jenny Taft afterward. "We're happy to finish the group with three wins." The USMNT will play the winner of Sunday's nightcap between Mexico and Costa Rica in next weekend's quarterfinal. Here are three quick thoughts on Sunday's match. A businesslike performance from the U.S. With the USMNT already qualified for the quarterfinals, coach Mauricio Pochettino made four changes to the starting lineup that beat Trinidad and Tobago and Saudi Arabia in the first two group stage games. The move didn't adversely impact the Americans' cohesion; they started on the front foot for the third straight game and went ahead on a well-worked attack finished by Tillman, who scored his third goal of the tournament off a pinpoint cross from Brenden Aaronson—one of the four new starters. Freese's gaffe disrupted that momentum and gave the physical visitors a spark, though that faded quickly as the match settled into a slog. Still, the U.S. caught a second wind in the second half; Tillman had two goals disallowed before Agyemang finally potted the winner off a beautiful pass by John Tolkin, who made his first start in place of Max Arfsten. Malik TIllman stars again Tillman continues to be the most productive and impressive American this summer, during which the German-born attacker is getting his first real run of playing time since joining the program three years ago. All three of Tillman's international goals have come in this Gold Cup. Off the field, the 23-year-old has also endeared himself to Pochettino and his staff, and the PSV man has taken full advantage of the opportunity presented by the absence of longtime first-choice wingers Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah, plus (dare we mention) Gio Reyna. The story of this summer has yet to be written for Tillman and his team, however. Now he has a chance to make an even bigger impression in the win-or-go-home contests to come. What's next for the USMNT? A tie would have been enough for the U.S. to top Group D, as the Saudis tied T&T on Saturday in a match played simultaneously. The Americans finished a perfect 3-0 in a Gold Cup group stage for just the third time. (They also did it in 2019 and 2023.) But they could still face blood rival Mexico in next Sunday's quarterfinal. Even if El Tri tops the Costa Ricans later on Sunday, the Ticos would present the sternest challenge yet for Pochettino's squad. As promising as this Gold Cup has been for the U.S. so far, the real tests are still to come. Tom Brady Captures Another Title, Wins Inaugural Fanatics Games and $1M Prize
Tom Brady is a champion once again. The seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback won the inaugural Fanatics Games at this weekend's Fanatics Fest in New York, earning him a $1 million prize. The all-time great was among 100 celebrities, athletes and fans to compete in the Fantatics Games, which consisted of eight competitions. The eight competitions consisted of activities from different sports, such as quarterback skills, basketball shooting, soccer goal-scoring and baseball pitching accuracy, among other competitions. One of the other competitions was a WWE Superstar entrance. In his WWE Superstar entrance, Brady spat on New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner jersey and ripped former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning's jersey. Manning later interrupted his entrance, jumping on top of him. That entrance helped Brady earn 399.1 total points in the Fanatics Games. Manning was also one of the athletes who participated, finishing in fifth with 314.5 total points as Brady was able to get some revenge over the quarterback who defeated him in two Super Bowls. Brady, a FOX Sports employee, collected his $1 million prize at the Javits Center on Sunday. However, he awarded $5,000 to each of the 50 fans who participated in the Fanatics Games, while the rest of that money will go to charity. Brady's participation in the Fanatics Games was just one of the few viral moments he had from Fanatics Fest over the weekend. On Friday, he struggled to pick out the real Rob Gronkowski in a group of 20 people dressed like his former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers teammate. On Saturday, Brady joined LeBron James, Victor Wembanyama, streamer Kai Cenat and Maverick Carter for a live taping of "The Shop." "He's always done things the right way. He's always risen above all the noise and BS and continued to deliver," Brady said of James as he sat next to the Los Angeles Lakers star. "So you're witnessing the greatest ever, and I hope you guys will appreciate that." As for the other participants in the Fanatics Games, UFC fighter Justin Gaethje finished in second with 345.5 points. He won a a Ferrari 812 GTS for his performance. Matt Dennish, a 39-year-old teacher from Pennsylvania, finished with 326 points to place third in the competition. He outscored athletes such as James Harden, Tyreek Hill, Dwight Howard, Gronkowski, Michael Chandler and Micah Parsons, who all finished in the top 20 of the athletes who competed in the event. Harden dressed as Hulk Hogan for his WWE entrance. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was also among the athletes who participated, struggling in the pitching accuracy competition. He finished 36th in the competition. Jacksonville Jaguars two-way star Travis Hunter had the worst showing among the athletes who competed at the event, while new Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant finished with the second-worst mark.
