Chandigarh: Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari on Saturday inaugurated the newly developed green belt park in Sector 30-A.
Addressing the gathering, the MP said that the development of the park marks a significant milestone in the city's efforts to provide inclusive, accessible, and eco-friendly recreational spaces.
Spread across 3.5 acres, the park has been redeveloped under various funding heads, with a total investment exceeding Rs 77.65 lakh.
He said as part of landscaping, the park now features three aesthetically designed huts for public rest, 40 durable steel pipe benches, and a wide variety of decorative plants, including golden cypress, ornamental shrubs, ground covers, and palm species — creating a lush, vibrant environment.
While briefing about the features of the green belt, Cong councillor Taruna Mehta said a 1,250-meter-long cement concrete walking and jogging track, constructed under the ward development fund, promotes health and wellness among residents. A modern public toilet block has also been added, ensuring hygiene and convenience for daily visitors.
She said additionally, the mayor development fund supported the construction of boundary wall (toewalls) beneath existing MS flat railings in various parts of the park, enhancing safety and visual appeal.

She said to further encourage evening use, the entire area is now well-lit with 55 energy-efficient lights. A dedicated outdoor gym zone, equipped with 8 fitness units, has been installed to promote physical activity among all age groups.
Sec 41 gets 22 CCTV cameras
Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari also inaugurated CCTV cameras installed under the MPLAD scheme in Sector 41A in the presence of area councillor Hardeep Singh Buterla, senior officers of MC, and prominent residents of the area.
Under this project, 22 high-resolution CCTV cameras have been strategically installed at various points in the locality to monitor the entry and exit of people and enhance overall safety. The system is supported by 5 digital video recorders (DVRs) at different locations to ensure continuous and reliable surveillance. The project has been executed at an estimated cost of Rs 5 lakh.

Station Service Road in Velachery set for a major revamp
The pockmarked Station Service Road in Velachery which has turned into a nightmare for motorists will soon undergo repairs, as the Chennai Corporation is all set set to take up improvement work on the stretch. The service road which was originally constructed by the Southern Railway and runs parallel to the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) from Velachery to Taramani railway station is a boon for motorists to escape the heavily-congested Taramani Link Road to reach Rajiv Gandhi Salai at Taramani. The service road was paved to create access road to Perungudi and Taramani railway stations for the residents of East Velachery. Southern Railway handed over the 3.20-kilometre service road to the Chennai Corporation last year after it faced difficulties in maintaining the road. The civic body had, in the initial stages, installed the street lights for the road more than two years ago. The Station Service road had become unmotorable after it was dug up a few years ago for installing high tension underground power cable from the Taramani substation to Guindy substation for improving the electricity network by Tantransco. S. Harshvardhan, a resident of Madipakkam, said the road has become busy during morning and evening peak hours as hundreds of motorists bound to Rajiv Gandhi Salai use this stretch. However the condition of the road is bad with the concrete poured over the gravel to patch up the dug-up portion of the road having worn out. Half the two-lane road cannot be used. The road becomes slushy with water stagnating in puddles whenever there is even a drizzle as the storm water drain network constructed on both sides of the road has been damaged in several places. Social activist S. Kumararaja said the road was also once used by pedestrians who are now avoiding the uneven stretch riddled with potholes. The macro canal constructed to prevent flooding of residential colonies and help drain into the Pallikaranai marshland has been clogged with construction debris. A senior official of the Chennai Corporation said a Detailed Project Report (DPR) was in the final stages of preparation as the entire upgradation and improvement works are to be executed at a total cost of Rs. 26 crore excluding the road relaying work. For the road repavement component, which is to be executed by Bus Route Road division, the cost comes to Rs. 8.09 crores. While the tender has been opened the work order for identifying the contractor was yet to be finalised. The senior civic official pointing out the road improvement project to be carried out under 'MRTS Sammoga Cholai cum healthwalk' similar to pedestrian plaza would have the following components of well paved footpath, dedicated cycling track, road markings with walkway and kerb paintings, open gym, toilet block and waiting shelters, would completely transform the road. New street lights along with high mast lamps at all the junctions have been proposed. Both the macro and micro drains running along the road would be fully renovated, tge official added.

Dept speeds up appointment of guest teachers in Chamarajanagar
Mysuru: To address the shortage of teaching staff in govt primary and high schools, the department of school education and literacy expedited the appointment of 765 guest teachers across Chamarajanagar. The move aims to ensure the smooth functioning of the schools during the academic year. The process will help the department conduct classes hassle-free without any disturbance to students related to teaching aspects. The district bagged the 27th rank in the SSLC results. This year, the department had made all plans to improve the SSLC results and focus on public exams for 8th class students by giving special attention to guest teacher recruitment. As many as 178 guest teacher posts were vacant in high schools in 2025-26, including 664 in primary schools. The state govt permitted guest teachers for high schools on priority as teachers must prepare their students for public exams. Against the 664 pending in primary schools, state govt permitted only the filling of 583 guest teachers from primary schools. Speaking to TOI, deputy director of public Instruction Ramachandra Raje Urs said that he gave directions to all block education officers to speed up the recruitment of guest teachers. The department also continued the services of most of the guest teachers from the previous year after considering their performance subject-wise. The process is completed in most schools. A clear direction was given to reject candidates bringing recommendation letters, he said. "As govt started the process of appointment of guest teachers to primary and high schools early, it will help students prepare for exams," said Revanna, a retired teacher of Chilakwadi village.

AI crew member Deepak Pathak's body reaches home in Badlapur for final rites
Badlapur: The body of Air India cabin crew member and Badlapur-resident Deepak Pathak, 32, who died in the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, was identified on Friday, a week after the incident. His body reached his home on Saturday, where hundreds of people attended his funeral. His last rites were performed at the cremation ground in Badlapur. Deepak's elderly parents, wife, and both sisters were inconsolable. His relatives, Air India employees and senior officials were among those present for the last rites. Pathak worked in Air India for 11 years and was posted as a cabin crew member a few months ago. After the incident, his two sisters and brother-in-law waited in Ahmedabad for the body. The DNA test of the sisters was done twice, but Deepak's body could not be identified as their DNA did not match his. Later, doctors took DNA samples from Deepak's mother, who was in Badlapur. Her son's body was identified on Friday, eight days after the incident. On Saturday morning, Deepak's body reached JD Rawal Complex in the Katrap area of Badlapur, where he resided. However, he received a call from officials citing an emergency on June 11, so he left for Ahmedabad. The family said Deepak was a dedicated employee, but if he had refused to resume duty that day, he would have been alive today.
