China has, for the first time, disclosed the capabilities of its powerful intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), the DF-5B which plays a major role in China's nuclear defense strategy. With a range that can reach the United States, it is considered one of the deadliest and most powerful weapons in China's missile arsenal.
It is no doubt that China's nuclear program has always been very secretive, so the public disclosure of the DF-5B's abilities has come as a surprise. Interestingly, this revelation has come at a time when tensions between China and the US are already high due to ongoing trade disputes. Can carry multiple nuclear warheads
According to China's state broadcaster, the DF-5B is described as the country's first-generation strategic ICBM. It is a major upgrade of the earlier DF-5 model, developed during the Cold War era. One of the most significant improvements is the use of MIRV (Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicle) technology. This allows the missile to carry and release several nuclear warheads at once.
Unlike the original DF-5, which could carry only one warhead, the DF-5B is believed to carry between six and ten. Each of these warheads can re-enter the Earth's atmosphere on its own path, making it extremely difficult for missile defense systems to stop them all.
In addition, the DF-5B is equipped with satellite-assisted navigation, giving it far more accuracy than earlier versions which makes the missile not only more destructive but also more precise in hitting its targets. 200 times more powerful than atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
China's intercontinental missile, the DF-5B, can carry a nuclear warhead with a blast power of about 3 to 4 megatons of TNT. To put that in perspective, this is nearly 200 times more powerful than the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II.
The DF-5 missile was first developed in the early 1970s and officially became part of China's defense system in 1981. Since then, it has played a key role in China's nuclear strategy, acting as a strong deterrent. Can reach the US and Europe
The DF-5B has an impressive range of up to 12,000 kilometers. This means it can reach targets in the United States and Western Europe. Despite its size and age, it can strike within 500 meters of its target, which is considered very accurate in military terms.
According to Chinese media, the missile is massive and is about 32.6 meters long, 3.35 meters in diameter, and weighs around 183 tons. Its size and power make it one of the most dangerous missiles in China's arsenal today. China expanding its nuclear arsenal
China is rapidly strengthening and modernizing its nuclear weapons stockpile. According to a report by the Pentagon last year, China currently possesses over 600 active nuclear warheads. This number is expected to cross 1,000 by the year 2030.
The report also stated that China has built around 320 missile silos at three major locations.
Despite this expansion, Beijing maintains a 'No First Use' policy — meaning it has pledged not to use nuclear weapons unless attacked first. China has also assured that it will not use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear countries.

‘GPT-5 is arriving this summer': Sam Altman reveals OpenAI's roadmap

Sam Altman seems to be giving interviews one after the other. On Thursday, June 19, the CEO of OpenAI appeared on the company's podcast featuring an extended conversation with host Andrew Mayne. In the pilot episode, which lasted for about 40 minutes, Altman laid out a roadmap focused on offering a unified experience with the release of GPT-5, which is slated for this summer. When it comes to GPT-5, OpenAI seems to be working on a solution to unify its array of model offerings. Based on Altman's interaction, the AI powerhouse is working towards fixing the company's confusing product line-up with GPT-5. Reportedly, the latest generation of GPT will be essentially a simplification of ChatGPT's diverse models into one streamlined user interface. Talking about OpenAI's next frontier AI model, Altman said that it will probably arrive this summer. The CEO also admitted that the current state of the model choice is a 'whole mess'. He stated that the goal is to get back to a simple progression (GPT-5, GPT-6) and do away with the complex variants inferring to models, that is, GPT-4, GPT-4o, etc. Altman explained that the future goal is to develop a unified model that can handle everything seamlessly, from instant questions to complex, multi-step tasks using reasoning and agent-like tools such as Deep Research. This would essentially eliminate the need for switching modes within the ChatGPT interface. Altman also said that there is an internal debate going on over the naming strategy for the upcoming model to convey clarity. He even briefly mentioned Elon Musk, and how the SpaceX chief tried using his influence in the government to unfairly compete. Altman said that a shift towards delivering a unified user experience was taking place because AI has evolved from being a bot that gives instant answers. He said that he is surprised to find that for hard problems, users are willing to wait for a 'great answer'. According to him, this insight is driving the development of more thoughtful reasoning models that could perform like a human expert, essentially taking its own time before answering. This is Altman's second podcast interview this week. On the Uncapped podcast that was uploaded to YouTube on June 17, Altman said that Meta offered his employees $100 million bonuses to recruit them as a part of the social media giant's recent efforts to ramp up its AI strategy.

Vi partners with AST SpaceMobile for direct-to-cell satcom in India

Debt-ridden telecom operator Vodafone Idea (Vi) on Wednesday announced that it has joined hands with US-based AST SpaceMobile in a partnership aimed at delivering space-based mobile broadband services to smartphones across the country. Under the agreement, Vi will oversee terrestrial network integration, operating spectrum, and market access, while AST SpaceMobile will develop, manufacture, and manage the satellite constellation powering the system. 'This collaboration is poised to be the frontier of global space technology and both companies will use data and applications to connect. Together, Vi and AST SpaceMobile will explore and implement commercial offerings for diverse sectors,' Vi said in a stock exchange filing. The latest tie-up marks the third and final private sector telecom company to officially enter the unfolding satcom race. In March, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio announced separate deals with Elon Musk's Starlink to distribute Starlink equipment and services in India. Vi expects the collaboration to unlock new possibilities for emergency response, disaster management, agriculture, and other sectors. AST SpaceMobile first launched five satellites into space as part of a mission called BlueBird 1–5 in July last year. It has since reportedly revealed plans to deploy up to 60 more satellites over the next six to nine months, through five launches. The company currently provides nationwide non-continuous service across the US, with over 5,600 cells in premium low-band spectrum and a planned tenfold increase in processing bandwidth. Vi's latest venture will, however, require a Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) services license to offer satellite-based broadband in India. Earlier this month, Starlink received the license after two-and-a-half years of processing, joining Airtel-backed Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications Ltd as licensed satcom providers in the country. Vi said the partnership will enable direct-to-device satellite connectivity, allowing users to access mobile broadband services in areas where traditional cellular networks are unavailable. 'This will enable direct-to-device satellite connectivity, which means that users will be able to access mobile broadband services in areas where traditional cellular networks are not available. This will be particularly beneficial for people living in remote and rural areas, as well as for emergency response and disaster management. The partnership will also support the government's Digital India vision, which aims to provide universal access to mobile broadband services across the country,' the company added.

India's New Hypersonic Missile 3X Faster Than BrahMos, Boasts Greater Range, Deadlier Precision

Last Updated: ET-LDHCM can function even at extreme temperatures of 2000°C. So far, only Russia, the US, and China possess such high-heat missile tech, putting India in elite company Amid escalating global tensions—marked by the Israel-Iran conflict and growing friction between India and Pakistan with Turkey's backing—India is ramping up efforts to modernise its defence systems. Building on advancements like the BrahMos, Agni-5, and Akash missiles, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is now preparing to test a next-generation cruise missile under Project Vishnu. Touted to surpass the capabilities of the BrahMos, the new missile could place India among the select few nations developing hypersonic cruise missile technology. The Extended Trajectory Long Duration Hypersonic Missile (ET-LDHCM), developed under this project, is poised to enhance India's strategic advantage, particularly in countering Pakistan and potentially balancing China's influence. How Does It Compare With Brahmos The ET-LDHCM, developed entirely using indigenous technology, boasts hypersonic speeds, extended range, and precision strikes—making it significantly more lethal than the existing BrahMos missile. Equipped with a cutting-edge scramjet engine based on the air-breathing concept, the missile uses atmospheric oxygen for combustion instead of a rotating compressor, enabling much higher speeds than conventional systems. Capable of reaching speeds of Mach-8 (approximately 11,000 kmph), the ET-LDHCM can strike distant targets in a matter of minutes. In comparison, the BrahMos cruise missile travels at Mach-3, or about 3,675 kmph, highlighting the quantum leap in capability. ET-LDHCM is ahead of the current BrahMos cruise missile in both speed and range. Initially, the range of BrahMos was 290 km, which was later increased to 400–450 km. In comparison, the range of ET-LDHCM is 1,500 km—making it more than three times as powerful as BrahMos in terms of reach. ET-LDHCM is capable of carrying a 1,000 to 2,000 kg warhead. This advanced missile can strike targets with both conventional and nuclear warheads. It has also been developed by DRDO in a way that allows it to fly at low altitudes, helping it easily evade radar detection. Can Strike From Land, Air Or Sea Operational flexibility is a key and important feature of ET-LDHCM. It can be launched from anywhere—land, air, or sea—further strengthening India's strategic and tactical reach. Unlike conventional ballistic missiles, ET-LDHCM can adapt to the geographical conditions of the area and even alter its path mid-flight. This capability allows it to inflict deep damage by precisely targeting and destroying enemy bases. With a speed of 11,000 kilometres per hour and a range of 1,500 kilometres, ET-LDHCM becomes an even more formidable weapon. Performs Even At 2,000°C In addition to range and speed, the ability to withstand extreme temperatures is a key factor in determining the effectiveness of any missile or fighter jet. The ET-LDHCM is designed to perform even under intense thermal conditions. It is reportedly capable of operating normally at temperatures reaching 2000 degrees Celsius. Until now, only Russia, the United States, and China have developed such technology. A successful test of the ET-LDHCM would place India among this elite group of nations.
