Over 7.5 crore jobs created in formal sector in last 7 years: Mandaviya highlights India's employment formalisation progress at ILC
In the last seven years, more than 7.5 crore jobs have been created in the formal sector in India, said Union Minister of Labour & Employment Mansukh Mandaviya at the Plenary Session of the 113th International Labour Conference here. He added that India is building a vibrant education-to-employment ecosystem.
"India has especially progressed in the formalisation of employment. As a result, in the last seven years, more than 7.5 crore jobs have been created in the formal sector. Our employment-linked incentive scheme will promote formal employment further with an allocation of USD 12.8 billion," Mandaviya said at the session.
The Union Minister also highlighted the "strong digital public infrastructure" being built in India."India has built a strong digital public infrastructure, which includes platforms like National Career Service (NCS), which is a one-stop solution for our youth and the working population. We now use NCS to aggregate global job demand and facilitate international labour mobility," he said."We are building a vibrant education-to-employment ecosystem where universities, industry partners, and skill centres are being brought together so our youth can get opportunities based on real market demands," he added.
While holding a bilateral discussion with the Director General, ILO, Gilbert F Houngbo on the sidelines of the International Labour Conference, Mandaviya highlighted the pro-poor and labour welfare schemes undertaken by the Modi Government over the past 11 years.The Union Minister also apprised DG ILO about the national-level Social Protection Data Pooling Exercise that has been carried out by the Government in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation.Recognising these efforts, the ILO acknowledged India's achievement and officially published on its dashboard that 64.3% of India's population, i.e. over 94 crore people, are now covered under at least one social protection benefit. In 2015, this figure was just 19%.In terms of beneficiary count, India now ranks second in the world, providing social protection to around 94 crore citizens. DG ILO praised India's focused welfare policies for the poor and labour class under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.The ILO's criteria for Scheme Consideration for each country include that the scheme should be legislatively backed, in cash, and active. Additionally, verified time series data for the last three years must be provided.
Speaking from Geneva, Mandaviya said, "This remarkable achievement stands as a testament to the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and the relentless efforts of the Government in building an inclusive and rights-based social protection ecosystem. The increase marks the fastest expansion in social protection coverage worldwide, reflecting the Government's unwavering commitment to "Antyodaya", i.e., empowering the last mile and fulfilling the promise of leaving no one behind." It is important to note that the present figure reflects only Phase I of the data pooling exercise. This phase focused on beneficiary data of Central sector schemes and women-centric schemes in selected 8 States. With Phase II and further consolidation underway, it is expected that India's total social protection coverage will soon surpass the 100-crore mark upon verification of additional schemes by the ILO.India is also the first country globally to update its 2025 social protection coverage data in the ILOSTAT database, reinforcing its leadership in digital governance and transparency in welfare systems.Moreover, the increase in Social Protection Coverage will further strengthen India's global engagements, particularly in finalising Social Security Agreements (SSAs) with developed nations. These agreements will ensure the portability of social protection benefits for Indian professionals working overseas, while offering partner countries the transparency required for mutual recognition frameworks. This will further bolster India's position in trade and labour mobility negotiations by showcasing a credible and robust social protection regime. Mandaviya is leading an Indian delegation to Geneva, Switzerland, from 10th to 12th June 2025 to participate in the 113th session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) of the ILO.India has achieved a historic milestone in the realm of social protection coverage, recording one of the most significant expansions globally. According to the latest data from the International Labour Organization's (ILO) ILOSTAT database, India's social security coverage has increased from 19% in 2015 to 64.3% in 2025, an unprecedented 45 percentage point surge over the past decade.

Detailed discussions were held on the implementation of various projects under Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Lohgarh Foundation Trust and other related points. During the meeting, Rakesh Beniwal, founder of Kisan Yuva Club, and his colleague Aman Virk handed over a cheque of Rs 11 lakh to Khattar as a donation in the name of the trust. Works on Sankar Vilas flyover to begin despite pending land issues
Guntur: Notwithstanding the pending legal issues with regard to land acquisition, the district administration has decided to kick-start the works on the prestigious Sankar Vilas flyover. The first phase of the four-lane rail over bridge (ROB) will be launched from AC college junction (East constituency). The Union govt has granted Rs 98 crore to take up the long-pending flyover project almost eight months ago. Curiously, the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) could not complete land acquisition due to strong resistance from the owners of commercial properties on Brodipet main road. About 50 property owners approached the court and got stay orders on acquisition of their properties until payment of compensation under the land acquisition Act. However, GMC had been negotiating them to accept the transferable development rights (TDR) bonds as it did not have sufficient funds to give the compensation in cash. The GMC estimated that it would require at least Rs 50 crore to clear the compensation through land acquisition Act. While the property owners have been waiting for the relief, district administration gave them a shocker by deciding to launch the work. Sources said that this is a strategic attempt to push the property owners, who refused to budge and accept the TDR bonds as compensation, into a corner. Sources said that the main road on both the sides of existing ROB will be closed for vehicular movement from Monday and R&B department will start bringing down the existing flyover before laying the pillars for the new obe.

India Will Not Run Short Of Fuels Due To Middle East Tensions: Hardeep Puri
New Delhi: Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Sunday allayed fears over any disruption in oil supplies to Indian consumers due to the Israel-Iran war and further escalation in geopolitical tensions in the Middle East because of the US bombing of Iran's nuclear sites. "We have been closely monitoring the evolving geopolitical situation in the Middle East since the past two weeks. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we have diversified our supplies in the past few years, and a large volume of our supplies does not come through the Strait of Hormuz now," the minister said. He pointed out that the country's oil marketing companies (Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum) have supplies for several weeks and continue to receive energy supplies from several routes. "We will take all necessary steps to ensure the stability of supplies of fuel to our citizens," the minister assured. Iran is situated on the northern side of the Strait of Hormuz/Persian Gulf, through which 20 million barrels of oil per day flow from major exporting countries such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Iran had threatened to block this route if the US intervened in the conflict with Israel. A wider Middle East conflict is expected to have an impact on oil supplies from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait and the UAE, which would lead to a sharp spike in oil prices. Shipping could also get hit as Yemen's Houthi rebels have already warned that they would resume their attacks on ships if the US attacked Iran. India imports around 85 per cent of its crude oil requirement, and a surge in oil prices leads to an increase in its oil import bill and pushes up the rate of inflation, which hurts economic growth. The larger outgo of foreign exchange also leads to a weakening of the rupee vis-a-vis the US dollar. However, India has diversified its oil sources by increasing imports from Russia as well as the US and building resilience through strategic reserves. Highlighting the infrastructure milestones in the oil and gas sector, Puri had earlier said that the country now has 23 modern operational refineries with a total capacity of 257 million metric tonnes per annum to produce petroleum products. The minister also highlighted the ministry's initiative in setting up storage facilities for strategic petroleum reserves, on which the country can fall back in times of emergency and which assume importance during times of geopolitical uncertainty. These reserves can also be dipped into at times when global prices skyrocket to provide a cushion to the national oil companies. The minister mentioned that the storage capacity at Pudur is 2.25 million metric tonnes (MMT), the Visakhapatnam facility has the capacity to store 1.33 MMT of crude oil, while Mangalore has a storage capacity of 1.5 MMT. Besides, another strategic reserve facility is being built at Chandikhol, which is also on the coast.
