The firm building what will become the largest port in India plans to raise as much as 300 billion rupees ($3.5 billion) of debt, giving lenders an opportunity to invest in one of the cornerstones of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's infrastructure overhaul.
Owners of the Vadhvan Port Project Ltd., located a few hours north of Mumbai, are looking to raise debt with tenors in the range of 15 to 20 years. They're considering onshore and offshore markets to raise the funds, according to a top official. 'We have started the process of raising debt which will happen in two phases,' said Unmesh Sharad Wagh, chairman at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, or JNPA, which holds a 74% stake. The Maharashtra Maritime Board owns the remaining 26%. The $9 billion port project is a major undertaking for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who laid the port's foundation stone last year. Upon completion, which is expected toward the end of the decade, Vadhvan will have the capacity to handle some 23 million container units, making it one of the 10 largest ports in the world, according to its backers.
IDBI Capital was appointed as advisor to help lineup long term lenders for the first round of funding, with a target of at least 220 billion rupees, Wagh said. The funds will be disbursed over the next five years, and the request for proposals from lenders will be floated during the October to December quarter. JNPA and MMB will jointly infuse about 130 billion rupees worth of equity into the project, said Wagh, who is also chairman and managing director of Vadhvan Port Project. The firm is in talks with multilateral agencies, and is working on reclaiming 1,200 hectares of land, he added.
Bolstering the country's maritime infrastructure is a priority for Modi's administration. Through the country's annual budget in February, the government proposed a Maritime Development Fund to support the sector through financial assistance via equity or debt securities.
Some of the largest container ships have been forced to skip India because none of its existing ports are deep enough to receive them. Vadhvan's natural depth of 20 meters would allow some of the largest ships to dock. It would also serve as a starting point for the so-called India-Middle East-Europe Corridor, a planned economic link aimed at developing new trade routes between the regions.

India increasingly experiencing BJP's development model: PM Modi

Bhubaneswar, June 20 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the country has increasingly 'experienced the BJP's development model", pointing to the recent trajectories of Assam, Tripura and, most recently, Odisha. Addressing a rally marking the first anniversary of Odisha's BJP government, the Prime Minister contrasted the 'previous regime's model of governance—marked by delay, obstruction, derailment and corruption' with what he called a decade of 'good governance that makes people's lives easier". Highlighting the Eastern India as a case study, Modi said a decade ago Assam was mired in instability, separatism and violence. "Today the guns have fallen silent and Assam is out‑pacing many other states on several parameters,' he said. In Tripura ,the Prime Minister said after decades of Left rule, Tripura 'lagged on every development indicator,' from crumbling infrastructure to unresponsive administration. Now, Modi argued, it has become 'a symbol of peace and progress.' Coming to Odisha , he said, it had long wrestled with widespread corruption, red‑tapism and poor infrastructure, leaving many regions behind. 'Over the past year we have worked with full resolve to change that reality,' he declared. Modi credited the union‑and‑state 'double engine' approach for a spate of projects worth 'thousands of crores' inaugurated on Friday. This model, he said, is delivering twin benefits: He said lakhs of poor families in Odisha previously excluded from Ayushman Bharat now receive coverage under both the Ayushman Bharat Jan Arogya Yojana and Odisha's Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana. Nearly three crore Odias are eligible for cash‑free treatment—inside and outside the state—and more than two lakh patients have already availed themselves of the scheme in hospitals across a dozen states. Under Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana, over 23 lakh senior citizens (70+) in Odisha can claim up to Rs.5 lakh in free medical care, significantly easing household health costs. Modi said the farmers in Odisha now receive combined assistance under PM‑KISAN and the state's complementary schemes. The higher paddy procurement prices, promised last year, have already benefited lakhs of cultivators, Modi said. The Prime Minister lamented that tribal communities had been kept 'in poverty and deprivation for decades' and 'used for political gain' by earlier governments, which in turn fueled Naxalism. 'Our model brings development to these regions instead of driving them toward violence and oppression,' he asserted. UNI DP RN

Rung traders seek revival of India-China trade at Lipulekh border

Pithoragarh: Traders from the Rung community, who have historically engaged in India-China border trade through Lipulekh Pass, are demanding its resumption and have expressed deep disappointment over its continued suspension this year. Border trade has remained shut since 2019. "Trade between India and Tibet through Lipulekh has been ongoing since ancient times. Though it was halted after the 1962 India-China war, it resumed in 1992," said Daulat Singh Raypa, general secretary of India-China Border Trade Association. The Kailash Mansarovar yatra , which also passes through Lipulekh, began in 1981. Both the pilgrimage and trade continued uninterrupted until 2019, when operations were suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic. While the yatra has been permitted to resume this year, border trade remains suspended. "We were hopeful trade would also restart once the yatra resumed, especially since Lipulekh is now connected by road," said Raypa. The construction of the Tawaghat–Lipulekh road was completed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in 2022. "We were very enthusiastic because road connectivity reduces both time and costs and makes trade more viable," he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ductless Air Conditioners Are Selling Like Crazy [See Why] Keep Cool Click Here Undo Since the Chinese govt granted permission to Nepali Rung traders to resume border trade in 2024, "the Indian Rung community must also be allowed without delay," said Jeevan Singh, president of the traders' union. "We met central ministers and urged them to restart the border trade," he added. In 2019, 40 traders left unsold goods in godowns and shops, with an estimated Rs 2 crore worth of items stuck in the Chinese mandi at Taklakot, said Singh.

'Don't Make Excuses...': Omar Abdullah Takes Swipe At Ally Congress Over EVM Charge

Last Updated: He also took a swipe at the INDIA bloc, pointing out that the alliance's leaders have not held a single meeting since the conclusion of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday took a sharp swipe at the INDIA bloc ally Congress over its allegations against the Election Commission, saying that excuses shouldn't be made when someone doesn't succeed in elections. After the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, the Congress party repeatedly criticised the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), alleging irregularities and a lack of transparency in the electoral process. 'So what you hear from the Congress in terms of its reservations about the process of elections, this is all the Congress's own point of view. I don't share it. I don't share it simply because I'm not given to making excuses for things that I don't succeed at," said Abdullah during an interview with The Economic Times. 'If I have a problem with election results, then I need to have it when I've won as well. My party did better than we expected in the October assembly elections. Nobody expected us to get this number of seats," the Chief Minister remarked. Omar Abdullah delivers a reality check to Congress for attacking the Election Commission:'Don't make excuses for things you don't succeed at."'I got more seats than anyone expected. If I don't have a problem with how elections are conducted when I win, I can't have a problem… — Amit Malviya (@amitmalviya) June 20, 2025 Recently, the Congress leaders questioned the credibility of the EVM system and demanded a return to ballot papers or the implementation of stricter safeguards. The party also called for an all-party discussion on electoral reforms to restore voter confidence. 'So if I don't have a problem with the way elections are conducted when I win, I certainly can't have a problem with the way elections are conducted because I've lost," Abdullah said. He also took a swipe at the INDIA bloc, pointing out that the alliance's leaders have not held a single meeting since the conclusion of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
