United States Congressional Candidate Peter Coe Verbica Unveils 25-Point Federal Plan to Help Make California Affordable Again

Yahoo12-06-2025

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. and SAN JOSE, Calif. and SANTA CRUZ, Calif. and MONTEREY, Calif., June 12, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- US. Congressional Candidate Peter Coe Verbica, author of Hard-Won Cowboy Wisdom and a CFP® professional, releases a comprehensive plan outlining 25 federal initiatives to combat California's growing affordability crisis.
Verbica is running for US Congress, California District 19, which includes Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Luis Obispo Counties.
While many of the cost drivers (such as housing, gas, utilities, and insurance) are the result of decades of restrictive state policies, Candidate for Congress Verbica emphasizes that federal lawmakers still have powerful tools to ease the burden on California families and businesses.
"California's affordability crisis is pushing out teachers, nurses, firefighters, small businesses, and young families," states Peter Coe Verbica. "While Sacramento bears responsibility for many of these cost pressures, if elected, I will focus on delivering federal solutions that can provide real relief."
STATE POLICIES AT THE ROOT OF THE CRISIS
US. Congressional Candidate Verbica notes several long-standing California-specific issues that have contributed to the affordability problem:
Housing shortages caused by decades of underbuilding and abuse of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA);
Gas prices inflated by abnormal fuel blend mandates and layered state taxes;
Utility rate hikes driven by wildfire liability and lack of infrastructure modernization;
Water scarcity and costs worsened by failure to build new dams or reservoirs in over 50 years, despite voters approving Proposition 1 which allocated $7.5 billion to water infrastructure in 2014;
Insurance market instability due to rigid regulatory frameworks like Prop 103;
Punitive labor laws such as the Private Attorneys General Act (PAGA), making it riskier to hire workers;
An overall anti-business climate marked by overregulation and litigation threats.
25 ACTIONS A FEDERAL REPRESENTATIVE CAN TAKE TO HELP
Despite these state-level challenges, Candidate for Congress Verbica lays out 25 actionable federal strategies aimed at reducing costs and improving conditions for California residents:
Housing
Tie the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funding to local zoning reform and faster permitting.
Expand Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) allocations.
Reform the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) to streamline federal land development.
Repurpose federal surplus land for housing.
Fund scalable modular housing technology.
Pilot CEQA-exempt housing projects on federal land.
Create federal grants for local governments that upzone.Fuel & Transportation
Standardize clean fuel blends nationally.
Request EPA waivers to allow broader gasoline availability.
Investigate fuel market manipulation.
Expand EV charging networks in low-income areas.
Incentivize remote work through federal tax policy.Utilities & Wildfire Resilience
Increase Federal Emergency Management (FEMA)/ Department of Energy (DOE) grid-hardening grants.
Launch a federal wildfire reinsurance or bond market.
Fund fuel reduction on federal forest land.
Modernize interstate grid connectivity through the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).Water Infrastructure
Fund critical storage projects like Sites Reservoir.
Invest in desalination and recycling initiatives.
Direct United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)/Interior support to agriculture efficiency.
Reform federal Environmental Species Act (ESA) water-use rules to balance needs.Jobs & Business Climate
Consider the preemption of harmful labor regulations for interstate commerce.
Establish a federal "safe harbor" employment category for startups, gig workers, and agricultural employees.
Hold hearings on the economic impact of PAGA.
Provide tax incentives for reshoring California manufacturing.
Expand Small Business Administration (SBA) legal and compliance resources for small businesses.
A FEDERAL PARTNER IN STATEWIDE REFORM
"The cost of living in California shouldn't be a reason to leave," US. Congressional Candidate Verbica adds. "We can't solve everything in Washington, but we can be a strong partner in turning things around. This plan is just the beginning, and we look forward to the very real possibility of working in cooperation with a Republican governor in California."
US. Congressional Candidate Verbica plans to introduce or support legislation aligned with these recommendations, while coordinating with local officials, stakeholders, and agencies to ensure federal support is targeted where it's most needed.
Incumbent politicians had their chance, and they refused to structurally fix social security for current and future generations. They are not the solution; they are part of the problem. Vote for Peter Verbica for Congress.

Colorado lawmakers respond to U.S. strikes on Iran, address security concerns

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis directs teams to remain vigilant in wake of attacks on Iran Colorado Gov. Jared Polis directs teams to remain vigilant in wake of attacks on Iran Colorado Gov. Jared Polis directs teams to remain vigilant in wake of attacks on Iran In the wake of the attacks by U.S. forces against three nuclear sites in Iran on Saturday, many Colorado officials and representatives took to social media in both support and opposition. CBS The military community is a significant part of Colorado, with six military bases across the state. The F.E. Warren Air Force Base missile field also spans an area covering parts of Wyoming, Nebraska and Colorado. The base is one of three strategic missile bases in the U.S. responsible for the country's nuclear defense. Gov. Jared Polis took to Facebook on Saturday to reassure Coloradans that he is working to mitigate any safety concerns that may arise as the world waits to see how Iran will respond. "I met with my public safety team this evening and directed that they coordinate with state, local and federal partners and remain vigilant against all threats to Coloradans and the state's infrastructure and military assets. The state is actively monitoring for any unusual or heightened activity and threats." Many Colorado representatives in Congress condemned the decision to attacks, claiming it was outside of the president's authority to authorize them, while others praised the decision, stating the attacks are protecting the United States. Most reactions fell along party lines. Rep. Lauren Boebert, who represents Colorado's 4th congressional district, did not release a statement, but she reposted a tweet from the president depicting a U.S. flag, suggesting support for his decision. Rep. Brittany Pettersen, who serves Colorado's 7th District, condemned the president for not obtaining congressional approval for the attacks. "Only Congress may authorize war. And the last person I would trust to lead us through this is Donald Trump. As we watch to see the results of this strike, my primary concern is the safety and security American service members and diplomats across the region. For the good of America and the world, we must prioritize diplomatic de-escalation. " Meanwhile, Rep. Jason Crow, who served as an Army Ranger and now represents Colorado's 6th District, said he's seeking more information about the strikes and condemned the attack as executive overreach. "I'm seeking more information about the strikes against Iran, but here's what we do know: 1. Trump broke a promise to prevent America from entering new conflicts. 2. Trump has, once again, exceeded his authority. 3. Congress must act now & reclaim constitutional power over America's use of military force." Colorado's 3rd District Rep., Jeff Hurd, praised the attacks on X, stating, "The world is safer when America leads. I support efforts to protect U.S. security and stand with our allies. Grateful to our servicemembers for their professionalism and courage." Rep. Gabe Evans of Colorado's 8th District is also an Army veteran. He praised the military members who carried out the attack on X, stating: "I'm glad to see @POTUS take action to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. As a veteran of a Global War on Terror, I know we achieve peace through strength. Prayers and thanks to our brave men and women who carried out this necessary operation."

‘The Onion' Mocks Congress' ‘Cowardice' in ‘New York Times' Full Page Editorial

The Onion published a full page ad in the New York Times mocking the 'cowardice' of Congress in the face of the Trump administration's 'growing assaults on essential liberties.' A printed copy of the satirical paper's editorial — which was planned even before Trump dropped a 'payload of bombs' on Iran without Congress' authorization — was also delivered to every member of Congress, the Handbasket reports. 'Members of Congress—now, more than ever, our nation desperately needs your cowardice,' the editorial states. 'We teeter on the brink of collapse into an authoritarian state. That is why, today, The Onion calls upon our lawmakers to sit back and do absolutely nothing. Now is not the time for bravery or valor! This is the time for protecting your own hide and lining your pocket. Now is not the time for listening to your idiotic constituents drone on about what's happening to their precious democracy. This is the time for getting down on all fours and groveling.' In an open letter accompanying the editorial, Bryce P. Tetraeder, the faux CEO of the Onion's parent company Global Tetrahedron, celebrated Congress' inactivity. 'As a titan of business, I find this nation's descent into corruption and tyranny not simply a balm for my soul, but also a huge benefit to my bottom line,' Tetraeder wrote. 'We are on the precipice of a new economic order, one in which affluent men like myself will be able to select their own tax rate from a drop-down menu. It's a reality I barely dreamed possible just a few months ago.' Speaking to the Handbasket, the Onion's actual CEO Ben Collins said of the stunt, 'The Onion is known for its oracular ability to predict the next great American horror, but the timing on this might be the most prescient bit of The Onion's reporting yet. As the president drags this country headlong into yet another war, which will certainly bring about no adverse consequences, I am proud to reiterate The Onion's call for Congress to sit back and just let this all happen to us.' The Onion's editorial board — signees include the Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, hockey legend Joe Sakic, and Benedict Arnold — concluded their editorial, 'Let this be the moment to make amends for any missteps of American bravery and valor. Congress, we are asking, nay, demanding: This coming Independence Day, don't wave the Stars and Stripes, that enduring symbol of liberty and rebellion. Instead, wave the white flag of surrender.' War Powers Act Explained as Thomas Massie, Ro Khanna Push House Resolution

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A bipartisan group of House lawmakers, led by Republican Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Democratic Representative Ro Khanna of California introduced a War Powers Resolution Tuesday, just days before President Donald Trump authorized a military strike on three key nuclear facilities in Iran. The War Powers Resolution of 1973 was enacted to limit the president's ability to commit U.S. armed forces to hostilities abroad without Congressional consent. The current legislative push invokes the act's provisions and highlights persistent congressional frustration over what many see as executive overreach in the deployment of military force. Khanna called for Congress to return to Washington, D.C., to vote on the measure, which he said Sunday had up to 50 co-sponsors across both parties. Why It Matters The House resolution spotlights a critical debate over constitutional war powers at a moment when U.S. involvement in Middle Eastern conflicts risks escalation. Lawmakers are seeking to reinforce Congress's authority to declare war amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel and amid U.S. military actions that, according to critics, may exceed presidential powers. The House initiative mirrors concurrent moves in the Senate, where Democratic Virginia Senator Tim Kaine and others have advanced parallel resolutions to restrict executive military action in Iran without legislative consent. This legislative surge reflects mounting concerns about the scope and legality of recent U.S. military activity abroad. United States Capitol Building, Washington DC, October 27, 2024. Getty What To Know Massie introduced the War Powers Resolution on Tuesday, emphasizing that the U.S. Constitution vests the power to declare war with Congress, not the President. Massie invited participation from lawmakers across the aisle, underscoring bipartisan concern about unauthorized military actions, Newsweek previously reported. Khanna quickly co-sponsored the measure and publicly called for Congress to reconvene and vote. "Stopping Iran from having a nuclear bomb is a top priority, but dragging the U.S. into another Middle East war is not the solution," Khanna said in a press release. "Trump's strikes are unconstitutional and put Americans, especially our troops, at risk," Khanna said. "Congress needs to come back to DC immediately to vote on Rep. Thomas Massie and my bipartisan War Powers Resolution to ensure there is no further conflict and escalation." "Americans want diplomacy, not more costly wars. We need to deescalate and pursue a path of peace," Rep. Khanna concluded. The resolution has garnered support from 50 House members, including Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, and Pramila Jayapal. The list remains heavily Democrat, though more Republicans may break with the party in the coming days as the aftermath of Trump's military strikes continue to play out. What People Are Saying Rep. Ro Khanna, Democrat of California, said in an official statement "Stopping Iran from having a nuclear bomb is a top priority, but dragging the U.S. into another Middle East war is not the solution. Trump's strikes are unconstitutional and put Americans, especially our troops, at risk. Congress needs to come back to DC immediately to vote on Rep. Thomas Massie and my bipartisan War Powers Resolution to ensure there is no further conflict and escalation. Americans want diplomacy, not more costly wars. We need to deescalate and pursue a path of peace." President Donald Trump wrote in a Truth Social post, in part: "Congressman Thomas Massie of Kentucky is not MAGA, even though he likes to say he is. Actually, MAGA doesn't want him, doesn't know him, and doesn't respect him. He is a negative force who almost always Votes "NO," no matter how good something may be. He's a simple minded "grandstander" who thinks it's good politics for Iran to have the highest level Nuclear weapon, while at the same time yelling "DEATH TO AMERICA" at every chance they get." What Happens Next The House War Powers Resolution is scheduled for a mandatory floor vote within 15 days under the chamber's rules. Parallel debates are ongoing in the Senate. As U.S. lawmakers weigh the resolution, the outcome may set new precedents for executive military authority and the balance of war powers between Congress and the White House.
