EXCLUSIVE: NHS Tayside estates chief suspended and escorted from hospital

NHS Tayside has suspended its head of estates amid an internal investigation – but is refusing to reveal the reason for the shock move.
The Courier understands Garry Johnstone, a long-term employee who oversees the health board's property and infrastructure, has been placed on leave.
Staff say Mr Johnstone was seen being escorted from Ninewells Hospital on Friday May 9, although the health board declined to comment on the incident or confirm any details.
A spokeswoman said: 'We do not comment on matters relating to individual members of staff.'
The Courier has verified that Mr Johnstone is not at work while the probe is ongoing.
Police Scotland says it is not aware of any reports related to the matter.
It is not clear what has been alleged or whether any wrongdoing is suspected.
One NHS source said: 'No one quite knows what has happened but it is very unusual.
'Everyone knows something has happened but they (NHS Tayside executives) are saying nothing.'
Mr Johnstone, who has risen through the ranks since joining NHS Tayside in 2004, was not at home when The Courier visited on Tuesday.
A relative said he had gone on holiday.
When contacted by email, an out-of-office message said his inbox is not being monitored.
He was promoted to head of estates just over a year ago, placing him in charge of the health board's estate portfolio, including oversight of buildings, infrastructure and maintenance contracts.
He was previously a senior estates manager.
Dundee-based Labour MSP Michael Marra said the situation demands full transparency from NHS Tayside.
'This is deeply concerning news for staff, patients and the wider public,' he said.
'Suspension of a senior member of staff leaves NHS Tayside with serious questions to answer.
'NHS Tayside must ensure transparency and accountability are at the heart of its procedures.'
Mr Marra has previously accused the organisation of a culture of secrecy, describing it as a 'fundamentally dishonest' institution.
'There are brilliant staff working really hard, but the institution has been beset by scandal after scandal because it has become a fundamentally dishonest institution,' he said.
'Instead of facing up to the challenges, what they have been concerned about is managing headlines for local SNP politicians.'

Walnuts, on the other hand, are a fantastic source of omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, boasting anti-inflammatory properties. Come lunchtime, Jordan whipped up a chicken and chickpea pasta salad, praising it as a great source of fibre. He dressed it with extra virgin olive oil, a cornerstone of the Mediterranean diet, and tossed in extras like cucumber, tomatoes, olives and feta cheese. After downing a matcha energy drink to keep him fuelled, Jordan sat down to dinner: a watermelon feta salad paired with "fresh, crispy mackerel" and potato wedges. He rounded off the day with a pair of kiwis. Kiwis, packed with vitamin C and dietary fibre, are a fantastic choice. Police are facing demands to investigate the deaths of hundreds of babies across Scotland. The Sunday Mail has learned campaigners reported concerns about the number of newborns dying in maternity units and have called for urgent action. But Police Scotland insists it has 'noted' the concerns, but has so far refused to open a formal investigation. ‌ It comes as forces in England are currently probing the deaths of hundreds of babies at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust after a review found catastrophic failings. Scottish campaign group ASAP-NHS, led by former Crown prosecutor for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Roger Livermore, contacted Police Scotland in February over their concerns about baby death rates in Scotland. ‌ Recent figures show about 500 babies have died since 2019, with health boards paying compensation in 131 cases of baby death or injury. The total compensation bill in the last five years is more than £74million with about a third of that being paid out by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Livermore said: 'We have been very concerned about the large number of babies dying unnecessarily and unlawfully all over Scotland. We have reported them to the police and Lord Advocate but no effective action has been taken. 'There are major problems in maternity services across all parts of the UK. Current scandals in England are being investigated by the police. Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain has held a very small number of fatal accident inquiries on the situation at individual health boards. This is not sufficient. 'Overarching law requires that deaths must be handled and investigated by a person and body independent of government – not a member of it. In the rest of the UK this is the HM Coroner system.' ‌ Livermore said he was concerned that Healthcare Improvement Scotland, the NHS watchdog in Scotland, had never carried out maternity unit inspections before this year. He said that reviews into serious incidents which have resulted in death or harm to patients, known as serious adverse event reviews, are also not being routinely published. He said: 'Frontline staff such as midwives are aware of the problems and have already raised concerns about the situation across the country. The internal reports, when they are forced out of NHS boards under Freedom of Information, show that the same problems are endlessly repeated. Lessons are not learnt. The public are totally kept in the dark.' As previously reported by the Sunday Mail, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde was rapped by health watchdogs after it emerged hundreds of serious adverse event reviews had not been carried out, years after the incidents had happened. ‌ The health board recorded more than 1000 'Category 1 significant adverse events' that may have contributed to or resulted in permanent harm or death of patients in the last five years. Police Scotland said that it had received the report but was not planning on taking any action. The force said: 'There is no police investigation into baby deaths at Scottish maternity units.' Between January and October last year, 262 incidents were recorded with just 14 reviews completed at all, and just one within the 90-day timescale. In 2017, NHS Ayrshire and Arran was criticised over the 'unnecessary' deaths of six babies at Crosshouse hospital, with staff shortages affecting patient care. In 2018, Freya Murphy died at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital after medics failed to notice she was being starved of oxygen during delivery. An FAI found staffing levels were an issue.

Cwmbran-based Expanding Horizons secured the homes following its takeover of Enable Care Services (South Wales) Ltd. The acquisition was funded by a £3.25 million investment from NatWest. "We seek to not only support individuals but empower them to be the best versions of themselves. "The fact that so many people in Wales are living with disabilities and severe mental illness underscores the critical need for tailored support which helps them gain or rebuild their independence. "Residents of South Wales deserve the highest quality of care, and we are thrilled to announce the acquisition of Enable Care Services as we continue to grow and expand our network. "NatWest has been exceptional throughout the process, demonstrating a deep understanding of our industry and our goals and we are incredibly grateful for their support." The deal includes two care homes in Cwmbran and one in Argoed. Expanding Horizons provides personalised support for people with learning disabilities and severe mental illnesses. The company marks its 20th anniversary this year. Part of the funding will go towards the acquisition, while the remainder will support refinancing and infrastructure improvements to ensure regulatory compliance. The expansion is aimed at meeting the rising demand for residential and supported living services across South Wales. According to Public Health Network Cymru, around 900,000 people in Wales live with a disability. This represents 27 per cent of the population, compared to the UK average of 22 per cent. Neil Williams, senior relationship manager at NatWest, said: "The work that Expanding Horizons does is absolutely invaluable to its service users and is the exact sort of community benefit that we look to support at NatWest. "We look forward to continuing our partnership and are excited to witness Expanding Horizon's continued growth and evolution." Expanding Horizons said the acquisition will improve its ability to deliver high-quality care across the region. The company currently operates a portfolio of care homes and supported living services in South Wales.
