Andhra Pradesh government to develop greenfield semi ring road between Rambilli & Bhogapuram near Vizag

Visakhapatnam: Aimed at enhancing connectivity across Anakapalli, Visakhapatnam, and Vizianagaram districts, the Andhra Pradesh govt has decided to undertake an access-controlled, greenfield semi ring road project from Rambilli (where a naval alternate operating base is under development) in Anakapalli district to Bhogapuram in Vizianagaram district.The

(VMRDA) has been entrusted with the task of appointing consultancy services to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for this road initiative.
Accordingly, the VMRDA has issued a request for proposal to select a technical consultant for DPR preparation.The proposed route is expected to run west of the existing national highway, starting from Rambilli and passing through Kothavalasa and other regions in Vizianagaram district, ultimately culminating in Bhogapuram, where an international airport is currently under development.
With a six-lane highway already operational between Anakapalli and Anandapuram, this new road is intended to complement existing infrastructure and improve regional transportation efficiency.A ring road project has long been a demand of several people's representatives of the erstwhile combined Visakhapatnam district, given the growing traffic needs. Even though the project does not directly connect to Vizag city, it will provide an alternative route for people living along the stretch from Rambilli to Bhogapuram, alleviating congestion. This will also spur economic development in the region, particularly on the Bhogapuram side of the proposed alignment of the road.Speaking to TOI, VMRDA chairperson Pranav Gopal said that the selected consultant will prepare a DPR outlining key aspects of the project, including estimated costs, financial viability, land requirements, alignment options, route length, and the areas to be covered. "The report will be submitted to the state govt, which will take the final call on the project. The approximate length of the road to be studied is 90 kilometres," he said,"A greenfield alignment may be pursued only if traffic projections indicate a need for future expansion beyond four lanes. If the greenfield option is chosen, the entire right of way will be acquired to accommodate up to an eight-lane main carriageway, including provisions for service roads. Initially, a four-lane carriageway with four-lane structures will be developed, with space reserved in the median for future expansion. Inhabited areas will include service roads with a minimum width of 10 meters, while ensuring maximum access control for the main highway. Access to towns, cities, and establishments along the existing national highway will be provided via spurs from the greenfield route," Pranav Gopal said."First, a feasibility study must be completed. Only after specific instructions from VMRDA, based on the outcome of the study, will the consultancy move forward with DPR preparation," added the VMRDA chairperson.To fund the semi ring road project, a value capture finance (VCF) strategy is likely to be adopted. The VCF model is expected to reduce reliance on traditional government funding and loans, while encourage private sector participation and development along the corridor. This may ultimately support long-term sustainability through a self-financing infrastructure model.

With the rise of freelance and gig-based income, many individuals are unsure how to report such earnings correctly. The ITR filing for FY 2024-25 (AY 2025-26) has been partially thrown open on the Income Tax Portal Individuals who have to file their tax returns using ITR-1 or ITR-4 forms can now do so. So which ITR form should gig workers and free lancers use to file their ITR for FY 2024-25? ITR e-filing FY 2024-25: Which Form For Gig Workers? As non-traditional work arrangements grow, understanding the appropriate tax filing requirements is essential for freelancers and gig workers to remain compliant and minimize potential issues. According to Amarpal Chadha, Tax Partner, EY India, income from independent work—such as writing, design, consulting, tuition, or platform-based gigs like ride-sharing and food delivery—is treated as 'Profits and Gains from Business or Profession' under Indian tax law. Importantly, ITR-1 and ITR-2 do not apply to income from freelancing or gig work. Selecting the correct form is crucial for smooth return processing and to avoid errors or compliance notices. Freelancers maintaining books of accounts and claiming actual business expenses should file ITR-3 . Alternatively, those in specified professions—such as legal, accounting, or technical consultancy etc—with gross receipts up to Rs 50 lakh (or Rs 75 lakh if cash receipts do not exceed 5% of the total gross receipts) may opt for ITR-4 under the presumptive taxation scheme. Under the presumptive taxation scheme, 50% of gross receipts are deemed taxable, simplifying compliance by eliminating the need for detailed bookkeeping. Representative Image BENGALURU: As demand for South Indian cuisine surges and hotels face a cook shortage, many are seeking new ways to integrate advanced technology into their kitchens. While automation in the hotel industry is not a new concept, it is now entering a new phase, with a focus on further automating tasks traditionally done by human hands. "Particularly South Indian cooks are hard to find," says PC Rao, Honorary President, Bangalore Hotels Association (BHA). "We have machines for vada-making, pongal preparation, and more, but there's still a need for someone to measure the ingredients and feed them into the machines. It is not 100% mechanised yet." He was talking to TOI on the sidelines of the launch of Media Day Marketing trade expo where equipment industries will meet the hospitality sector. Echoing his sentiments, President of Bangalore Hotels Association, Subrahmanya Holla said, "It's interesting how things will unfold, and we're also waiting to see." Holla, whose own hotel still favours a hands-on approach, acknowledges that machines can be a good solution for bulk production, such as in catering. "Vada making makes sense in high-volume business. Pongal machines are already in use. But you can't fully mechanise everything. Some things still require ahuman touch, like pouring ghee and sugar, in a Mysore Pak production line," Holla shares. K Rama Murthy, owner of Konark Hotel on Residency Road, who was in the industry for over 40 years, addresses the challenges in complete automation of South Indian food. "South Indian food is passed down generationally. It is not something we can easily put in a syllabus for students. Hence, while the automation of beverage preparation, like cocktail mixing, is already common, the same is harder to achieve with food. For Indian food, especially South Indian items, it is made to order." He finds the fresh food production segment at a crossroads. New manpower laws have made hiring and retaining fresh-food staff more challenging, shrinking the pool of cooks willing to learn complex, made-to-order South Indian recipes. Advanced solutions like freeze-drying plants or vacuum-packed ready-cook systems are emerging to retain higher nutrition levels, but are expensive, he added. At his hotel, he uses automation. Murthy elaborates on the same: Three-star hotels in the city have adopted this technology—a combi-oven, which can cook with steam and dry heat—giving you rice, steam veg, pulao, any rice item—bisibele bath and pongal. You can roast masalas in the machine in a systematic way. There are limitations—shallow frying and traditional methods, like masala dosa preparation, or making sambar. For Uddina vadas, there is a separate machine—the dough gets dropped like doughnuts. "We also have an in-house South Indian filter dispensing machine, and are looking for idli dropping and cooking systems," he said, being the go-to person on automation in the sector. Hospitality students are also training on the growing role of AI in the sector, including streamlining kitchen operations. Sanchari Chowdhury, Director at IIHM Bangalore, said, "Although human touch is still very much needed in hospitality, AI helps in menu planning, stock taking, and ingredient percentages, making the process faster. Even experiences are curated using tech—a Japanese restaurant in the city has automated the process of learning its guest's food and seating preference. " "We are in a city that has accepted automation well," she adds. "Key cards in hotels are replaced by mobile check-ins. Roles in hospitality are changing—but the warm body is very needed in hospitality even today."

Government may slow down declaring more state highways as national highways

In a major policy change, the Centre is preparing a model to provide financial assistance to state govts for one-time improvement of state highways rather than declaring more of these as NHs . The road transport ministry will instead focus on building more new greenfield highways and expressways. This comes after PM Narendra Modi's direction to the ministry to come up with a model by July end for the purpose. State govts will maintain the upgraded state highways. TOI has learnt that in the last infrastructure review meeting, Modi had asked the ministry to come up with innovative models for supporting state highway projects and connecting non-major ports under state govts. This change in approach gains importance considering that in the last 11 years, govt has notified conversion of 55,000 km of state highways to NHs and now, the total length of NHs stands at 1.46 lakh km. This has been highlighted as one of the biggest achievements of govt. Sources said that after expanding the NH network, now there is a need to focus more on widening them and maintaining them. Data shows that till March, India has more than 63 lakh km of road network.
