The state cabinet on Tuesday approved a proposal by the tourism department to issue a letter of award to a Patna-based private developer for the construction of a five-star hotel near the Income-Tax roundabout, replacing the existing Hotel Patliputra Ashok . The project will be executed under the public-private partnership (PPP) mode.With this decision, the path has also been cleared for the development of two more five-star hotels in Patna, giving a major boost to luxury hospitality infrastructure in the state capital.The cabinet had earlier sanctioned the construction of five-star hotels at three sites – the location of Hotel Patliputra Ashok, the remodelling of the historic Sultan Palace (also known as Transport Bhavan) without altering its architecture and heritage value and the site of the Bankipore bus stand near Gandhi Maidan.Cabinet secretariat department additional chief secretary S Siddharth said the bidding process for the other two five-star hotel projects has also been initiated."The letter of award has been issued to the Patna-based agency concerned for the construction of a five-star hotel at the Hotel Patliputra Ashok site after the successful completion of the bidding process. Its construction cost was the lowest," Siddharth said, adding that the project will follow the PPP model.He added that the lease agreement for the project has already been signed with the developer. "In the first phase, it is for 60 years, and then it will be extended by another 30 years. Overall, the lease agreement is for a 90-year period," Siddharth said.The private developer awarded the project is Kumar Infra Trade Enterprises Pvt Ltd , Patna. The letter of award was issued by the Bihar State Infrastructure Development Authority In another key decision, the cabinet sanctioned the transfer of 0.1555 acres of land belonging to the Chandragupta Institute of Management-Patna to the urban development and housing department for the construction of a Patna Metro Rail station.The land, located in the Vigrahpur 'mauja' under the Phulwarisharif circle, was transferred for a payment of Rs 10 crore, Siddharth said.

Chandigarh: Despite being flagged by the Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) and receiving a perfect score in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 for "facilities for physically challenged students", Panjab University (PU) still lacks a basic access ramp at the fee counter inside the on-campus SBI branch — a facility nearly every student visits while studying at the campus. Over seven months after the PSHRC issued a notice to PU, the university claims that the responsibility of building the ramp lies with the bank. A university official said the layout plan was prepared by the PU architect office and cost estimates were submitted to SBI representatives in Jan. "We are now awaiting action from the bank," the official said. In its reply to the commission dated Nov 11, 2024, PU had stated that it was working with SBI on finalising a revised ramp layout, after which construction would begin. The university also listed a campus-wide accessibility audit, a Rs 755 crore compliance estimate under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, and a funding proposal under the Centre's SIPDA scheme. But even after these claims, there is no physical progress on the ground. The commission then directed PU to file a signed reply at least a week before the next hearing — May 29, 2025. With no response received, the matter has now been adjourned to Sept 23. Registrar Prof Y P Verma said the earlier reply was prepared by the equal opportunity cell for PwDs which was sent to the commission. "It generally has a cover letter mentioning the office from which it is issued. But if the commission is specifically seeking a signed reply, we will submit it again," he said.

Old Goa-Gaundalim road to be closed from Monday for overbridge construction
Panaji: The road from Old Goa to Gandaulim will be closed for traffic from June 23 onwards as Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) plans to hasten the construction of the road overbridge. The public can take the Banastarim route or the Corlim industrial estate route to head to Marcel, Amona, Sanquelim, and beyond. 'We hope to complete the work by Dec but it could take another month or so if the monsoons carry on for longer,' said Cumbarjua MLA Rajesh Faldessai. 'The work will progress faster if the road is closed.' The stretch experiences traffic snarls every day because of the railway crossing. Peak congestion occurs in the morning when parents ferry their children to school and residents commute to the office. GSIDC initially announced the road closure for the flyover in Feb but did not enforce it as many commuters complained of inconvenience. The construction work is likely to go on for eight to nine months but could take longer, said GSIDC officials. According to a GSIDC official, around 17 pillars have already been erected. The road overbridge is likely to cost Rs 40 crore to build. Land acquisition for the road overbridge was completed last year, however, the construction was delayed due to the Exposition of the relics of St Francis Xavier.

Residents' body asks Haryana govt to roll back hiked power tariff
Panchkula: Haryana govt's recent decision to hike electricity rates up to four times has sparked public outrage, especially in Kalka and Panchkula. After residents welfare associations (RWAs), Shivalik Vikas Manch has strongly opposed the move, demanding a complete rollback of the revised rates and a waiver of residential electricity bills for economically weaker sections. In a memorandum sent to CM Nayab Singh Saini and the power minister, Manch president Vijay Bansal criticised the govt's decision, citing severe impact on residents already grappling with job losses due to the closure of major industries like HMT Tractors and ACC Cement in Pinjore. He pointed out that unemployment in the area had surged, leaving people in no position to bear additional financial burdens such as inflated power bills. "Households which previously received a monthly bill of Rs 1,000, are now getting bills exceeding Rs 4,000," Bansal said. The senior Congress leader said electricity tariffs in BJP-ruled Haryana, which were already the highest in the region, had pushed industries to neighbouring states like Himachal and Uttarakhand.
