Brown University in GOP crosshairs after student's DOGE-like email kicks off frenzy
FIRST ON FOX: A brewing controversy over a "DOGE-like" email at one of America's top universities has gotten the attention of Capitol Hill.
Rep. Troy Nehls, R-Texas, wrote to Brown University on Friday morning urging the school to reconsider any disciplinary action against Alex Shieh, a sophomore who sent an email mirroring the style of Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) that asked non-faculty university workers what they did "all day."
"Reports indicate that Mr. Shieh engaged in a journalistic act of contacting university administrative employees to inquire about their roles and responsibilities. This action, it appears, stemmed from his perspective as a student paying a substantial tuition fee and experiencing concerns regarding university facilities, leading him to question the allocation of administrative resources," Nehls wrote.
"Penalizing a student for what appears to be an attempt to understand the university's administrative structure raises serious questions about the institution's commitment to open inquiry and the tolerance of dissenting viewpoints."

He also demanded more information on how Brown uses its $7.2 billion endowment to lower tuition and better the lives of students.

It comes at a time when American Ivy Leagues have been thrust under the microscope by the Trump administration, both for their soaring tuition rates and controversies surrounding antisemitism on campus.
Shieh had created a database of the 3,805 non-faculty employees who worked at Brown University and emailed them to ask, "What do you do all day?"
He wrote on X that he had been given a disciplinary hearing after being "charged with misrepresentation and violating the IT policy."
Tuition alone at Brown University for the 2025-2026 academic year is $71,700. Fees, food, and housing charges bring that up to about $93,000 per year, according to the school's website — and with indirect charges, annual costs are estimated at nearly $96,000.
"I urge you to reconsider any disciplinary action taken against Mr. Shieh and to reaffirm Brown University's commitment to protecting the free expression of all its students," Nehls wrote.
"Additionally, below you can see screenshots from Brown's website showing the performance of its $7.2 billion endowment, boasting a 10% annual return. Please explain how these funds are used to improve the student experience or bring down the cost of tuition."
Nehls previously introduced a bill that would significantly hike excise taxes on most larger colleges' endowment funds from 1.4% to 21%, in line with the corporate tax rate.
A Brown University official declined to comment on Nehls' letter directly when reached by Fox News Digital, but denied free speech was the larger issue.

"In spite of what has been reported publicly framing this as a free speech issue, it absolutely is not," Brian Clark, vice president for news and strategic campus communications, said in an email statement to Fox News Digital.
"At the center of Brown's review are questions focused on whether improper use of non-public Brown data, non-public data systems and/or targeting of individual employees violated law or policy."
"Brown has detailed procedures in place to investigate alleged conduct code violations, resolve them and implement discipline in instances when students are found responsible, and these will continue to guide our actions," Clark added. "Students have ample opportunity to provide information and participate directly in that process to ensure that all decisions are made with a complete understanding of the circumstances."

DOGE terminates $9 million state digital equity grant
dbeard@ MORGANTOWN – A $9 million federal grant to the state Economic Development Department recently got DOGE'd. But the department and Gov. Patrick Morrisey both failed to answer questions about it. The $9,011,588 grant came from the U.S Department of Commerce National Telecommunications and Information Administration to support the state's digital equity program. DOGE gives the termination date as May 9 and notes a total savings of $8,791,067.90. The $2.75 billion Digital Equity Act, passed in 2021 as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, was intended to expand internet access for certain disadvantaged populations, according to the Associated Press. 'It gave states and tribes flexibility to deliver high-speed internet access to families that could not afford it, computers to kids who did not have them, telehealth access to older adults in rural areas, and training and job skills to veterans.' But President Trump announced in late May his intention to end it, AP reported. USASpending shows that the grant began Dec. 1, 2024 and was slated to run through Nov. 30, 2029. Its stated purpose was to implement West Virginia's digital equity plan. Among its missions: launching digital skills and local digital equity planning programs; a piloting program to supply laptops; and collecting data on such things as number of covered populations served, total number served, and personal testimony of participants. The grant description said, 'The proposed projects will result in narrowing the digital divide, improved access to digital resources, and increased accessibility and impact initiatives for community development.' Morrisey and the Economic Development Department failed to respond to three inquiries sent to each on two separate days. In early January, echoing Trump, Morrisey issued an executive order eliminating DEI – Diversity, Equity and Inclusion – from state government. DEI opponents generally view it as a form of reverse racism. Among the questions we asked Morrisey and the department were if the grant termination was tied to DEI opposition, what the impact of the grant termination might be, and if the state would continue the digital equity program via some other means. The general consensus is that West Virginia's broadband access challenges are tied to terrain and the state's rural nature, and we asked Morrisey and the department how those issues factor into the aims of the digital equity plan – getting no answer, of course. We also asked about the difference between the full grant amount and the listed savings – $220,520.10 – and if some of the money has been spent, what on, and if they have to return it. As it happens, on Thursday, Morrisey announced funding for broadband infrastructure deployment projects in 10 counties to facilitate the expansion of fiber-to-the-home broadband infrastructure. Morrisey said that with the installation of approximately 362 miles of fiber infrastructure, 2,897 locations will gain access to high-speed broadband. The counties are Preston, Calhoun, Doddridge, Gilmer, Grant, Jackson, Lewis, Mason, Pendleton and Putnam.

An India-based criminal organization is drawing increasing political scrutiny in Canada, with some saying it needs to be declared a terrorist organization. This week, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown called on Ottawa to declare the Lawrence Bishnoi gang a terrorist organization, joining a chorus of other voices. 'We must take transnational crime seriously and that means giving law enforcement the investigative tools to combat these sophisticated criminal networks,' Brown said on X. Brown was joined by deputy mayor Harkirat Singh and regional councillors Gurpartap Singh Toor and Navjit Kaur Brar in the request to have the Lawrence Bishnoi gang declared a criminal organization by Ottawa. 'The Bishnoi gang, a transnational criminal network, led from India, has been linked to a growing wave of violence, extortion and intimidation targeting South Asian communities in Brampton and across the Region of Peel,' Brown said in a prepared statement. The statement did not give examples of specific violent incidents. The Lawrence Bishnoi group was also named in the murder of Brampton-based rapper Sidhu Moose Wala, when Wala was in India in 2022. Bishnoi, who is in his early 30s, is the son of a police officer and was educated in a convent school. Now in custody in India on more than two dozen charges, including murder and extortion, he awaits trial. He has been accused of using intimidation tactics to extort business owners in Punjabi diaspora communities in North America, Europe and the Gulf states. The gang is reportedly run by Bishnoi through encrypted cell messages, even though he is behind bars in India. Brown's comments follow similar ones earlier this week, when B.C. Premier David Eby urged the federal government to label the gang a terrorist organization because of extortion and other crimes against the South Asian community on the West Coast. Eby said Tuesday that he was going to write to Prime Minister Mark Carney, asking that the Lawrence Bishnoi group be labelled a terrorist group 'to enable police to be able to use the necessary tools to investigate.' Last fall, the RCMP stated the gang was targeting members of the pro-Khalistan movement who were on Canadian soil, allegedly acting for the Indian government. On the West Coast, the Lawrence Bishnoi group was accused this week of firing bullets into the home of a Punjabi music producer. Last year, shots were reportedly fired at the home of Punjabi music star A.P. Dhillon on Vancouver Island and in 2023, shots were fired outside the West Vancouver home of Bollywood singer and actor Gippy Grewal. Indian media said the Lawrence Bishnoi group claimed responsibility for both attacks. Moves to label the Lawrence Bishnoi gang a terrorist group throw complications into Carney's attempts to rebuild the Canada-India relationship. Eby's announcement on Tuesday was praised by the World Sikh Organization of Canada. 'Canadian law enforcement and intelligence agencies have linked the Bishnoi gang to assassinations, extortions, and intimidation carried out at the direction of Indian government agents including the 2023 murder of Canadian Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar and other violent crimes,' the organization said.
